Affiliate Marketing

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is an advertising model in which a company compensates third-party
publishers to generate traffic or leads to the company’s
products and services. The third-party publishers are
affiliates, and the commission fee incentivizes them to find
ways to promote the company.

The Internet has increased the prominence of affiliate

marketing. Amazon popularized the practice by creating an
affiliate marketing program whereby websites and bloggers
put links to the Amazon page for a reviewed or discussed
product to receive advertising fees when a purchase is made. In this sense, affiliate marketing is
essentially a pay for performance marketing program where the act of selling is outsourced across
a vast network.

According to Business Insider, 15% of e-commerce revenue can be attributed to affiliate

marketing.

Understanding Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing predates the Internet, but it is the world of digital marketing, analytics, and
cookies that have made it a billion-dollar industry. A company running an affiliate marketing
program can track the links that bring in leads and, through internal analytics, see how many
converts to sales.

An e-commerce merchant wanting to reach a wider base of Internet users and shoppers may hire an
affiliate. An affiliate could be the owner of multiple websites or email marketing lists; the more websites
or email lists that an affiliate has, the wider his network. The hired affiliate then communicates and
promotes the products offered on the e-commerce platform to his network. The affiliate does this
by implementing banner ads, text ads, or links on its multiple owned websites or via email to its
clientele. Firms use advertisements in the form of articles, videos, and images to draw an
audience’s attention to a service or product.

Affiliates redirect visitors who click on one of these links or ads to the e-commerce site. If they
purchase the product or service, the e-commerce merchant credits the affiliate’s account with the
agreed-upon commission, which could be 5% to 10% of the sales price.

The goal of using an affiliate marketer is to increase sales—a win-win solution for the merchant
and the affiliate.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

 Affiliate marketing is a marketing scheme in which a company compensates affiliate

partners for business created from the affiliate's marketing tactics.
 Firms typically pay per sale and less frequently by click or impression.
 As technology evolves, it is becoming increasingly easier for fraudsters to generate
multiple clicks and impressions via software.
 Firms use innovative ways to circumvent fraudulent attempts to drive business.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF AFFILIATE

MARKETING

Advantages

1. Merchants gain a wider place to sell their products and services, resulting in more customers
and more sales.

2. Merchants can gain more customers without spending valuable time in searching for them.
3. Programs that track compile statistics from affiliate sites provide reliable and current client
behavior on trends and demands at no extra cost.

4. The affiliate marketing program provides an easy way to create additional sources of income
for website publishers and owners. Marketing banners of merchant’s products generate instant
sales wherein they get a commission.

5. It does not require a sizeable investment on the part of the affiliate.

6. The affiliate does not have to worry about customer support, book keeping, and e-commerce
related headaches since in affiliate marketing, the merchant handles it all; all the affiliate needs
to do is promote and resell the product.

7. An affiliate marketer enjoys the luxury of being his own boss and work on his own time. He
can work only for a few hours or more and generate income 24/7 wherever he may be located in
the world.

8. An affiliate marketer can still maintain his present work or business and have the affiliate
marketing income to supplement his financial position. With a laptop and an internet connection,
anybody can work almost anywhere even while enjoying a vacation.

9. For clients, they do not have to drive all the way to the merchant's store or retailer to
physically buy the product or engage the services of a service provider.

These are only some of the advantages of affiliate marketing. However, it is also best to be aware
that this online business also has some disadvantages.

Disadvantages

1. There is the possibility that some merchants may incur high commission costs and costly set
up and maintenance fees due to affiliate facilitators/brokers.

2. The affiliates may engage in false and misleading advertising in order to get sales
commissions. Unscrupulous affiliates may make claims and promises regarding the product and
services, which are completely wrong or extremely exaggerated. In cases like these, the merchant
usually receives complaints and lose any potential consumer.

3. Unscrupulous and dishonest merchants may arbitrarily close down programs without
informing the affiliates and without paying commissions.

4. Merchants may promise high commissions to attract new affiliates then drop commission rates
after a week or two.

5. Link hijackers can hijack affiliate links and get paid for the commissions instead.

6. There is also false advertising, unlawful use of trade names, logos, or brands.

No matter the disadvantages, affiliate marketing still remains as one of the best ways to make
money online. Marketers simply have to understand that by doing their homework and research
beforehand and by implementing simple security measures, they can easily negate all these
disadvantages in order to enjoy the advantages of the affiliate marketing program.

Blogging
Blogging refers to writing, photography, and other media that's self-published online. Blogging
started as an opportunity for individuals to write diary-style entries, but it has since been
incorporated into websites for many businesses. The hallmarks of blogging include frequent
updates, informal language, and opportunities for readers to engage and start a conversation.
What Is Blogging?
The word blog is actually a shortened form of its original name, "weblog." These weblogs
allowed early internet users to "log" the details of their day in diary-style entries. Blogs often
allow readers to comment, so as they became more common, communities sprung up around
popular blogs.

The content of blogs varies significantly. For example, travel blogs may feature many pictures
with few written passages, while political blogs may weigh in with wordy takes on the news of
the day. The popularity of YouTube and similar sites also gave rise to video blogging, or
"vlogging."

Like most internet-based innovations, many entrepreneurs saw marketing potential in having a
blog, and the adoption of blogging among the business community helped further increase the
popularity of the medium. Not only can a blog be used for marketing a business, but it can also
become a home business in and of itself.

How Blogging Works

Blogging is as simple as obtaining a website and publishing original content on it. Tech-savvy bloggers
can buy a domain name and build the website themselves. Those with less HTML knowledge can create
an account with sites like WordPress that simplify the web design and publishing process.

Blogs are usually simple websites. Older pieces may be archived in separate sections of the site, and there
may be a separate page with contact info or a bio, but the blog itself is usually just a single page that can
be scrolled through—similar to the news feed on social media sites like Facebook. As with a Facebook
news feed, a blog displays the newest content at the top of the page.

All of the posts on a blog are usually created by a single author. However, when a company or
organization maintains a blog, it may pay for blog content—either by hiring a team of writers or buying
content to post.

Another unique feature of blogging is interlinking. This occurs when a blogger links to another person's
blog within their own blog post. For example, if a music teacher maintains a blog, and they write a blog
post about how to form a chord, they might link to a musician's blog to show an example of the chords in
action. A political blogger may link to another politics blog and then discuss how they agree or disagree
with a post on that blog. Interlinking, along with the comment section, fosters the sense of community
that makes blogs unique.

ADVANTAGES
 Good for SEO: Search engines love new content, and as a result, blogging is a great search
engine optimization (SEO) tool. A defining feature of blogs is the frequency with which
they're updated, and that fresh content helps improve a website's SEO performance.
 Maintains communication with customers: Blog posts can keep your customers and clients
up-to-date on what's going on, let them know about new deals, and provide tips. The more
frequently you post useful content, the more often a customer visits your blog, and the more
likely they are to spend money.
 Builds rapport with customers: Not only does a blog allow you to show off what you know
—building your expertise and credibility—but people can also post comments and interact
with you. That allows customers to get to know you, and hopefully, develop relationships
that turn into purchases.
 Generate alternate income: Successful blogs can make money themselves. Along with your
product or service, blogs can generate income from alternate sources such as advertising
and affiliate products.

