The origins of the city date back to pre-Inca times, with the development of the first
human settlements around the Quilcay and Santa rivers; its Spanish foundation took place
in 1574 as a reduction of Indians. During the independence of Peru, the city welcomed
and supplied the liberating army with military equipment and materials, thus earning the
emblematic appellation of "The very noble and generous city of Huaraz" given by the
liberator Simón Bolívar. In 1970, 95% of the city was destroyed by the earthquake that
devastated the Ancash region in which approximately 20,000 inhabitants of Huaraz died.
For this reason and due to the deployment of international collaboration for the relief of
the victims, it received the name of Capital of International Friendship.
The economic activity in Huaraz is based on agriculture, commerce and tourism, with a
strong presence of the latter because it concentrates the highest percentage of tourism
infrastructure in the Ancash highlands, being the arrival point for adventure sports and
high mountain sports in the snowy mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, as well as tours to
the archaeological site of Chavin de Huantar and the entire Eastern Highlands of Ancash.
