1 Make a list of things you think you throw away most
often, e.g. plastic water bottles, empty chocolate
wrappers, magazines. Compare your list with your
partner’s.

While you watch


2 You are going to watch a video about the amount of rubbish that is thrown into the sea.
Watch the first part of the video (up to 00:27) and answer the questions.
1 How many square kilometres of the Earth does the ocean cover?

2 What percentage of the Earth is covered in water?

3 Watch the second part of the video (from 00:27 to 00:50) and circle the correct words.
The sea is 1 important / special to all of us and to the many 2 fish / plants and animals that live there.
But we have a big problem. Every day nearly 3 six / seven hundred thousand kilograms of rubbish is
thrown into the 4 sea / ocean.

4 Watch the next part (from 00.50 to 01.25). Where is the North Pacific Gyre and what is it filled with?

5 Watch the final part of the video (from to 01:25) and complete the sentences with the years
in which the events happened.
1 In 29,000 toys for the bath, like rubber ducks, fell into the sea north of Hawaii.
2 In some of the toys were found in South and North America.
3 Between and many of the toys travelled into the Atlantic Ocean.
4 In a few of the toys were found on beaches in Britain.