Blogging is flexible and portable, making it a great option for people who want to be a lifestyle
entrepreneur.

DISADVANTAGES
 Time-consuming: The success of blogging comes from having people return, and they only
return when there's new stuff to read. That means bloggers need to generate content at least
several times a week to be effective at engaging readers and increasing SEO.
 Constantly requires fresh ideas: Posting several times per week won't be beneficial if the
ideas aren't fresh and engaging. It can be draining to constantly conceptualize and execute
fresh content. The good news is that you don't have to do it all yourself. You can have guest
writers or hire freelancers. Another option is to curate content from others. You can
buy private label right (PLR) content and modify it for your blog.
 Payoff is delayed: One of the biggest frustrations with blogging is that it's time-consuming
with little payoff in the beginning. It takes time to build up a readership and momentum.
 Blogging in and of itself won't generate income: At one time, posting an article was
enough to generate traffic and income. Today, a successful blog needs email marketing,
additional perks such as content upgrades, and an engaged social network, such as
a Facebook group.

Requirements for a Blog

The good news is that starting a blog or adding a blog to your existing site is relativity easy and
affordable. All you have to do is follow these four steps.

Set Up the Blog

There are free blog options such as WordPress and Blogger, but to retain control and a
professional image, consider investing in a domain name and a hosting service. You can
install WordPress or another content management system on your host if you don't want to create
the whole site from scratch.

Add Content

Once your blog is up and running, you need to keep it active with new content to grow your
business. Develop a set schedule for writing and posting blog articles. Create a content
calendar so you always know what you're going to post.

Market

Like all other business ideas, your success comes from marketing and getting your message in
front of your target market. Great ways to reach your market are through social
media apps, email lists, and by reaching out to other bloggers, podcasters, and media outlets for
publicity. Repurpose your blog content to promote your business across platforms, such as by
using quotes on your Twitter or Instagram profiles, or by creating a video of your article to share
on YouTube.

Add Income Streams

While your blog can complement an existing business, it's also a great way to add additional
income streams to your home business. You can promote other companies' products and services
in affiliate marketing. You can advertise or feed ad networks, such as AdSense, on to your blog.
If you have a service business you're promoting with your blog, you can create your
own information products to complement it. Or, if you have your own product, you can offer a
service.

History of the media (considering

international and national arena)
Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or
company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the
profit for each sale that you make.

There are 2 sides of an affiliate equation: the product creator and seller and the affiliate marketer.
Therefore, affiliate marketing can be seen as the process of spreading product creation and
product marketing across different parties, where each party receives a share of the revenue
according to their contribution.

You can be both the creator and the marketer and still profit from the underlying idea of sharing
revenue.

The Merchant: Sometimes also known as the creator, the seller, the brand, the retailer, or the
vendor. This is the party that creates the product. From solo entrepreneurs to startups to massive
Fortune 500 companies, anyone could be the merchant behind an affiliate marketing program.
They don’t even have to be actively involved. They just have to have a product to sell.

The Affiliate: This party is sometimes also known as the publisher. Affiliates can also range
from single individuals to entire companies. An affiliate marketing business can produce a few
hundred dollars in commissions each month or tens of millions of dollars.

It’s where the marketing happens. An affiliate promotes one or multiple affiliate products and
tries to attract and convince potential customers of the value of the merchant’s product so that
they actually end up buying it. The Consumer: The customer or consumer makes the affiliate
system go ’round. Without sales, there aren’t any commissions to hand out and no revenue to be
shared.

The affiliate will try to market to the consumer on whatever channel they see fit, whether that’s a
social network, digital billboards or through a search engine using content marketing on a blog.
Whether the consumer knows that they are part of an affiliate marketing system or not is mostly
up to the affiliate.

Some choose to let their consumers know and more and more affiliates tend to be transparent
about their marketing being incentivized financially, but others don’t.

They let the tracking system work in the background, where the customer can follow the
purchase process just as usual and the affiliate still ends up being paid a commission. The
consumer will not typically pay a higher price to the affiliate marketer, as the cost of the affiliate
network is already included in the retail price.

The Network: Only some consider the network part of the affiliate marketing equation. But, I
believe that an affiliate marketing guide needs to include networks, because, in many cases, a
network works as an intermediary between the affiliate and the merchant. While you could
technically promote an online course someone has created and just arrange a direct revenue share
with them, letting a network such as CLICKBANK or Commission Junction handle the payment
and product delivery puts a more serious note on your affiliate marketing.

Sometimes, affiliates have to go through an affiliate network to even be able to promote the
product. For example, this happens if the merchant only manages their affiliate program on that
network. The affiliate network then also serves as a database of lots of products, out of which the
affiliate marketer can choose which to promote. The affiliate network then also serves as a
database of lots of products, out of which the affiliate marketer can choose which to promote. In
the case of promoting consumer products, like tools, books, toys and household items, the
biggest affiliate network, by far, is Amazon. Their Amazon Associates affiliate program lets you
promote any item that is sold on their platform. Anyone can sign up and then generate a custom
affiliate link to Amazon products. If someone purchases through your link, you earn a small
commission. With the basic terms clarified, let’s get an overview of how you can best get started
with building your affiliate marketing business.
You can become a merchant or an affiliate.

The 4 steps of becoming a merchant are:

 Coming up with a valid product idea.

 Validating that idea by getting people to pre-pay you for the product.
 Creating that product.
 Finding affiliates, likely through an affiliate network, to partner with who will promote your
product.

The more common and slightly easier route is becoming an affiliate.

There are also 4 steps that you can follow:

 Starting to review products in your niche
 Building an email list
 Using live webinars to educate your audience and make sales
 Growing your affiliate business with PPC advertising

Affiliate marketing is a good way to get started with online marketing.

“Blogging’ refers to writing, photography, and other media that's self-published online. Blogging

THE HISTORY OF AFFILIATE

MARKETING BEGINS BEFORE THE
INTERNET
Affiliate marketing has come to be known as something that happens online. You click a link,
which directs you to a page or a product online, and then the link owner gets paid a small amount
for that click. But it can also refer to things like when a mechanic gives a customer a discount for
referring them to a new customer. The person who is doing the referring is getting paid by
getting a discount towards their purchase. It is the same concept, just in the real world. This kind
of affiliate marketing is used, but not traced as much as online links. You can ask your customer
where they heard about you in an effort to learn more about where your clients are coming from,
but in the end, you don’t have all the data like you would through an online tracking link. The
internet has made this kind of marketing more profitable and easier to expand your business. So
while the history of affiliate marketing really started before the internet, it’s the internet that
made this marketing strategy widely available as a business model to the masses.

Amazon

Amazon was the first company to use affiliate marketing as a program that was available to the
general public. Their system known as Associates Program allowed people to sign up to be able
to offer links on their website. It was launched in 1996. As a result of sharing the links to
Amazon’s products, the user was paid a small amount of money in return for referring new
customers. In the history of affiliate marketing, Amazon was the first major company to widely
use affiliate marketing as one of their marketing platforms. This became the model for other
affiliate companies to base their programs on, and the growth of affiliate marketing continues
even today.

