LEADING EDGE DEVICES FAIL TO RETRACT

If the leading edge devices fail to retract symmetrically, after takeoff or go-
around, proceed as follows:
LED ANNUNCIATOR SWITCH . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . POSITION TEST
Attempt to visually inspect the LED's:
If visually inspected to be retracted - continue flight at normal speed.
If unable to visually confirm retraction, but flight characteristic indicate that
all LE Devices are retracted, continue normally.
If visually inspected to be extended or flight characteristics
indicate that some LE devices are extended:
Extend Flaps to last position where LED green light came "ON" (Flaps 2 or
5).
Maintain airspeed limitation for Flaps extended.
Note: If the Leading Edge Devices are confirmed to be extended, the
Captain will determine the need to land at nearest suitable airport.
If further flap retraction is required, proceed with the following
procedure:
Perform the following for enroute operations:
ALTERNATE FLAPS MASTER SWITCH. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ON
CIRCUIT BREAKER LEADING EDGE VALVE (P6-4) . . . . . . . . . . . PULL

ONE LEADING EDGE DEVICE FAILED TO EXTEND

The Flight Engineer will verify only one LED is not extended by positioning
LED annunciator switch to view the LED status. He will confirm LED
position status. Refer to Chapter 6, AOM VOL 1 - Flight Standards and
Training Maneuvers for additional information on profiles.
Use flaps 30° for landing.
VREF 30 + 15 knots.
If Hydraulic System 'A' is inoperative, use flaps 15 and VREF 30 + 30 knots.
15 knots for the hydraulic system inoperative, plus 15 knots for the
inoperative LED.
Complete Normal “DESCENT AND APPROACH” and “BEFORE

TWO OR MORE LEADING EDGE DEVICE FAILED TO

EXTEND
The Flight Engineer will verify that two or more LED are not extended by
positioning the LED annunciator test switch. He will confirm LED position
status. Refer to Chapter 6, AOM VOL 1 - Flight Standards and Training
Maneuvers for profile information.
Maximum crosswind for landing is 19 knots.
Add 20 knots to normal flap maneuvering speeds schedule. (5°, 15°, do
not maneuver at 25 °)
Use Flaps 30 for landing and VREF 30 + 30 knots.
At this airspeed the aircraft will tend to roll away from the failed (i.e., not
extended) leading edge devices. It is recommended that rudder be used to
reduce the amount of aileron trim required, especially under gusty weather
conditions.
If no other abnormal condition exists, use the normal “DESCNET AND
APPROACH” and “BEFORE LANDING” CHECKLISTS.
Missed Approach Procedure:
Retract flaps to 5°.
Note: Maintain flaps 5°. Observe 5° flap maximum placarded speed.

FLAP ASYMMETRY/SPLIT FLAP LANDING

When the L and R needles on one flap position indicator disagree by one
or more needle width and the affected flap position indicator needles do
not agree with the selected flap position, a flap asymmetry condition exists.
When the L and R needles on one flap position indicator agree with each
other, but do not agree with the selected flap position, a split flap condition
exists.

DITCHING/EVACUATION
DITCHING CHECKLIST
Conditions such as multiple engine failure, fuel depletion, or onboard fire
while over-water may require a water landing to be accomplished. Use the
following information for guidance in the event a water landing is
necessary.
On the Captain's command, the First Officer will transit a “MAYDAY”
message. He/she will transmit “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” and state the
aircraft situation and intention. Additional information in the transmission
include the, aircraft position, course, speed, altitude; the estimated time
and position of intended touchdown and a request for an ASR intercept.
The transponder should be set to 7700.
Alert crew and ACM's to prepare for ditching. Confirm the location of the
raft. Don life vests, but do not inflate until after you have exited from the
aircraft. Review primary and secondary escape routes. The primary
escape exit for egress will be the L-1 door. Secondary escape exit will be
out of the First Officer's sliding window. The Captain's sliding window can
be used if the primary and secondary exits are not available.
Review ditching touchdown procedures. Maintain airspeed at VAP.
Maintain 200-300 FPM rate of descent to touchdown. Plan to touch down
on windward side, parallel to waves or swells, if possible. Flare aircraft
smoothly to a touchdown attitude of 10°-12°, maintaining desired airspeed
and rate of descent with power. At touchdown, reduce throttles to idle.
Review the after impact procedures. The aircraft will most likely
experience several skips after the initial impact. Confirm that the aircraft
has come to a complete stop before beginning the evacuation procedures.
After the aircraft has come to a complete rest, launch the raft(s) and
evacuate the aircraft as soon as possible. The aircraft may remain afloat
indefinitely if the fuel load is minimal and no serious damage was
sustained during landing. Do not open the aft air-stair door in any event as
it will be below the water line.
Dump fuel as required. Prior to dumping fuel, determine the quantity of fuel
that will be required to reach the desired ditching position. Do not attempt
to ditch with zero fuel. Use all operating engines for touchdown.
