DIRECTION: Identify the communication principles needed in the following situations in business. Explain to
the class how these communication principles will solve the business conflict.
1. Irish and Michelle are two clerks at a store. Although they usually work at the same job level, Irish has been
asked to assume staff supervisory duties until another supervisor is hired. Irish is regarded as a reliable
employee, but seems to work on her own priorities, as far as Michelle is concerned. Irish's main responsibilities
are setting up displays and keeping the shelves stocked.
Michelle has asked Irish to quickly stock the shelves when new merchandise arrives, but Irish seems to insist on
finishing off whatever display she is working on, rather than stocking the shelves. The two are regularly at odds,
since Michelle does not think that Irish is willing to take direction from her.
Communication is Relational: Irish needs to understand that she is merely a temporary staff supervisor. She
should also understand that just because she has a better position does not mean that everything must go her
way. She has a partner who will help her with the task and ensure that they complete all of their
responsibilities equally.
2. Renz is a senior-level employee at the advertising firm for over two years. As a result of a merger, a new
Executive Director, Mary, has been named. On her first day, Mary sent out a m This file s out a memo
highlighting her background and educational experience in management, she did not hold an advanced degree.
Many of the employees noticed that although she had over 15 ed that Ever since Mary has been assigned to
oversee Renz's department, she has consistently bullied most of the senior-level employees. In the beginning,
many employees thought it was her "trying to exert her leadership" to a new group. However, in the past three
months, Renz's team has shared stories about her behavior similar to a bully. Others that have left informed HR
about Mary's behavior; however, HR never did anything, so Renz does not believe it will help.
Communication is Relational: All acts of harassment and bullying should be reported by Renz and his staff.
They must do it, however, in a calm and respectful manner for both parties. Applying the 3 R's policy -
Report, Recognize, and Respond - is the communication principles required to report the bullying situation
in the given circumstance.
3. Vianne has been employed at a new company for about six months. A co-worker, David, has been repeatedly
verbally harassing her. She finally decides to file a complaint with Human Resources. She meets the HR
Director, Lawrence, for an appointment.
During their meeting, he never takes any notes as she speaks. He keeps checking his phone and also his
Facebook on his laptop. She even notices that he is doodling on his notepad. At the end of the conversation,
Vianne wonders if Lawrence really understood her concern at all.
Communication is Transactional: If HR is refusing to cooperate or assist you in assessing the problem, you
should contact the company's President or CEO. Not only would it be beneficial to you, but it would also be
beneficial to other potential employees and workers.
4. Olive asks her co-worker, Michael, to drop off a package at the post office after work on Tuesday. It is not
too far out of the way home for him to do so, and Olive lives farther away. It is important that the package be at
its destination, National Manufacturing Company, by noon on Wednesday.
It includes a proposal that business expansion is going to be discussed at a meeting with international business
partners who are in town only for that day. Olive finds out on Wednesday afternoon that the package never
arrived. She is held responsible.
Communication is both Presentational and Representational: As the coworker in this situation, I would
have to provide a compelling justification for not delivering the box to the post office. That package must be
your responsibility. She should have warned Michael about the package weeks before instead of delivering it
the day before. so that they may prepare for the meeting in plenty of time
5. Victoria is the head of the Purchasing Department. One of her staff asks for her assistance for a project that is
due soon. She also has a new employee who needs her mentoring. Then, she needs to meet with the Board of
Directors tomorrow for an important quarterly meeting.
The foreign suppliers will be arriving tonight and she needs to pick them up from the airport and take them out
for dinner. In addition, she has several important presentations to prepare in the morning for the board meeting.
She is feeling anxious and tense; she finds it difficult to concentrate on what needs to be done. Her employees
notice her being stressed out.
Communication is Transactional: Her staff must at the very least try to lighten her load by asking if there is
anything they can do. The employee must lead her and give her instructions on how to complete her duty
appropriately. A simple trade might benefit not only her, but the entire team.
