Elevators are high-traffic, working machines – packed full, banged into and busy. Cambridge Architectural offers great looking
protective wall that can stand up to this kind of abuse for generations.

Cambridge Architectural’s rigid metal fabrics, made of stainless steel, add texture and depth in and around elevators.
The material is woven exactly like a fine fabric, yet it is practically indestructible, providing an ideal protective
wall-covering solution with little if any maintenance required.

Cambridge Architectural Space

Sculpting systems are unlike any other,
in their ability to carve out a space in
an almost organic fashion. Though a
truly separate space, mesh systems
allow sight, sound, heat, cooling, light
and dimension to pass freely through.

The dynamic form wrapping the structure

that elevates the roof at left is created
through a Cambridge Architectural
Space Sculpting system. Creative
architectural forms demand creative
materials that respond to the architect’s
imagination. The foremost characteristic
of Cambridge Architectural mesh
systems is aesthetic flexibility.
Cambridge Architectural Corporate Branding systems are a perfect vehicle for presenting and showcasing corporate
identity. In addition to acting as a two- or three-dimensional mounting surface, the metal fabric, itself, can be laser
etched or sandblasted to become the presentation. Or lighting effects can be projected onto the reflective surface
for added drama.

SECURITY & SAFETY

Cambridge Architectural Security and Safety systems provide a user-friendly restraint. Not so with steel bars, opaque louvers
or glaring glass. Metal fabric cannot shatter into razor-sharp shards. When used in an exterior application, such as a stairwell
tower, rainwater washes it clean and shiny. You cannot fall through it and it is capable of supporting your full weight.
Where blast mitigation or high wind speed is a factor – as in coastal regions – Cambridge Architectural also has engineered,
patented Security & Safety systems designed for these applications.

SOLAR
Cambridge Architectural Solar systems are cool. And when it comes to subtly shading people from the harsh light of day
or reducing the spill of floodlighting at night, they really shine. Solar shading provided by Cambridge Architectural reduces
a building’s heat load, cooling requirements and energy consumption. Solar systems by Cambridge Architectural are one of
the purest examples of the beautiful flexibility and functionality of architectural mesh.

Like the shelter of a tree, shadows

are muted underneath a Cambridge
Architectural Solar system, yet a
summer breeze can just as easily
pass through metal fabric as it can
through branches and leaves.

Just the presence of architectural mesh

in a space makes a statement. The
extraordinary view from the penthouse
shown above remains extraordinary
even when the metal fabric shades are
drawn. It is the ideal unconventional
material for conventional purposes.
As you can clearly see, Cambridge Architectural Ventilation systems are at once open and closed. Louvers are not,
because louvers ordinarily obstruct the view. Cambridge Architectural Ventilation systems are both functional and
beautiful. A louver is functional. Metal fabric says, “I can do anything you can do better.” Ventilation systems by
Cambridge Architectural are so naturally effective that in many instances fan motors can be downsized or eliminated.
As designers strive to go beyond the ordinary without sacrificing utility, they look for new methods and materials.
Cambridge Architectural Ventilation systems are clearly, beautifully compliant.

LANDSCAPE
INTERIOR
Cambridge Architectural Landscape Interior systems distinguish large interior open spaces with a graceful presence.
Landscape Interiors enhance heating, ventilating and air conditioning, provide a relatively open view, promote security,
guide foot traffic, permit space sculpting and perform as decorative interior facades.
Landscape Interior systems also offer an excellent opportunity to use a play of lighting on the metal fabric surface to
add excitement and drama to the space. Additionally, light from LCD projectors can display video information directly
onto the highly reflective metal fabric surface.
Cambridge Architectural Landscape
Interior systems enhance the effects of
dramatic lighting, articulation, texture,
and the beauty of other materials used
within the space. That’s because metal
fabric is attractive to the eye, without
having to be the attraction itself.

Here, the soft white surfaces of the

to provide an ethereal appearance

4 INTRODUCTION
SYSTEMS

Occasionally architects and designers contact Cambridge

Architectural excited to learn more about a specific metal
fabric pattern, only to learn that it’s incompatible with its
intended application, either by virtue of the metal fabric
pattern itself or the hardware required to install it.

To ensure that you specify the right Cambridge Architectural

system – appropriate for your specific application and design
vision – it’s important to specify your system following these
three easy steps:

1) Identify a system – Determine which system best

defines your application

2) Select an attachment – How the metal fabric is

installed and its installed appearance

3) Choose a metal fabric pattern – What the

weave looks like and how it behaves
IDENTIFY A SYSTEM 5

SYSTEMS
The specification process starts by identifying the
appropriate Cambridge Architectural system. These
systems are defined by the primary function the
metal fabric will serve in your design.