THE INVENTION OF COOKIES

Cookies were added to the web to track what users were doing and this changed the history of
affiliate marketing forever. They are tiny pieces of data that are stored in the user’s browser in
order to help the browser track what you are doing. This can be helpful if you’d like to return to
what you were doing, or if you’d like to remember something. But it is mostly useful for outside
third parties to have data about how people are using their website and information. The
invention of cookies made affiliate marketing even better because people could track where the
information was coming from, giving them more clues about what works and what doesn’t work.
Just in case you were wondering, cookies get their name from a web browser programmer named
LOU MONTULLI. He started calling them cookies, which comes from the term “magic
cookies”. Magic cookies are known as small packets of data that are sent and received in an
unchanged manner, not to be confused with fortune cookies that come with an embedded
message that is relevant to the information. The First Affiliate Networks
In 1998, Commission Junction and CLICKBANK opened their doors for business and they still
remain among the most popular affiliate networks in the history of affiliate marketing. These
affiliate networks made it possible for smaller businesses that aren’t a part of Amazon to get in
on the affiliate action. The merchants could pay a small fee to belong to the network and then the
network would pay people to use the links to the different products. It helped businesses expand
their reach and other people to get paid for helping with the process. It is really a cool idea that
can be implemented in lots of different places. Today, there are quite a few affiliate networks
available.

***** Objectives and KPI the media can achieve (KPI MUST BE CLEAR, SPECIFIC,
AND MEASUREABLE) *****

Revenue Goals

The end goal of any affiliate marketing program is to bring in revenue, and savvy affiliate
marketers set short- and long-term income objectives to push them to continually increase the
value of their services. Affiliate marketing companies can be paid in a number of ways,
including each time a website visitor clicks an advertisement or every time a click leads to a sale.
Affiliate marketers can set goals to balance the types of payment they receive and the dates they
are paid by different clients to maintain a steady and growing revenue stream.

Cost and Profitability Goals

Affiliate marketing companies employ a lean business model, often managing all operations
from a home office with the business owner as the sole employee. Setting goals for keeping costs
low can help affiliate marketers leverage this advantage, bringing in increasing amounts of
revenue without increasing overhead or labor costs. Choices like selecting the right Internet
service provider, finding the right website hosts and developing websites on your own can help
you reduce costs and meet your profitability goals.

Traffic Goals

Web traffic can be an affiliate marketer's greatest asset, allowing it to attract top-paying
advertisers rather than soliciting business through cold-calling, email blasts and other time-
consuming business-to-business marketing strategies. Website analytics tools allow affiliate
marketers to track exactly how many visitors come through each website each day, as well as
where each visitor is located. Setting goals for the geographic reach of affiliate websites, as well
as the total traffic coming into different properties on a daily basis, can lead directly to higher
revenue.

Productivity Goals

Sales can be crucial in the early stages of affiliate marketing, and setting daily productivity goals
can help entrepreneurs succeed in picking up their first clients. Bringing in visitors in the early
stages of an affiliate website can be challenging, as well, requiring a bit of diligence on the part
of the marketers. Affiliate marketers can set productivity goals for publishing a certain number
of informative websites each month, writing a certain number of articles or blog posts, pursuing
a certain number of advertising clients each week or any number of productivity-related
objectives.

KPI’S
1: Click Traffic

This is the number of clicks you managed to drive through your program over a certain period of
time. This is one of the basic affiliate marketing KPIs to look at because it’s an important
indicator of how well your program is growing. For example, a higher amount of click traffic
compared to last year suggests that your program is seeing some growth.

Take a more in-depth look at this affiliate marketing KPI to identify which websites, affiliates, or
platforms are sending the most traffic and which ones aren’t. This is an excellent way to narrow
down on the most profitable channels for your program.

2: Top Affiliates

Make it a habit to record your top 10 affiliates who contribute the most revenue to your program
each year. You should nurture your relationships with them so as not to lose your partnerships
with them.
The best way to track this affiliate marketing KPI is by assigning a unique UTM code to each
affiliate. You can use UTM.io to create a UTM template for a specific program. You can then
customize this template to create a unique URL for each affiliate.

This affiliate marketing KPI is very useful and can help you keep track of the affiliates you
should leverage to increase your program revenue.

It can also help you identify any performance drops among affiliates who are usually highly
productive. You might want to look for opportunities to get their performance back on track
again.

3: Number of New Affiliates

Tracking the number of new affiliates you’ve approved can help you understand how much your
program is in demand. Similarly, you should also watch out for any potential affiliates who are
already sending referral traffic and sales to your site but who aren’t official affiliates.

There may already be content producers and publishers creating content about your products and
sending significant referral traffic to your site. Keep an eye on referral traffic and inconsistent
UTM parameters to see if these prospective affiliates drove any expectant sales.

These can be a goldmine for finding new and lucrative affiliate partnerships to go after. They
also give you an idea of how popular your program is among content creators and publishers.

You want to make sure that the program continues to be in high demand. Otherwise, growth will
eventually be stagnant after a while.

There are two main factors that will affect this affiliate marketing KPI – the product you’re
selling and the way you’re promoting the program.

As long as you’re selling a product that adds value to people’s lives and you’re promoting your
affiliate program effectively, you can expect to see growth under this KPI.

4: Percentage of New Customers

Part of tracking your affiliate program performance involves ensuring that the program is still
active. This means you need to look at whether or not the program is still attracting new
customers.
If not, there may be no use in keeping the program running as you could end up wasting time and
resources without gaining any profit.

Some affiliate programs may continue to bring in new customers even after years of activation,
while others may stop attracting a new audience just after a few months.

Keep a close eye on this affiliate marketing KPI to see which programs you should retire and
which ones you should optimize?

5: Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is one of the more obvious affiliate marketing KPIs to track. It is the total
number of conversions divided by the total number of clicks. This gives you a good idea of how
well those clicks are actually converting into sales.

It can also help you understand how many clicks it typically takes to drive a single conversion.

Look for any anomalies in this affiliate marketing KPI especially after a certain occasion. For
instance, you might want to check the change in conversion rate after running a special
promotion to understand how well it resonated with your audience.

6: Average Order Value

Average order value is another one of the essential affiliate marketing KPIs to track if you want
to measure the profitability of your program as well as the profitability of each affiliate.

This is the average amount spent every time customers buy something from you. So a higher
average order value means people are spending more for each purchase.

It’s not enough to just look at affiliate marketing KPIs like the total number of conversions. Even
if your total sales this year isn’t as much as last year’s, you could still be getting more revenue if
you have a higher average order value.

Similarly, an affiliate partner can still be an indispensable source of revenue even if they aren’t
driving a lot of conversions. They may be able to attract more high-value customers i.e.
customers who spend more money on their purchases than the average customer.

7: Gross Orders vs. Net Orders

The difference between your gross orders and net orders is another crucial affiliate marketing
KPI to track. Gross orders refer to the total number of sales generated by your program. Net
orders refer to the number of gross orders minus all the voided orders due to return or
cancellation.

