Ch. 1: Resistance
What is resistor?

• Resistor is an electronic component used to resist (limit) the

flow of electric current in the circuit.

• Resistor in the circuit

6
Reading the Resistor Value
• Resistor value is measured in ohm(Ω), and measured
by Ohmmeter.

• Recently, AVO meter, is a single device, used to

combine the functions of the three devices:
• Ammeter (measures the current),
• Voltmeter (measures the voltage)
• Ohmmeter (measures the resistance).

7
Reading the Resistor Value

• Carbon resistors have two common standards:

Four bands Five bands

13
Reading the Resistor Value
Example: Draw the four bands color code for a 1 kΩ resistor, with tolerance
±5%.
Solution:
Value = 1 kΩ = 1000 Ω , tolerance = ±5%.
For the four bands color code, the value is on the form: A B × C ± D
Then, A=1 B=0 C=102 D=±5%
From the base table, A is equivalent to Brown
B is equivalent to Black
From the multiplication table, C is equivalent to Red
From the tolerance table, D is equivalent to Gold
