0 Foreword
SMC – 450 slipform paver is a novel kerb slipforming machine which integrates the functions
and features of several similar products abroad. It is developed and produced by 江苏四明工程机械
有限公司. The automatic control system of the machine is composed of longitudinal slope system
control, horizontal slope control, and steering automatic control. The paver which can be operated
easily, is a hydromechatronic high-tech product with visualized structure.
SMC-450 slipform paver could be used to pave kerbs of various shapes to meet the
requirements of the projects by changing the template behind the hopper.
After purchasing SMC-450 slipform paver, please read the operation manual first. You can only
implement the construction smoothly and safely after you are familiar with the operation skills and
the do’s and the don’ts. Moreover, the specific environment and site may influence the paving effect
to some extent.
1. The roadbed must be flat (it is recommended to use existing tools to flatten the roadbed).
2. The concrete slump should be within 0 ~ 1.0 cm.
3. The leading line and grade line must be placed correctly.
4. The using skills of the machine must be fully mastered.
I. Safety Instruction
1. All protective covers on the machine should be placed properly to ensure the safety of the
operators and other staff.
2. Remind all staff to wear protective clothes related.
3. Please remember that the body parts and loose clothes should be kept away from the moving
parts of the machine.
4 The user shall not alter the device without the permission of product supplier. Otherwise, the
user will lose the right to free maintenance during the warranty period. The genuine parts provided
by 江苏四明工程机械有限公司 should be used for maintenance and replacement by authorized
dealers and professionals with special training of 江苏四明工程机械有限公司.
5. The engine should be stopped before the adjustment of the parts, maintenance or refueling.
6. The engine must be cooled first and then refueled at well-ventilated places for the gas is
flammable and poisonous.
II. Warranty Conditions
1. 江 苏 四 明 工 程 机 械 有 限 公 司 guarantees that the mechanical failures resulting from the
quality of materials and parts will be repaired freely within the warranty period as long as the
machine is operated and maintained properly.
2. The parts or machine within the warranty scope can be replaced or repaired freely.
3. If the machine is altered and adjusted without the written consent of our company, the
warranty will be invalidated forever. Our company will not be responsible for any failures
resulting from improper operation of the machine, careless operation, accidents or natural
disasters. If the machine is not repaired by our company or authorized dealers, the warranty
regulations will not be applied.
4. Transportation costs and other costs associated with transportation are not covered by
warranty.
5. Our company reserves the right to investigate and make the final decision on every case

IV. Preparation before Operation


Please read the following instructions and regular maintenance sections.
Attention! Before starting the engine, the staff around should keep hands, feet and clothes away
from the rotating parts. Check if all switches are in the idle position or turned off.
Attention! Gasoline is dangerous! When using or storing it, you should be very careful because
it is very volatile and explosive in gaseous state. Please don’t refuel the engine when it is operating
or weld the oil tank with gasoline in it.
1. Oil level of engine oil: Check the oil level of engine oil.
2. Air Filter: Check the air filter to ensure that it is clean and intact.
3. Fuel filter: Clean the sediment cup.
4. Battery: Please keep the electrolyte level correct. The battery energy weakens with the
decrease of temperature. Please monitor the working charging system to ensure the battery

power is sufficient. Please remove the battery from the machine and keep and maintain it
separately in winter.
5. Fuel: Please use gasoline 93# or above.
6. Hydraulic oil: Check hydraulic oil level. Oil level should be at 2 / 3 point of the indicator
window of the liquidometer. If replenishment is needed, please fill unified hydraulic oil 46#.

1. Hour meter: Display the total running time of the machine.


2. System pressure indicator: Display whether the hydraulic system functions right. The hydraulic
system is working when the indicator is on.
3. System pressure control switch: Control and turn off the hydraulic system electrically. The system
is working when the indicator is on.
4. Key start switch: OFF - Turn off the power ON - Turn on the power START - Start the switch

When turn on the power, the indicators should all be off before starting the machine.

5. Steering control (Steering): LED1 will be on when pressing , which indicates

automatic mode, and the steering valve will be controlled by the sensor automatically; LED1 will

be off when pressing , which indicates manual mode, and you could turn left or right

by controlling and .

6. Longitudinal control (Grade): LED2 will be on when pressing , which indicates

automatic mode, and the longitudinal valve will be controlled by the sensor automatically; LED2

will be off when pressing , which indicates manual mode, and you could control the

ascending and descending by

8. Horizontal slope setting potentiometer: Set the gradient of the horizontal slope. First manually

regulate the slipform slope, then turn off the hydraulic pressure control switch and turn on automatic

horizontal slope. Make the gradient sensor return to zero by horizontal slope setting potentiometer

(Gradient indicator lights are all off).

Attention: Only manual or automatic mode will be described in the following description and

the operation methods will not be elaborated again.