You may be able to identify issues like fraud, logistic failure, lack of quality check, etc. by
keeping a close eye on this number. A high amount of gross orders but significantly lower net
orders could signify that there’s a problem somewhere.

For instance, if you’re seeing a high number of returns due to the same complaint, you should
investigate to see if there’s any basis to this complaint. Otherwise, it could also be a sign of
affiliate fraud in which a partner employs fraudulent means to place a huge amount of orders so
they can earn more commission.

8: Category-Wise Performance

If you’re running a program with different categories of affiliates, it’s crucial to keep track of
how each category is performing. This is one of the main affiliate marketing KPIs that can tell
you what types of customers you’re attracting.

For example, let’s say that coupon sites are contributing to a majority of your program revenue.
This suggests that you are attracting more bottom-of-the funnel customers who already know
about your brand and its products. This is a good sign if your main priority is in driving sales and
conversions.

But if you’re seeing more revenue from content partners, on the other hand, that means that
you’re attracting more top-of-the-funnel customers with your affiliate program. This is a good
sign if your top priority is in brand awareness.

You can adjust your focus toward a certain affiliate category to fit the unique goals of your
business or program.

9: Year-Over-Year Growth

One of the best ways to determine how well your program will last is by tracking its year-over-
year growth. This affiliate marketing KPI paints a realistic picture of your program performance
beyond monthly sales performance.
Since monthly sales performance is bound to see a lot of fluctuations based on seasonality and
industry, this isn’t always the ideal KPI to assess program longevity. For instance, some
industries like gift shops and costume shops may see a lot more sales during the holidays. Other
industries like the swimwear industry may see more sales during the summer.

Instead, you should assess the year-over-year growth of other affiliate marketing KPIs such as
click traffic, net sales, total number of orders, average order value, number of new customers,
etc.

You can use these insights to identify the raw earning potential of your affiliate program. It will
also help you understand whether your program has consistent demand over the years.

Conversion Rate

While an important facet of any healthy marketing strategy, understanding how to track social
media metrics can be challenging.

There are plenty of social media metrics to track, but they don't all translate to a simplistic ROI.
After all, if you notice a drop in sales percentages but your follower base is multiplying, does
that mean your social media ROI is down? One of the best methods to assess that conversion rate
is to divide the way in which you track social media metrics into four groups:

Consume ability
SHAREABILITY

Lead generation

Sales

Consume-ability is a fairly simple idea. It takes a closer look at your postings and content, then
decides how consumable it was for your audience.

How many people in your audience looked at your content? This also applies for your pages,
videos, and downloads.

Share ability is a good way to measure how impactful the content your audience consumed was.
It's the idea that the content or posting was engaging enough to share with others via social
media.

Was it liked and shared? Was it forwarded? Did you get some inbound links thanks to that post?
You actually have a big hand in this one. You can make something easier to share thanks to
built-in sharing buttons.

Lead generation is the next category you need to consider. The point here is whether the content
consumed created a lead you could follow up on. You can track this through email and blog
subscriptions. You can also track this through blog comments that are connected to your social
media posts.

The last metric is the most natural of the group. It defines exactly how much money you made
with the posting or piece of content. You can easily measure that through your e-commerce
system or offline sales activity, but you'll need to create trackable calls to action (CTAs) on each
post to make that happen.

Once you've categorized those metrics, you can begin to set your goals that will help you define
ROI. As with any other goal, though, these need to be written in the Drucker SMART goal
format. That is, they need to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based.

Specific goals lead toward a precise destination. What do you want to achieve?

Measurable means hard numbers. Is 120 shares enough? Are 3 qualified leads over the course of
the week going to spell success?
Attainable goals are realistic ones. You can't expect 5000 new followers in a single day. What’s
attainable for your brand?

Relevant goals are those that actually matter to your company and drive it forward.

Time based means setting goals over period of a month, year, etc.

Once you've created your goals, measuring your ROI becomes a simpler process. Begin by
tracking and measuring each of your goals through tools like Google Analytics and Statusbrew
Reporting. Add some monetary values like average sale and lifetime value. Then calculate your
ROI.

Decide how much you're spending on design, tools, and time involved. Determine whether the
return you're getting is actually worth it to your company. Many used the formula ROI =
(earnings - cost) x 100 / cost.

Average order value

Knowing the average order value offers a window into shopper behaviors and how much they
are spending on your products.

By learning how much your customers are spending on each order, you can then plan pricing and
marketing strategies to improve it.

When you improve your average order value, you directly scale your profits and revenue growth
upward.

“As customer acquisition costs continue to rise and competition becomes fiercer, you need the
higher AOV for your unit economics to continue making sense,” says Armstrong.

Average Order Value, Conversion Rate, and Revenue per Visit

Average order value is often used with conversion rate (CR) and revenue per visit (RPP) to
evaluate performance and act as levers for driving overall revenue growth.

The standard formula for calculating gross revenue is revenue = traffic X conversion rate X
average order value.
Conversion rate (CR)

Your conversion rate is the total number of visitors divided by the number of conversions made
on your website or store.

The higher your conversion rate, the higher the multiplier of your average order value will be for
overall revenue.

Revenue per visit (RPV)

Whereas AOV relates to the value of each order, revenue per visitor refers to the value of each
visitor to your website or store.

You can calculate your revenue per visits by totaling your revenue and dividing by the total
number of visits to your website.

A higher RPV indicates that you are receiving more qualified traffic to your store or website.

AFFILIATE MARKETING

Improved affiliate reporting and attribution

Many affiliate programs run with the last-click assignment, where the affiliate receiving the last
click before the sale receives 100% of the conversion credit. This is going to change. With
affiliate platforms providing new attribution and reporting features, you can see a full-funnel,
cross-channel view of how individual marketing tactics work together.

For example, you could see that the paid social campaign created the first click, Affiliate X
clicked 2, and Affiliate Y clicked the last click. With this full picture, you can structure your
affiliate commissions so that Affiliate X gets a percentage of the sale credit even though they
didn’t get the last click.

Influencer niches are being over-targeted

Over the past, large affiliates have been the mainstay, as catch-all coupons and media platforms
have provided access to hundreds or thousands of advertisers.

It is no longer so much the case. With customers using long-tail keywords and searching for
unique goods and services, influencers can exploit their hyper-focused niche for effective
affiliate marketing. Influencers cannot send massive amounts of traffic to advertisers, but the
audience they send is legitimate, focused, and has higher conversion rates.

GDPR is changing how personal data is collected

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which entered into force on 25 May 2018, is a
set of regulations governing personal data across the EU.

It forces some affiliates to collect user data by opt-in consent (updated privacy policy and cookie
notifications), even though they are not located in the European Union.

The new legislation will also advise you to obey the FTC guidelines and to make it clear that you
are earning partner fees from your recommendations.

Affiliate marketers are getting smarter

Merchants receiving a large percentage of their revenue from the affiliate channel may become
dependent on their affiliate partners.

It may lead affiliate marketers to leverage their important status to receive higher commissions
and better deals with their advertisers.