Cambridge Architectural systems are described

as follows:

SYSTEMS
The primary function of Cambridge Architectural Facade
systems is to visually differentiate the exterior of a building.
These systems are generally installed within close proximity
to the building’s wall or roof. Facade systems are frequently
combined with custom lighting for dramatic effect.

8 SPACE SCULPTING
SYSTEMS
SPACE SCULPTING 9

SYSTEMS
Cambridge Architectural Space Sculpting systems define interior
or exterior space. For exterior applications – unlike Facade systems
that remain in close proximity to walls or roofs – Space Sculpting
systems meander freely away from a structure or can be entirely
independent of the structure. Space Sculpting helps manage foot
traffic, creates utilitarian space, shades the sun, masks industrial
elements and complements building security. For interior space,
Space Sculpting systems are utilized vertically to define space
or direct traffic, or used horizontally to sculpt overhead space.
Space Sculpting systems are frequently combined with custom
lighting for dramatic effect.

unique opportunities for displaying elements of corporate branding.
Corporate signage can be attached to these systems. Logos can
be laser etched or sandblasted directly onto metal fabric. Custom
metal fabric patterns featuring corporate colors or other exotic
metals are also available. Lighting effects or branding imagery
can also be projected onto the surface of metal fabric patterns
with a highly desirable, unique result.

The primary function of Cambridge Architectural Security &

Safety systems is to provide aesthetically pleasing methods of
protection for both people and property.

CATEGORIES
F A L L P R O T E C T I O N – Example applications include: parking
garage bays, stairwell enclosures, stair rail infill, balconies and elevated
walkways.
Economical fall protection solutions incorporate Cambridge Architectural
tension attachment hardware (20). As embedded supports are needed
only at the top and bottom of the panel of metal fabric, these attachments
dramatically reduce the number of embedded supports required.
With the metal fabric mounted within 4” of the structure, tension
attachments can be designed to meet or exceed the fall protection
and load requirements for most areas while eliminating the need for
additional handrail infill panels.
SECURITY & SAFETY 13

SYSTEMS
Cambridge Architectural Eclipse, Scroll, Talon and Velocity tension
attachment methods can be designed to meet or exceed design load
requirements for fall protection for the following building codes:
• SBC-1999/SBCCI – Southern Building Code Conference International
• IBC-2000/ICC – International Code Council
• BOCA-1999 – Building Officials and Code Administrators

S E C U R I T Y – Example applications include: parking garage bays,
stairwell enclosures, valuable merchandise displays, casino currency
exchange kiosks, and airport and other public security checkpoints.
A major security benefit of Cambridge Architectural mesh systems applied
to parking garage bays and stairwells is the high degree of visibility provided
to deter against theft and assault. When used for merchandise display,
it provides an aesthetically unique alternative to glass.
W I N D A B A T E M E N T – Utilizing Cambridge Architectural patent
pending tension attachment hardware (20), on a project-by-project
basis, Cambridge Architectural provides architectural mesh systems
designed to meet the requirements of coastal areas. These systems
withstand wind gusts up to 140 mph and can also be designed as a
barrier for wind-born materials.
For these systems, attachment brackets are modified to minimize
structural stress on the brackets and building during high wind speed
conditions. Complete wind tunnel and missile impact testing are
available on a project-by-project basis.
B L A S T M I T I G A T I O N – Metal fabric is an ideal material for
capturing curtain wall materials subject to explosion. Utilizing Cambridge
Architectural patent pending tension attachment hardware (20), on a

16 VENTILATION
SYSTEMS
VENTILATION 17

SYSTEMS
Cambridge Architectural Ventilation systems are ideal particularly
where a unique design element is desired for open structure
construction such as parking garages and stair towers. For
example, architectural mesh provides a means for auto exhaust
to vent freely to the outside of a parking structure. In many
instances, HVAC systems can be downsized or eliminated.
And for stair towers, in a fire event, the metal fabric allows
smoke to vent, while providing visibility for fire rescue.
Cambridge Architectural Ventilation systems are also used in
interiors where significant ventilation is required, or as a unique
alternative to traditional louvers or grilles.

SYSTEMS
Cambridge Architectural Landscape Interior systems are designed
for large interior expanses. The metal fabric is a predominant
component of the interior design. Typically, Landscape Interior
systems provide one or more functionalities beyond aesthetics,
such as fall protection, ventilation, or space sculpting. Landscape
Interior systems are frequently combined with custom lighting for
dramatic effect.

20 INTRODUCTION

Cambridge Architectural offers ten standard attachments for

metal fabrics. Each attachment provides a unique installed
aesthetic. Five attachments are tensioned, meaning the metal
fabric is held in tension across an expanse. Four utilize rigid
frames and one attaches metal fabric like a traditional curtain.

