Breastfeeding
• Breast milk is always sterile,complete diet, and
present at a temperature equal to body
temperature

• Contains certain amino acids, cholesterol, fatty


acids which can’t be found in cows milk
advantages of breastfeeding
to the baby
• Contains secretary AB, e.g. IgA , protects the
baby against intestinal bacteria infection.

• Lactoferrin provides nutritional immunity to the


infant.

• Low sugar and leptin level in breast milk. So


breast fed babies are less obese than bottle fed
babies
• EGF from breast milk promotes growth of infant
tissues

• The duration of breastfeeding is proportional to


the level of intelligence

• Oxytocin released during suckling which
increases uterine contractions and decreases
uterine bleeding

• The rate of weight loss is faster in breastfeeding


mothers

• The duration of breastfeeding is proportional to


increased protection against breast cancer
Disadvantages

• Harmful substances ( alcohol,


contraceptive estrogen, nicotine,….) can
be transported to the baby through the
milk

• Active infections ( HIV , TB ) pass from


mother to baby