Whether it’s CPA, CPL, or CPC commission structures, there are many high-paying affiliate
programs and affiliate marketers in the driver’s seat.

Based on these expert insights, we can say that affiliate marketing in 2021 is moving in the
direction of less intrusive practices with an ever-increasing focus on building trust. If Google is
placing more value on users’ intent in its rankings, then that needs to be reflected in affiliate
marketing practices, too. And the best way to build more trust and authority is to form valuable
partnerships, as recommended by the experts. By becoming one of the trusted voices in your
niche, you will be able to drive conversions.

CONCLUSION

The ecommerce growth during the pandemic year is a positive trend for affiliate marketers. And
since ecommerce sales tend to fluctuate according to seasons, you might also want to consider
tapping into current demands as an affiliate. For this, social media is the perfect communication
channel that can effectively complement the evergreen content on your affiliate website. And it’s
where consumers are spending an increasing amount of their time, anyway.

BLOGGING
The latest blog trends are still closely tied to how search engines direct readers to find useful
content. In short, content creators and business bloggers have to develop an editorial plan and
integrate SEO into that plan. Nothing new there except: now, you have plenty of analytics tools
to make data-driven decisions to target and retarget readers, while the internet itself is pummeled
with useless content at best and fake news at worst.

The goal is to optimize content to be both useful and visible with the aid of blog software. Of
course, be honest with your intent as Google and Facebook go into witch-hunting for fake sites.

To make sure you are ahead of the curve when it comes to blogging, we have compiled some of
the key trends in the industry. From the rise of interactive posts to the changing media
consumption preferences of readers, this article should give you an idea of what you should
expect in 2021 and beyond. This way, you can create better content for your readers and take
your site to the next level.

1) improved Content experience

Content is no longer just about text and graphic blocks. These days, bloggers have to be mindful
of the content experience, too. But what is content experience? To illustrate, here is a scenario:
you click a link on an article and are led to a page full of ads and pop-up ads. Rather than getting
straight to the task, you have to close the pop-up ads first. Then, you have to do a lot of scrolling
because there are more ads than content on a page.

That would be a frustrating experience for anybody. This highlights the need for providing an
impeccable content experience as much as great content. After all, it is impossible to use content
to drive ROI if visitors to your website keep leaving after a few seconds.

Of course, it is undeniable that you would need visitors to continue interacting with your
website, especially with the call-to-action buttons. To raise your chances of getting that click,
you can place CTAs strategically over the page while ensuring a smooth content experience.

2) Multimedia and Multi-Platform

Audiences are no longer satisfied with just text articles; they want highly-visual content and even
interactive media to go along with their media consumption. Moreover, the easiest way to do so
is by having different types of content, including promotional ones across different platforms. A
blogger may create videos or vlogs to supplement their articles. They can even make
presentations to make their blog articles more engaging.

An Omni channel approach to content marketing has been adopted by successful businesses. We
expect smaller businesses and individual content creators to do the same in the foreseeable
future.

Content creators are now expanding their content types. Moreover, they do this by crossing
platforms.

This approach enables content creators to expand reach, their content types, and their revenue
channels as well.

3) Data-Driven Blogging

Click worker defines data-driven content as an analytic strategy that uses data obtained from a
customer profile or buyer persona (click worker). Data is gathered from customer profile
information. Then, content marketers use these to create effective campaigns.

Simply put, you create a model of what type of content your target audience needs. Then, you
create content based on these models. Subsequently, after you publish said content, you get
feedback data act accordingly. Crudely, this is what data-driven blogging or content creation
means.

Also, you want to hit the right website KPIs. These are special metrics that tell you that your
blog is doing whatever you want it to do. Therefore, data-driven decision-making is important.
You want to be rational and a bit scientific when pursuing such goals. You don’t want to just go
by feel.

Blogging and Analytics

If you are a business blogger, keep in mind that businesses that blog 20 times per month generate
5x more traffic (HubSpot, 2020) than those that blog fewer than 4x per month. Also, with more
blog posts, you get more data. You get to reverse engineer them and find out what made some
posts successful and others not so successful. Thus, a good analytics platform could help you
make more data-driven decisions.
4) Highly Visual Content

Successful blogs don’t just rely on texts anymore. This is a trend that will likely continue in the
future. Also, there is a good rationale for this sans our allegedly shrinking attention span (BBC).

When creating useful content for readers, you want your content to be as easily digestible as
possible. Thus, augmenting text with beautiful visuals can help get your points across. This tactic
helps readers understand complex topics better. For example, when you write a step-by-step
guide, it’s better to enhance it with pictures like screenshots.

However, highly-visual content does not stop at pictures. You can add videos, interactive media
like polls, or even app-like widgets. One cool example is a widget by Gapminder that gets users
to play with data using different chart types (Gapminder). This is perfect for audiences with
interests in social science and economics.

Experts expect more blogs and websites to create more content like this in the future. These help
you increase dwell time and deliver useful content to your audience. Also, if you create shareable
snippets, audiences are more likely to share them on social media networks. This is arguably one
of the most important blogging trends in today’s internet landscape.

To get a more comprehensive report about visual content, you can check out our list of relevant
visual content marketing statistics.

5) Visual Search

When visual search capabilities came, many found it to be quite neat. You just point your camera
at a thing. Then, you’d get search results about it, be it a product or some type of new plant that
you don’t know anything about.

Moreover, Millennials from the UK and the US are now used to having visual searches as a part
of the digital shopping experience (Yoast, 2019). In fact, around 62% of them are comfortable
with searching via image. Furthermore, around 58% are receptive to shoppable content like click
to purchase. This goes for images, videos, blogs, and user-generated social media content.

What does this mean for your blog? Well, if you can optimize your site for visual search, you can
directly sell within your articles. This is great news for business bloggers and performance
partners (affiliate marketers).
6) Voice Search

Thanks to the rise of smart speakers, many people are now surfing the web using voice
commands. According to recent voice search data, smart speaker shipment is doing well
globally, with shipment poised to reach 409.4 million in 2025 (Loup Ventures, 2019). Thus, you
should optimize your blog for voice search so search engines can easily connect you to your
target audiences.

The bottom line here is SEO. You won’t get new people to your site if your site is not optimized
for search engines to process (well, mostly Google). Of course, using a cloud-based and on
premise search marketing platform can help you with it. However, you must consider voice
search is a relatively new trend. Also, its technology is quite new and still developing as well.

Short Question/ Answers

Question 1: What are some common features of blogging?

Answer:  Blogs tend to have following few things in common:

 A main content area with articles listed chronologically, newest on top. Often, the articles
are organized into categories. An archive of older articles.
 A way for people to leave comments about the articles.
 A list of links to other related sites, sometimes called a “blogroll”.
 One or more “feeds” like RSS, Atom or RDF files.

