Remote working and productivity

A lot of studies have shown that people who work remotely are more productive than those

who are office-bound (in a general way, of course). We can think of some obvious reasons

why that is: rush hour commutes that no longer exist, office chit-chat distractions that are

also avoided, and so on. But more than these benefits resulting from the fact that you might

be working from home, they’re a byproduct of something much more important -

asynchronous communication.

When you send a message without expecting immediate response, you’re participating in a

form of a-sync communication. Why the hell is it so important and beneficial for you? Here are

a few reasons we can think of:

✔️Better conversations. Talking asynchronously means you have more time to think over

your responses and be clearer in your speech, so it essentially means conversations are

more straight-to-the-point and less impulsive.

✔️You control your workday. Apart from your scheduled meetings, you choose when to

communicate and how to manage your time. This increases your productivity and your

overall happiness. If you want an extra hour in the morning to cuddle your cat, that’s up to

you (nobody cares, as long as your work is done).

✔️Last-minute requests stop being a thing. Even when your coworkers text you with

unplanned tasks, you have your own space and time to deal with it and come up with a

thought-out plan. This can really lower your stress levels, because we all know how it goes

when a coworker stops you in the office with an unexpected request for help (you panic and

stutter, in case you were wondering).

✔️More space for deep work. Having control over your time and your communications, also

means you have more opportunities to really focus on your work when you need to. You can
block off chunks of your calendar to warn everyone that you’re busy. Think of it as your own

virtual warning sign *do not disturb*.