5.1.3 Operation Instructions


1. Turn on the power, pull the key switch from “OFF” to “ON” and check whether all indicators
on panel are off. If any indicator is on, press the corresponding buttons to stop it.
2. Pull the key start switch to START and hold it until the engine start switch starts. If it fails to
start, please open the air door (as the arrow indicated direction) and return the air door immediately
after starting the engine, adjust the engine accelerator to proper power output, and the machine is in
ready state at this time.

3. Press key on STEERING panel to make the steering control in automatic


mode. Adjust the location of integrated sensor and make the direction pole and sliding bow of

longitudinal slope locate on the steel wire. Turn off LED1 and LED2 by adjusting
height and direction of the sensor. At this moment, the steering longitudinal slope sensor is on the
equilibrium point, which shows that the machine would move along the preset direction of the steel
wire rope under the control of the sensor during construction.
4. Press START switch to pressure the machine, and the green indicator will be on.
5. The machine can do reverse-push construction immediately after the materials are filled into
the hopper.

Installation and regulation of sensor will be

Warning! Don't immediately stop the engine when the machine running at high speed. Stop the
engine after it has been running for 3 minutes at low speed to avoid the heat aggregation. After
stopping the engine, if the key is on "START" position, the battery will be discharged.

5.1.4 Stop the Engine

has been running for 3 minutes at low speed to avoid the heat aggregation. Otherwise it would reduce
the life of machine.

VI. Construction Procedures


I). Field preparation before construction
(1) The roadbed to be paved must be flattened into 120 cm in width, which means extending 15
cm along the machine moving direction. The roadbed must have good flatness and compactness.
(2) Purchase standard piles, supports and baselines. The baselines should be installed on the left
side (road shoulder) from the kerb 15-30 cm. Make the baselines be connected tightly to ensure that
the leveling and steering of the paver are accurate during construction.
(3) Place the paver in appropriate position (i.e. the machine mold should coincide with the kerb
to be paved), and keep the machine frame parallel to the steel wire.
II) Installation and Debugging of Operation Stand and Sensor
(1) Firstly ensure that the battery “OFF” and the key switch of the operation stand are in “OFF”
status.
(2) Fix the operation stand on the support; connect it to control panel of the paver with a 17-core
wire.
(3) Turn on the battery, start the engine and adjust the accelerator to appropriate output power,
start the pressure switch, adjust the front wheels of the machine manually to make them parallel to
the steel wire, and then manually adjust the front steering mechanism to make the angle between the
frame and the ground be 10°~ 30° (for reference only, adjusting the inclination according to the road
state and the machine). At the moment, adjust manually the transverse slope cylinder to make
horizontal slope wheel contact the ground. The wheel needs not be pressured under the condition of
flattening roadbed, and then turn off the pressure switch, pull the key switch of engine in “OFF” to
stop the battery.
(4) Fix the integrated sensor on the support of instrument to make the socket of sensor face the
side of the machine. The installing direction and method of sensor are shown as following:

(5) Mount the direction pole of sensor, as shown in above picture: Make the direction pole
situate inside of the steel wire, loosen the fastening screw on transverse pole and adjust the balance
weight to make direction pole contact tightly with sliding bow and steel wire.
(6) Turn on the battery, turn the key switch to “ON”, and ensure that there are no indicator lit.
Then turn on steering mechanism to automatic mode, adjust the transverse pole of sensor to make the
LED5 and LED6 OFF. At this moment, the steering sensor is on the equilibrium point, which shows
that the machine would move along the preset direction of the steel wire under the control of the
sensor during construction.
(7) Tighten the fastening screw on the transverse pole, fix the sensor sliding bow (as shown in
above picture) to make the transverse pole of sliding bow situate on the steel wire. Then set
longitudinal slope mechanism to automatic mode, adjust the vertical pole of sensor to make the
LED6 and LED6 OFF. At this moment, the longitudinal slope sensor is on the equilibrium point,
which shows that the machine would move along the preset height of the steel wire under the control
of the sensor during construction.
(8) The machine can operate automatically in transverse slope mode only with transverse slope
sensor. The transverse slope is an auxiliary mechanism which can not operate in automatic mode
during construction.
Ⅲ)Paving
(1) Apply the mold-releasing oil inside and outside the hopper and the mold. Fill concrete to be
paved into the hopper, and when the concrete is increased to appropriate capacity, the slipforming
machine starts to go ahead automatically.
(2) Usually, if the roadbed is properly flattened, the machine can automatically pave without
needing to adjust the paving height of machine, thus, the sensors of longitudinal and transverse slope
can both be turned off.
Ⅳ)Adjusting after paving
(1) When the machine moves to the end of the guide rope, change the forward and transverse
direction switch to manual mode. After the concrete in the hopper dropping completely, lift up the