Question 2: How to choose between Blogger vs WordPress

Answer: Both Blogger and WordPress have their place, and are useful for certain types of users.
Following points should be consider while making a decision:

 Blogger is useful for those who want to create their blog and have it fully up and running
immediately. If all you want is a very simple hobby blogging platform, this may be the
solution for you. You will not have to pay a cent to get started, and you will not need to
worry about hosting or any other technical considerations.
 However, it is worth noting how restrictive Blogger is. Again, you have limited options for
customizing your blog. In addition, you will not be able to do much else with the platform. If
you want your blog to be a part of a larger website – such as a business site, a portfolio, or a
store – Blogger will not provide the features you will need.
 Therefore, when it comes to Blogger vs WordPress, we recommend the latter for most people
who are creating a new blog. The start-up costs are very small, the setup is fast, and it is
designed to be beginner-friendly. You should have your blog up and running in less than an
hour and the learning curve when it comes to creating and publishing posts is quick.
 Ultimately, even if all you want to do right now is build a very basic blog, WordPress is
usually the better option. This way, if in the future you want to expand your website, add new
features to it, or even change its focus entirely, you’ll have all the options you need right at
your fingertips.

Question 3: What are some different payment terms that used in affiliated programs?

Answer: Different affiliate programs can use different payment terms such as:

 Pay per Sale: In this program, a merchant pays you a percentage of the sale price when the
purchase is completed.
 Pay per Click: In this program, you are paid based on the number of visitors you redirect to
the Merchant’s website from your affiliate site, whether or not a sale is made.
 Pay per Lead: You are paid once the referred visitors provide their contact information on the
target site by filling out a simple contact form.

Question 4: What are some of the advantages to become and affiliate marketer?

Answer: Affiliate marketing is considered one of the world’s fastest growing and best internet
marketing techniques to earn money online because of:

 Cost effective: Marketing on the internet is cheap and you do not have to worry about the
production cost as the seller already develops the product. You do not need a physical
business location or hire employees either.
 Global Market: Online marketing gives you the opportunity to reach people all over the
world easily.
 No Fees: You do not need to pay anything to join affiliate programs.
 No Storage No Shipping: You do not need to worry about storage, packing or shipment of
the product. They are all taken care of by the seller.
 No customer support: You do not need to provide any customer support or deal with
consumer complaints as the Seller does that for you.
 Passive income: A regular job can give you a fixed income as long as you continue to work.
Depending on your marketing skill Affiliate, marketing can create a steady flow of income
even when you are not in front of your computer.
 Work from home: If you make enough money then you do not have to worry about going to
work at the same time every day or getting stuck in traffic. You can work in the comfort of
your own home.

Question 5: How do I find an affiliate link for any product?

Answer: Not all companies offer an affiliate program, of course, but for those that do offer
affiliate programs, you can check their website for related information. When searching, be sure
to check the company’s FAQ page if they have one.

Another way find this information is to do a simple Google search. For example, one could place
the following phrase into Google Search: “(product name) + affiliate program”. (Replace
“product name” with the name of the product you are promoting.)

This should bring you to a landing page. Many companies use an affiliate marketplace like ShareASale,
CJ, or Clickbank. These are free to use and you can create a free account.

Question 6: Is it important to have a blog for affiliate promotion?

Answer: Not necessarily, but a blog is really the best promotional tool. With that said, you can
always use methods such as PPC or advertising to promote a product. This is more like hit-and-
run affiliate marketing, however. The best way to make the most out of your affiliate marketing
opportunities is to have a blog and use it for hard and soft promotion.

Question 7: Why Companies Set KPIs in Affiliate Marketing

Answer: A company sets their KPIs for their affiliate program depends on a variety of factors,
including revenue and/or click traffic penetration to overall e-commerce goals, average order
value, new customer acquisition, return on ad spend (ROAS) or investment (ROI), etc. Ultimately, it
tends to be in the effort to hit an overall e-commerce or site wide goal with affiliate being a key
component of the channel mix)

Question 8: When to use email series to start affiliate marketing?

Answer: This is probably the most effective (and most advanced) method about for making
affiliate sales: your email list.

If you are getting to the point where you have a sizable list, you could create a series of emails to
promote a product. This works best if it is an information product with relatively high
commissions. Nevertheless, do not start going this direction until you have had some experience
with either email marketing or the other affiliate strategies for this to work well you should have
the following:

 A list of at least 1,000 people

 A product you’ve either used and had success with, or have a very good story/reason for
promoting
 A product that converts well (talk to the creator about this).

Question 9: How to Start Affiliate Marketing on Your Blog in eight Steps

Answer:

Step 1: Create a Website or a Blog

Step 2: Choose an Industry, and then Niche Down

Step 3: Research Products in Your Niche that You Can Review

Step 4: Sign Up for the Amazon Affiliate Program

Step 5: Find affiliate programs for the other products you want to review
Step 6: Create content in the form of tutorials, review posts, resource pages or emails and use
your affiliate link

Step 7: Optimize the page and track your rankings in Google

Step 8: Rinse and Repeat!

Question 10: Write types of affiliate products that you can promote?

Answer: It is time to decide which of those the best fit are for you and your audience. Following
are three different types of affiliate products you can promote:

1. Physical Products
2. Information Products
3. Services

Question 11: State the reasons that why informative products are so great to promote:

Answer: There are many reasons that information products are so great to promote:

 Often they are higher priced, which means higher commissions

 They can have a personality behind them, which builds trust and makes them easier to sell
 There are often full marketing funnels behind them aiding in sales
 They solve a problem or provide a solution that your readers are looking for

Generally, it can be a little bit more work to become an affiliate for these products because often
the creator is a bit more protective of who they let market the products.

There is also no central place you can go to join as you could with Amazon. Usually, you will
need to talk to the author directly or look for an “affiliates” page on their product site.
Long Question/ Answers
Question 1: Explain affiliate marketing in detail with its structure?

Answer:

Affiliate Marketing:

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or

more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts.

Structure

The industry has four core players:

1. the merchant (also known as 'advertiser' or 'retailer' or 'brand')

2. the network (that contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the
payments)
3. the publisher (also known as 'the affiliate')
4. the customer

Explanation:

The market has grown in complexity, resulting in the emergence of a secondary tier of players,
including affiliate management agencies, super-affiliates, and specialized third party vendors.

Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods to some degree because

affiliates often use regular advertising methods. Those methods include organic search engine
optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing (PPC – Pay Per Click), e-mail marketing, content
marketing, and (in some sense) display advertising. On the other hand, affiliates sometimes use less
orthodox techniques, such as publishing reviews of products or services offered by a partner.

Affiliate marketing is commonly confused with referral marketing, as both forms of marketing use
third parties to drive sales to the retailer. The two forms of marketing are differentiated, however,
in how they drive sales, where affiliate marketing relies purely on financial motivations,
while referral marketing relies more on trust and personal relationships.
Advertisers frequently overlook Affiliate marketing. While search engines, e-mail, and web site
syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, affiliate marketing carries a much
lower profile. , affiliates continue to play a significant role in e-retailers' marketing strategies.

The benefit of affiliate marketing is the fact that advertisers can collaborate with hundreds of
partners, the affiliates, without engaging in direct communication with them. Therefore, the
advertisers can increase their market position without a need to conduct time-consuming
processes of recurring approvals and relationship building with partners. Affiliative system
operator perform these tasks, establishes contact with the advertisers and with the partners, and
enables advertisers to benefit from the advertising capacity of partners from all around the world.
From advertisers' perspective, operator provides advertising services and not by each partner
engaged within the affiliation system.

