Film Analysis on “The Danish Girl”

The main character of the film is Einar Wegener, who is also Lili Elbe. Einar was 48
years old. He is first introduced as a man, but as when he names himself Lili, his gender is a
woman, so basically the main character has two genders. The act of acting as a female figure
exposes the gender identity of Einar as a woman, who calls herself Lili Elbe, for life. This sets
off a cycle of putting behind the persona of Einar, which she has sought to preserve all her life,
first reluctant and then irreversible. Evidently, Einar has a gender dysphoria, also known as
gender identity disorder because Einar experiences distress from a notable incongruence between
the ender which he personally identifies and the gender which he was born. Based on the theories
that are discussed in the class, I think what happened to the main character was Cognitive
development because Einar was pressured and encouraged by Gerda to be a woman and that’s
what triggered Einar to becoming Lili. I am not in favor of gender reassignment since the main
character undergone a laborious and punishing process of gender reassignment only to find
himself dead in the end. It inspired me how the film manifested the sense of unconditional love.
Gerda still loved his husband despite of all his privation and still stayed by his side until the end.
Lili also set an example on loving your finding knowing your self first because she knew that she
was hurting others. Lastly the ending depicted a good example of what true is like, before Lili
died, she is truly herself and that is what she wanted which makes Gerda free because she only
wants Lili to be happy too.
