Questions of Emerging Business Ethics issues

(Chapter 3)
1. Describe the ethical issues that David is encountering.

Answer: Daniel has read apost on Facebook that Ms. Gloria Kunies, the
celebrity spokesperson is a vegetarian even though she is meant to endorse
Bacon, a meat product. Daniel is awere that it would be dishonet of him to write
this advertisement knowing that Ms. Kunies is lying. Daniels’s boss, Chloe, has
put a lot of trust I him to the extent of letting him run such an account on his
own even though he is a new employee. This is because Daniel has proven
himself to be a capable copywrite. Daniel wishes to please his boss by producing
exemplary work as a reward for her faith in him. He is faced with a dilemma of
whether he should mask the contradiction of the advertisement using humor of if
he should decline this job given that he is awere of Ms. Kunies’ lies.

2. Does this situation in any way violate the concepts of fairness, honesty, and
integrity?

Answer: the situations that Daniel is faced with violetes the concepts of
honestly, integrity nd fairness since Ms. Kunies has identified herself as a
vegetarian on Facebook while she seeks to promote Bacon. Chloe advises Daniel
that it is okay to add a spin to the massage while advertising but doing so would
amount to being dishonest on the part of Daniel. Moreover, lying to cunsumes
Bacon while claiming to be a vegetarian in an indcation of lack of integrity.

3. If the advertisement does not violate any laws, then why should Daniel be
concerned? What are the possible consequences of the advertisement?

Answer: The first principle of the American Advertising Federation states that
adverising agencies should uphold high ethical standars and be truthful in
serving the public (American Advertising Fedeation 3). Therefore, running such
a contradictory advertisement where the celebrity spokesperson is a vegetarian
but promotes bacon could get the advertising agency in trouble with the AAF as
it violates one of their basic principles. Moreover, Daniel is awere of the fact
that Ms. Kunies is a vegetarian and has confided in his boss on the same.
Possible consequences of the advertisement is could spark angry reactions from
consumers because of the facebook post by Ms. Kunies about her being a
vegetarian, which is in the public domain. This could lead to the intervention by
the AAF on the matter and in case the agency and its employee are found to
have violated any laws, they could be prosecuted.
