COMMUNICATION

Your definitions of communication:

Communication is part of our daily lives forever, you can’t dismissed it. It is the way in
order for us to communicate, convey and exchange messages not just from other people but also
towards other people. An art that enables us to understand and make our own perception about
the information. Thus, to give us awareness, ask our opinion, be in harmony with others,
respecting their views and even to pursue your admired person. Communication makes our life
better, as well as to be knowledgeable and to learn about new things. There is a saying “no man
is an island” by John Donne, interrelated with “no living avoids communicating”. Once you hear
the word communication you ought to think, that it is talking to other people. In fact,
communication happens when you talk, gesture someone by smiling, reading the authors piece,
symbols you’ve seen, and even actions towards people. You can’t see the word itself but your
doing it verbally and non-verbally. Communication stands out when processsed and executed
effectively, not just subjectively but unbiased towards other individuals way, of how they viewed
it.

Activity 1
Rank the principles of communication from most to least important according to what you have
understood from the lesson then write your explanation why you say so. Use the chart below.

Trustworthiness
1
Active Listening
2
Non-Judgmental

3
Value Difference
4
No Assumptions
5
Authenticity or truthfulness
6

Above are the principles of Communication rank one to six. This helps to achieve an effective
communication and exchange of messages. As I can see the those principles are interconnected like a
guide for proper communicating to others. The first one is the trustworthiness, it is the most important
because it starts with it. If you are not worthy to be trusted, communication fails. People tend to
communicate to other people who they think are dependable and trustworthy. For example, you are
sitting under the tree when your bestfriend pops out and shares that he has a crush on Ana, he said it
to you because he thinks that you won’t say It to anyone. The second is after saying that he has a crush
on Ana, active listening comes. You listen to him attentively to understood why he like that girl. He said
he admire this girl because she is pretty, smart, helpful and she’s kind but on your part you doubt
because you don’t even meet this girl. The third rank comes, wherein you realized that non-judgment
must be present if you don’t even know the girl he’s talking. He continue saying that this girl’s custom
is different, she’s more traditional, and courtship is a must in their family. You said you must court her
in a traditional way, although it may seem new for us who live in the city, not knowing your valuing the
differences because accepting them is valuing them. For 4 hours you have heard his stories , he said
Activity 2
she doesn’t even notice him as someone she’ll love and they are only friends. Rank five comes,
wherein you need to clarify why she doesn’t notice him as lover to avoid assumptions in the
communciation. Hence, authenticity comes wherein you response with what to be the cause of
unecognized likeness or love from you bestfriend. And what ought to do inorder for him to be
recognized.
Observe one communication situation (at home, from videos via internet or live stream or
whichever is applicable) and list down the principles of communication present. Write a
critique paper in 2-3 paragraphs following the guide questions below.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the principles present in the situation?
2. Discuss each principle and its importance in achieving an effective communication.

Principles of Communication in Video Call

Video call is a way to communicate with other people, especially if they are away or for
sending regards for families that resides and work outside the country. In the reason that we don’t
have a choice but to stay at home due to this pandemic we are facing. However, we can recognize
principles of communication present when we are video calling with someone. For example your
mother on the screen said that you need to say to your aunt that the money is already in her bank
account. As you can see the first one is trustworthiness from the word itself worthy of your trust.
Wherein your mother communicate to you because you’re trustworthy and dependable for the said
information. You have an effective interrelationship towards your mother. The second is active
listening, being attentive to hear the other peson want to say. The person you are video calling said
her number for contact, at this moment you need focus and hear it clearly to write it down. Third, no
assumption, wherein you must not assume things without proof just by seeing a man with your mother
on the camera. Clarifying things is important in communication.

Lastly, authenticity or truthfulness, being genuine or real not just physically but also virtually.
Say what you really feel regarding the situation or problems you are facing, with your mother. This
principles of communication helps to achieve effective communication towards people. It helps us to
be better and have healthy relationship as truthfulness and trustworthiness is present. Furthermore, to
listen and understand as much as possible to others before you talk to absorb the information
efficiently. Communication is less than talking and more on listening. In addition, we can learn to
clarify, be unbiased as well as not to be fully subjective because people are unique and have different
perceptions. People are not born for themselves only, but also for the others.

LESSON 3: COMMUNICATION ETHICS

Activity 1
Answer the following questions based on what you have understood from the lesson.
1. What is communication ethics?
Communication is the exchange of messages and ethics are moral principles concerned
with your right and wrong behavior, good or bad behavior.Communication ethics is exchanging
thoughts or messages in regards with good or right behavior, right and wrong. It inhibits the
communication moral principles, considering with what is the right and wrong behavior while
communicating. Thus, affecting it to avoid ineffective communication. Hence, communicating
while being truthful and honest is being ethical.
2. Using your own words, differentiate ethical from unethical communication. Cite examples
to justify your answer.
Ethical communication is having a good behavior while communicating with others not
just verbally but also non-verbally. It considers a lot and unbiased towards someones perception
about things as you understans and respect their beliefs and cultures and vice versa. For
example, when there is someone talking, you listen to them. Speaking from your own beliefs as
well as experiences, makes you an ethical person. Having an accurate judgment and being
honest are good behavior while communicating. As well as respecting their personal boundaries
and managing your own personal boundaries. In contrary with unethical communication that is
having a bad or wrong behavior in communicating. It interrupts the process of communication
and make it ineffective. For example, judging someones opinions without basis. You don’t give
time to others to talk and just continue talking. Unethical can happen in written papers or even
on quotes, wherein you don’t cite who’s the author of the piece. Not protecting and
dissemination about someones personal information is unethical.
3. Students these days are very much exposed to social media where they use it as an
avenue to express themselves. Comment on this.
As the years passes by, this social media platforms with increasing users around the
world are a way of expressions. In relation to communication, ethical and unethical arises in
social medias. Students tend to express themselves not thinking that they don’t manage their
own personal boundaries. Thus, not realizing that audiences are knowing their personal
information, gossip behind their back, especially if it is a rant, and judging them for who they
are. My former subject in computer teaches us some etiquettes, and one of this is “think before
you click” Some of the post they convey for me is a way for seeking attention and consensus.
In fact, students nowadays seem to forget that they must be centered for learning and control
themselves for using social medias, as it affects your decision, knowledge and exploit your
minds. Not knowing that you’re part of the so called bandwagon, they do it and you also do it.
Having freedom is okay but there are limitations, it is okay to post and express yourselves but
don’t forget that everything has limitations for you to truly experience freedom that won’t feel
others to be harmed of threatened for your action.
4. Why is it important to be ethical in communicating?
It is important to be ethical in communicating to achieve an effective communication not
just between people but to written texts, symbols and gestures conveyed. Being ethical teaches
and governs your behavior allowing you to understand for what is mostly right and good as
opposite to wrong and bad in communicating. It encourages harmony and unity within the
society. Thus, strengthening the bond or relationships along individuals, especially if you do
mostly good things. It also enables you to be responsible for what you decide, act and say
towards other. In addtion it promotes acceptance of diversities, cultures and norms.