Elements of Cambridge Architectural

Tension Attachments
L O A D B A R / T E N S I O N R O D – These elements are
located at the connection points where the panel of metal fabric
meets the top and bottom support brackets and intermediate
ATTACHMENTS

brackets. Cambridge Architectural engineers determine the size

and location of the load bar/tension rod during the design phase.
Since tolerance conditions at the job site occasionally require
adjustment to the load bar/tension rod, Cambridge tension
systems have been designed so adjustments can be made
quickly and easily during installation.

S U P P O R T B R A C K E T S – These elements, designed to

integrate with the load bar/tension rod elements, are located
at the top and bottom of each panel of metal fabric and serve to
support the panel. Cambridge Architectural engineers determine
the spacing of support brackets during the design phase.
Nominal bracket spacing varies from 18”– 36” depending on
metal fabric panel size and load conditions for regional areas.

I N T E R M E D I A T E B R A C K E T S – These non-structural
tieback support elements keep the metal fabric panel away
from the structure and maintain a consistent distance from
the top to bottom of each panel. Typical intermediate
attachments are required every 10’ of panel length and are
spaced 18”-36” horizontally depending on metal fabric panel
size and load conditions for regional areas.

Attachment Support Options

Most Cambridge Architectural attachments, both tension and
rigid frame, require structural support. Cambridge Architectural
engineers provide consultative services to structural engineers
for determining proper design and integration of supports.
INTRODUCTION 21

FOUR SUPPORT OPTIONS

ARE RECOMMENDED.

CONCEALED EMBEDDED SUPPORT –

These supports can be integrated into precast and cast-in-place
construction, or structural steel support framing. Support
brackets for tension attachments can be anchored directly to
precast and cast-in-place wall panels where concealed embeds
are provided. For tension attachments, concealed embeds
are required only at the top and bottom of a wall panel, with
intermediate brackets requiring minimal structural support.

ATTACHMENTS
SURFACE-MOUNTED EMBEDDED SUPPORT –
These supports are created via flat angle, or channeled supports.
This method is more costly than concealed embedded supports
and requires adequate support material (i.e., concrete or steel).
Support brackets for tension attachments can be anchored
directly to precast and cast-in-place wall panels where surface-
mounted embeds are provided. For tension attachments, surface-
mounted embeds are required only at the top and bottom of
a wall panel, with intermediate brackets requiring minimal
structural support.

STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAMING SUPPORT -

Structural steel framing support is frequently required for aesthetic
or functional reasons. Support brackets and intermediate brackets
for tension attachments and frames for rigid frame systems can
be mounted directly to the steel framing support. Tension
attachments provide the benefit of a simplified framing design as
support is only required at the top and bottom of the wall panel,
with intermediate brackets requiring minimal structural support.

EPOXY ANCHORS -
These supports can be designed to handle the high loads of
the top and bottom supports without embedded support or
additional steel. Epoxy anchors are drilled on sight and set in
place with an epoxy resin to ensure proper support.

44 INTRODUCTION

Cambridge International, parent company of Cambridge

Architectural, has been the leading American weaver of metal
mesh for more than 90 years. All Cambridge Architectural
metal fabric patterns are woven in a traditional manner on
architectural looms with ongoing supervision by metal artisans.

Each metal fabric pattern manufactured by Cambridge

Architectural has a distinct look. Some patterns are flexible
in two directions, some in only one direction and some are
entirely rigid. Several patterns are closed weaves, while others
feature a certain percentage of open area.

Non-corrosive Materials
METAL FABRIC

Most Cambridge Architectural products are made from stainless

steel, providing long-term corrosion resistance and service life.

Passivation of All Welded Products

Cambridge Architectural systems require welded fabrication.
A passivation process is provided for all exterior systems
that incorporate welded stainless steel. This process removes
impurities that are presented during the welding process,
preventing any surface oxidation that may occur when
metal fabric panels are exposed to the elements.
INTRODUCTION 45

Background Finishes
For interior applications Cambridge Architectural offers
background-painted finishes on its rigid metal fabric patterns.
Custom finish options may be recommended by Cambridge
Architectural upon review of a project.

Additional Exotic Metals

For aesthetic purposes, metal fabric patterns may also
incorporate other exotic metals such as brass or copper.
Contact Cambridge for optional metals.

Maintenance
Cambridge Architectural mesh systems are highly resistant to
denting, scratching and corrosion. Only minimal maintenance
is required.

For interiors, regular dusting can be accomplished with

vacuum, mop or soft cloth. More extensive cleaning requires
a soft bristle brush with a mild, water-soluble detergent. Solvents or
retail cleaning materials should not be used.

For exteriors, Cambridge Architectural recommends annual

power washing to remove any potentially harmful pollutants
and oxidants.

Refurbishing and Recycling

METAL FABRIC

If metal fabric is damaged, it can be shipped back to Cambridge

Architectural for repair or replacement. Consult Cambridge
for pricing.

Stainless steel contains a large percentage of recycled content

and is itself readily recyclable.
