Enhancing bearing capacity of fiber reinforced clayey

CHAPTER 4
PROBLEMS

4.1 General
Based on literature review of fiber reinforced clayey soil, to found the problems
related to clayey soil we are visited the different sites and found the problems from
contractors and designer to construct the foundation on clayey soil. They are facing
the problems due to low density, high plasticity, high swelling properties and low
shear strength of soil.

Foundation design on clayey soil is difficult for designer. They recommend the
proper soil treatments below foundations. Here one sample of foundation treatment
is given.

4.1.1 Soil Treatment

For laying Open foundation, it is recommended to conduct soil stabilization.
The soil is of swelling characteristic beneath 3.0m depth and hence following
treatment is suggested. Footing shall be rested over hard base as follows:
1. 200mm thick layer of Rubble filled with sand filler.
2. 100mm thick Lean Concrete of (1: 5: 10).
3. 100mm thick P.C.C. (1 : 3 : 6)

Above soil treatments are takes extra cost of project, Soil replacement is also
suggested by the designer. But soil replacement requires the resource of soil having
required properties. For all sites the resource of soil not available or costly.
Now a days the fiber reinforced soil used to increase the soil properties of clayey
soil & save the cost of soil compare with the cost of soil replacement. It is difficult
to mix the fiber in soil at site but now mixing equipments are available at site. So, in
future this technique will become more popular than soil replacement and costly soil
treatments