Analogically, the affiliates (partners) are able to provide advertising services without any
interaction with advertisers since the affiliate panel gives partner’s access to all the necessary
information needed to run an advertising campaign. Such information includes, for example,
advertising materials for each advertised product and service category, geolocation data for
individual advertising campaigns for each advertised product and service category that further
advertised in accordance with its geolocation. Additionally, the affiliate panel includes
information about rates per lead generated in a campaign per geolocation. From the perspective
of the partners, their services rendered to the operator and not the advertisers.

Question 2: What are the types of affiliate websites?

Answer: merchants (advertisers) and affiliate networks often categorize Affiliate websites.
There are currently no industry-wide standards for the categorization. The following types of websites
are generic, yet are commonly understood and used by affiliate marketers.

Search affiliates that utilize pay per click search engines to promote the advertisers' offers (i.e.,
search arbitrage)

Price comparison service websites and directories

Loyalty websites, typically characterized by providing a reward or incentive system for purchases via
points, miles, cash back

Cause Related Marketing sites that offer charitable donations

Coupon and rebate websites that focus on sales promotions

Content and niche market websites, including product review sites

Personal websites

Weblogs and websites syndication feeds

E-mail marketing list affiliates (i.e., owners of large opt-in -mail lists that typically employ e-mail drip
marketing) and newsletter list affiliates, which are typically more content-heavy

Registration path or co-registration affiliates who include offers from other merchants during the
registration process on their own website

Shopping directories that list merchants by categories without providing coupons, price comparisons, or

other features based on information that changes frequently, thus requiring continual updates

Cost per action networks (i.e., top-tier affiliates) that expose offers from the advertiser with which they
are affiliated with their own network of affiliates

Websites using adbars (e.g. AdSense) to display context-sensitive advertising for products on the site

Virtual currency that offers advertising views in exchange for a handout of virtual currency in a game or
other virtual platform.

File Sharing: Web sites that host directories of music, movies, games and other software. Users upload
content to file-hosting sites and then post descriptions of the material and their download links on
directory sites. Uploaders are paid by the file-hosting sites based on the number of times their files are
downloaded. The file-hosting sites sell premium download access to the files to the public. The websites
that host the directory services sell advertising and do not host the files themselves.

Video sharing websites: YouTube videos are often utilized by affiliates to do affiliate marketing. A

person would create a video and place a link to the affiliate product they are promoting in the video itself
and within the description.

Question 3: Explain briefly related issues that affiliated marketers and bloggers faced?
Answer: Since the emergence of affiliate marketing, there has been little control over affiliate activity.
Unscrupulous affiliates have used spam, false advertising, forced clicks (to get tracking cookies set on
users' computers), adware, and other methods to drive traffic to their sponsors. Although many affiliate
programs have terms of service that contain rules against spam, this marketing method has historically
proven to attract abuse from spammers.

E-mail spam:

In the infancy of affiliate marketing, many Internet users held negative opinions due to the
tendency of affiliates to use spam to promote the programs in which they were enrolled. As
affiliate marketing matured, many affiliate merchants have refined their terms and conditions to
prohibit affiliates from spamming.

Malicious browser extensions:

A browser extension is a plug-in that extends the functionality of a web browser. Some extensions
are authored using web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Most modern web
browsers have a whole slew of third-party extensions available for download. In recent years,
there has been a constant rise in the number of malicious browser extensions flooding the web.
Malicious browser extensions will often appear to be legitimate, as they seem to originate from
vendor websites and come with glowing customer reviews. In the case of affiliate marketing,
these malicious extensions are often used to redirect a user's browser to send fake clicks to
websites that are supposedly part of legitimate affiliate marketing programs. Typically, users are
completely unaware this is happening other than their browser performance slowing down.
Websites end up paying for fake traffic numbers, and users are unwitting participants in these ad
schemes.

Search engine spam:

As search engines have become more prominent, some affiliate marketers have shifted from
sending e-mail spam to creating automatically generated web pages that often contain
product data feeds provided by merchants. The goal of such web pages is to manipulate the
relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine, also known as spamdexing.
Each page can be targeted to a different niche market with specific keywords, with the result
being a skewed form of search engine optimization.
Spam is the biggest threat to organic search engines, whose goal is to provide quality search
results for keywords or phrases entered by their users. Google's PageRank algorithm update
("BigDaddy") in February 2006—the final stage of Google's major update ("Jagger") that began
in mid-summer 2005—specifically targeted spamdexing with great success. This update thus
enabled Google to remove a large amount of mostly computer-generated duplicate content from
its index.

Websites consisting mostly of affiliate links have previously held a negative reputation for under
delivering quality content. In 2005 there were active changes made by Google, where certain
websites were labeled as "thin affiliates". Such websites were either removed from Google's
index or were relocated within the results page (i.e., moved from the top-most results to a lower
position). To avoid this categorization, affiliate marketer webmasters must create quality content
on their websites that distinguishes their work from the work of spammers or banner farms,
which only contain links leading to merchant sites.

Adware:

Although it differs from spyware, adware often uses the same methods and technologies.

Merchants initially were uninformed about adware, what impact it had, and how it could damage
their brands. Affiliate marketers became aware of the issue much more quickly, especially
because they noticed that adware often overwrites tracking cookies, thus resulting in a decline of
commissions. Affiliates not employing adware felt that it was stealing commission from them.
Adware often has no valuable purpose and rarely provides any useful content to the user, who is
typically unaware that such software is installed on his/her computer.

Affiliates discussed the issues in Internet forums and began to organize their efforts. They
believed that the best way to address the problem was to discourage merchants from advertising
via adware. Merchants that were either indifferent to or supportive of adware were exposed by
affiliates, thus damaging those merchants' reputations and tarnishing their affiliate marketing
efforts. Many affiliates either terminated the use of such merchants or switched to a competitor's
affiliate program. Eventually, merchants and affiliates to take a stand and ban certain adware
publishers from their network also forced affiliate networks. The result was Code of
Conduct by Commission Junction/be Free and Performics, Link Share’s Anti-Predatory
Advertising Addendum, and ShareASale's complete ban of software applications as a medium for
affiliates to promote advertiser offers. Regardless of the progress made, adware continues to be
an issue, as demonstrated by the class action lawsuit against ValueClick and its daughter company
Commission Junction filed on April 20, 2007.

Trademark bidding:

Affiliates were among the earliest adopters of pay per click advertising when the first pay-per-click
search engines emerged during the end of the 1990s. Later in 2000, Google launched its pay per click
service, Google AdWords, which is responsible for the widespread use and acceptance of pay per click as
an advertising channel. An increasing number of merchants engaged in pay per click advertising, either
directly or via a search-marketing agency, and realized that this space was already occupied by their
affiliates. Although this situation alone created advertising channel conflicts and debates between
advertisers and affiliates, the largest issue concerned affiliates bidding on advertiser’s names, brands, and
trademarks. Several advertisers began to adjust their affiliate program terms to prohibit their affiliates
from bidding on those type of keywords. Some advertisers, however, did and still do embrace
this behavior, going so far as to allow, or even encourage, affiliates to bid on any term, including
the advertiser's trademarks.