machine manually and transfer it to appropriate site. Stop the engine under idle state.
(2) Clear up the residual concrete in the hopper, and clean the inside and outside of the template.
Otherwise the residual concrete will affect the next construction.
(3) Dismantle the controller and supports and keep them well during transportation and storage
for a long time.
VII. Construction Reference
1. Always maintain the concrete quantity in the hopper; otherwise the form of kerb would
deform.
2. If the surface quality of the kerb is poor, please check whether the concrete matching is
correct, or check whether the last mold is clean after paving.
3. If the quality of concrete is not accord with the standard, please check the following items:
(i) whether the concrete mixed correctly; (ii) whether the slump and water content of concrete
proper; (iii) whether the template declination to the ground appropriate; (iv) whether the exhaust slot
at the back of template clean.
4. When paving on the big bend radius kerb, adjust the horizontal direction of the controller
supports to avoid the machine clash the baseline, and adjust the direction of the controller again after
getting through the bend.
5. The location of the baseline will decide the direction of the kerb, so always keep the baseline
parallel to the position of kerb to be paved. The baseline tensioning degree and setting height decide
the height and flatness of the kerb. Therefore the benchmark piles should have proper intervals
(usually 5m space) and be tensioned when mounting the baseline. The variation of the baseline on
vertical and horizontal direction should not more than 2.5 cm to make the paving perfect.
6. In automatic paving mode, if the adjustment of machine cylinder is too frequent or too much,
please check the following items:
(i) whether the controller is too sensitive; (ii) whether the controller is in trouble; (iii) whether the
hydraulic system is in trouble; (iv) whether the flatness of roadbed conforms to requirements; (v)
Whether there are foreign matters on the roadbed.

VIII. Machine maintenance
Before maintenance every time, first close the engine, pull start key out, and conduct
maintenance after cooling of the engine.
I). Check engine oil level
(1) Park the paver on a level ground.
(2) Clean the dipstick and oil filter around, to prevent dirt falling into the engine.
(3) Pull out the dipstick and check oil level.
(4) If need to add oil, choose the same oil to add, and make the oil level within the required
range.
II). Replace engine oil and oil filter
(1) Park the paver on a level ground.
(2) Start the engine for several minutes to heat oil.
(3) Stop the engine.
(4) Put a ware under oil filter to collect oil spilling.
(5) Dismantle oil drain plug on the bottom end of engine.
(6) Dismantle oil filter.
(7) Coat a thin layer of clean oil on the seal ring of new oil filter.
(8) Tighten the filter until seal ring closely contracts with the fitting surface.
(9) Install drain plug, and then fill clean oil into the cylinder.
(10) Start the engine for several minutes and then stop it.
(11) At last check oil level and leakage, if it is abnormal, make relevant maintenance.
III) Clean the engine air filter
(1) Dismantle the air cleaner to check.
(2) Further clean or replace the air filter when using in severe environment.
(3) Reinstall the air filter, and make sure all seal rings are in correct place.
IV) Clean fuel filter
(1) Close fuel valve on the filter.
(2) Dismantle oil cup and clean it with kerosene.
(3) Dismantle filter cartridge and clean it with kerosene.
(4) Reinstall filter cartridge and oil cup and then open fuel valve.
(5) Let out the air in fuel system.
V) Check the battery
Attention! Explosive gases in the battery! Please ensure that the battery is far from cigarettes,
sparks and direct flame. Electrolyte is toxic and can cause burning. When working around the
battery, please take some measures to protect your skin, eyes and clothes.
(1) Dismantle covers of every battery compartment.
(2) Electrolyte liquid level should be 6 to 12 mm above electrodes, do not add too much.
(3) Please fill special sulfuric acid electrolyte with specific gravity of 1.265.
(4) Reinstall covers of battery compartments.
VI) Check oil level of hydraulic oil tank
(1) Park the machine on a level ground.
(2) Check whether oil level of liquidometer is normal, if it is too low; please fill the same
hydraulic oil.
VII) Clean and replace hydraulic oil filter cartridge.
(1) One filter connector of hydraulic filter is located above the hydraulic oil tank, and the filter

dips into hydraulic oil.
(2) Open the end cover of the filter, pull out filter cartridge, and clean or replace it.
(3) Put the cleaned or a new coarse filter cartridge into coarse filter, coat a layer of clean oil on
seal ring of the end cover, then tighten the end cover.
(4) Start the engine, run the hydraulic system without load, and check oil level and leakage.
VIII) Replace hydraulic oil
(1) Screw off two drain plugs under the oil tank bottom, put a container at the bottom to collect
waste oil.
(2) Reinstall drain plugs, and fill new oil.
(3) Start the engine, run the hydraulic system without load.
(4) Check oil level and leakage.
IX) Lubricate drive chain wheels and chains between the engine and speed reducer
During construction, lubricate them once every about one hour, and lubricate them with gear oil
or grease.

Note: The shorter the lubrication interval is, the longer the lifetime of chain wheels and
chains are.
