1. Two dice are rolled. Let X be a random variable denoting the sum of the numbers on the two dice.
a. Find the probability distribution of X . c. Find the probability distribution of Y =2 X + 1.
b. Find the mean and variance of X . d. Find the mean and variance of Y .
2. A random value X assumes the values −3 ,−2,−1,0,1,2,3 such that:
P ( X=−3 )=P ( X=−2 )=P ( X=−1 ) ; P ( X=1 )=P ( X=2 ) =P ( X=3 ) and P ( X=0 )=P ( X >0 )=P ( X <0 ) .
a. Obtain the probability mass function of X . b. Find the mean and variance of X .
c. Find the probability mass function of Y =2 X 2+ 4. d. Find the mean and variance of Y .
3. Suppose that X is uniformly distributed over (−1,1). Then find the density function of

e). Find the mean and variance of X . f). Find the mean of Y for a , b , c∧d .
4. A soft drink machine is regulated so that it discharges an average of 200 milliliters per cup. If the amount of a
drink is normally distributed with a standard deviation equal to 15 milliliters
a) What fraction of the cups will contain more than 224 milliliters?
b) What is the probability that a cup contains between 191 and 209 milliliters?
c) How many cups over will probably overflow if 230 ml cups are used for the next 100 drinks?
d) Below what value do we get the smallest 25% of the drinks?
5. The scores for a mathematics course seem to be normally distributed with mean 70 & standard deviation of 8.
If the instructor wishes to give an A grade to 10% of the students, what should be the dividing line between an
A grade and a B grade?
6. a) A normal distribution has mean μ=62.4 . Find its standard deviation if 20 % of the area under the curve
lies to the right of 79.2.
b) A random variable X has a normal distribution with standard deviation=5. Find its mean if the
probability is 0.8264 that the random variable will take on a value less than 52.5.
c) Show that 65.24% of the observations in a normally distributed population lie between
μ−1.1σ and μ+0.8 σ .
7. If a set of marks on statistics examination are approximately normally distributed with a mean of 74 and a
standard deviation of 7.9, find
a) The lowest passing mark if the lowest 10 %of the students are given F ' s .
b) The lowest mark to get grade A if the top 5 % of the students are given A ' s .
