Activity/Quiz (March 16, 2021)

 Do the indicated task.

1. Explain why the proportion of the area to the left of z = -2.58 is 49%.

The area under the curve of an equation's graph is usually found by manipulating the equation's
unique elements directly, such as integrating the curve between the x-coordinates of interest.
Instead, you use the normal curve to look up one or two numbers in a table known as z-values
and subtract them if necessary.
The value 1.0 is assigned to the area under the entire normal curve, regardless of its precise
shape. As a result, all partial areas under the normal curve are decimal numbers between 0 and 1,
which can be easily converted to percentages by multiplying by 100.

Z-tables allow for studies up to the hundredth place of a score, allowing for four or five
significant digits in areas.
This is accomplished by following across the appropriate row from the tenth place on the left
axis to the hundredth place.

This shows why the area to the left of z = -2.58 has a proportion of.00494.

2. Explain why the total area of the region between z = -3 and z = 3 is .9974 or 99.74%.

The z-score curve must be symmetric about 0 because normal curves are symmetric about their
mean. Because the total area under any normal curve is 1, the areas on either side of z = 0 are
both 0.5. According to the Standard Deviation Rule, the majority of the area under the
standardized curve lies between z = -3 and z = +3.

This explains why the total area of the region between z = -3 and z = 3 is .9974 or 99.74%.
