Electrodynamics - Part 3

1. Consider two concentric spherical shell of radius a and b, where a < b. The charge
on spherical shells are increasing with time so that inner and outer shell carries
charge −Q(t) and Q(t) respectively at time t. Thus the system is always electrically
neutral. The space between the shells is filled with a material of conductivity σ.
(a) Find the magnitude and direction of current at time t.
(b) Find the magnitude and direction of magnetic field.
(c) Is your answer to problem (1b) consistent with the symmetries of the system.
(d) Calculate displacement current in the system.
(e) Re-calculate magnetic field taking into account effect of displacement current.
Is your answer consistent with the symmetries of the system.
2. A parallel plate capacitor is made by cutting a fat wire of circular cross section of
radius R into two pieces, and separating them by a small distance d as shown in
figure below.

The current in both the segments of wire over its cross section is I(t).
(a) Evaluate the magnetic field in the gap.
(b) Using Ampere’s law, find the loop integral of magnetic field over the loop
shown in figure below. The surface enclosed by the loop is shown by colored
region.

(c) Repeat above problem for the same loop. But the surface enclosed by the loop
is a balloon shape as shown by colored region in the figure below.