Question 4: What are some requirements of blogging?

Answer: Starting a blog or adding a blog to your existing site is relativity easy and affordable by
following given four steps:

Requirements for a blog:

 Set Up the Blog

There are free blog options such as WordPress and Blogger, but to retain control and a
professional image, consider investing in a domain name and a hosting service. You can
install WordPress or another content management system on your host if you do not want to create
the whole site from scratch.

 Add Content
Once your blog is up and running, you need to keep it active with new content to grow your business.
Develop a set schedule for writing and posting blog articles. Create a content calendar so you always
know what you are going to post.

 Market

Like all other business ideas, your success comes from marketing and getting your message in front of
your target market. Great ways to reach your market are through social media apps, email lists, and by
reaching out to other bloggers, podcasters, and media outlets for publicity. Repurpose your blog
content to promote your business across platforms, such as by using quotes on your Twitter or Instagram
profiles, or by creating a video of your article to share on YouTube.

 Add Income Streams

While your blog can complement an existing business, it is also a great way to add additional
income streams to your home business. You can promote other companies' products and services
in affiliate marketing. You can advertise or feed ad networks, such as AdSense, on to your blog. If
you have a service business you are promoting with your blog, you can create your
own information products to complement it. Alternatively, if you have your own product, you can
offer a service.

Question 5: How can one become a successful affiliate marketer?

Answer: Affiliate marketing is definitely an excellent way to make money online but it is highly
competitive too. In order to be successful in Affiliate marketing you need to know the market
needs, learn how to promote products, what works and what does not. The following are a few
tricks on becoming successful in affiliate marketing that I have learnt over time.

a) Only Choose a Handful of Good Products

The first mistake many affiliate marketers make is that they register with too many different
affiliate programs and try to promote everything. Pursuing affiliate marketing down this path can
become very overwhelming and you will not be able to promote any product properly. All you
need in order to be successful is a handful of good products to promote. Try to understand the
market needs and look for products that align correctly with the topic of your site.
b) Use Several Traffic Sources to Promote Products

Most affiliate marketers put up the ads only on their sites. There is nothing wrong with this
approach but know that there are many other traffic sources that you can tap into and promote
the products simultaneously. The more targeted traffic you can send to the sales page the more
your chances are of making money.

Google AdWords can be used to drive targeted traffic to a sales page. You simply make an ad in
your AdWords account then use your affiliate link in the target page URL of the ad. Obviously,
you will have to continuously measure the conversions and see if the campaign cost is less than
the campaign profit in order to keep the campaign running but I am sure you get the idea.

c) Test, Measure and Track Your Affiliate Campaign

It is a very good idea to use different product promotion strategies so you can figure out what is
working and what is not. Try to do split testing and measure the performance of each campaign
then take actions accordingly. Changing a few things here and there can increase your profit
dramatically. Make sure to place the banner ads on different areas of your site’s pages. Some
positions will make the ads more noticeable than others will.

Most affiliate programs will give you basic stats that you may need but there is nothing stopping
you from using your own conversion tracking software too. There are many conversions tracking
software out there that you can use to track your affiliate campaign.

d) Research the Demand of the Product

If you try to sell a product that is in low demand then chances are that you are not going to get
many sales no matter how hard you try. Therefore, it is a good idea to spend a bit of time
researching and finding out if a product that you are thinking of promoting is a product that your
audience needs. If your site gets decent traffic then you can conduct an online survey and easily
get input from your visitors.

e) Stay Current with New Methods and Techniques

Affiliate marketing is a very competitive field and people are always coming up with new
techniques. Try to stay current with these new techniques and market trends otherwise, you will
fall behind.
f) Choose the Right Merchant

When you promote a product, you also promote the person or the company who is behind the
product so try to choose wisely. You do not want your visitors to go and buy a product following
your advice then come back unhappy. Do you think that this visitor will come back to your site
and take your advice again? Most likely, no, this can hurt your credibility in the long run.
Usually, websites/company that offer good customer service will have better customer
satisfaction so try to stick with promoting their products.

g) Use Helpful Tools

If you are serious about affiliate marketing then try to find tools that will help you be more
efficient. There are many helpful tools out there. If you are using a WordPress powered site then
consider getting a plugin similar to the Affiliate Link Manager.

Do not just hope and pray that visitors will buy; setup everything correctly and make it happen!
If you think that visitors will click on your affiliate links and buy just because you placed dozens
of affiliate links on your website then you are wrong! You need to have a structured plan in
place. Affiliate marketing is a business so you will have a much better chance of succeeding if
you treat it like one.

Question 6: What are some similarities between affiliate marketing and blogging? State
pros and cons of both.

Answer: Blogging and affiliate marketing may seem like two sides of the same coin. However,
the fact is they use different types of models to generate income.

Similarities

Let us start with some basic similarities between blogging and affiliate marketing.

 Both work through the internet.

 Both have high income generating potential.
 Starting a blog or an affiliate marketing campaign is easy.
 The skill set required to work on them are mostly the same (e.g.: creating ads, driving traffic,
internet-marketing skills).
 They require little to no investment.

Blogging

Blogging is one of the most interesting ways to make money. When you write a blog on a
particular topic, ultimately you are taking one-step towards engaging with your clients.

Most brands look for the number of readers and followers’ that bloggers have on their social
media websites before offering them affiliate positions. They also check the target audience.

Benefits and drawbacks

Blogging essentially means to write on a topic that you are interested in. The advantages to the
blogger include:

 Improving the knowledge of the topic that they write on.

 Different ways of making money through the same blog.
 No taking orders from others. You are the boss of your own blog.

However, there are some disadvantages as well. Some of these are:

 Very time consuming to work every day. At least 2 hours a day to manage and keep your
blog updated.
 You have to be patient when it comes to earning money. Takes time to get brands onboard.
 It is very difficult for beginners to gain high blog traffic due to the cutthroat competition.
 Once you have selected a topic, you have to stick to it. You cannot change the topic.
 Maintaining and managing numerous blogs is very hard and takes a lot more time.

Affiliate Marketing

In comparison to blogging, affiliate marketing moves the risk from the brands towards the
bloggers. It is a pay per-click basis marketing method. Many bloggers earn as high as six figures
when it comes to affiliate programs. However, they will not be paid if their work does not
translate into sales.

Pros and Cons

Affiliate marketing is all about the promotion of the product for money. Its advantages include:

 No special skills are required (except basic computer skills).

 You can start earning money as soon as you start.
 It is easier to choose from any kind of niche that is in demand on the market.
 Potential to earning money is higher than blogging.
 Managing and promoting numerous affiliate programs is quite easy.
 You have to spend only a minimum time of 30 minutes per day. That is very less time as
compared to blogging.

However, there are some drawbacks as well. These include:

 Increasing expenses to pay for the traffic.

 Managing campaigns inefficiently results into you losing all your money. This could also
happen if your product loses its demand.
 Google keeps changing their search engine algorithms; if you do not stay updated, you lose
the clients and your income.
