the day was 14, the month of august ,the year was 1945, the place was new york and the end
of word war II was confirmed, everyone went to times square to celebrate and that was when
one of the most iconic photos has been taken in the history.A photograph taken by Alfred
Eisenstaedt which shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a nurse on Times Square has become a one
of the most iconic and famous images of the century.Due to all the emotions and celebrations
of the moment, Eisenstaedt did not have the opportunity to obtain the name and details, and
the identity of the man and woman, and that was a great mystery for some time. Until, due to
the advancement of technology, it was possible to discover that the man in the photo was
George Mendonsa, a US sailor

George Mendonsa said that he was at home when he heard people saying that the war was
over and then he went to the streets to celebrate, it was there that he saw the nurse, later
identified as Greta Zimmer Friedman. He said that she reminded him of nurses on a hospital."I
had quite a few drinks that day and I considered her one of the troops—she was a nurse,"
George Mendonsa explained.

Since the photo was taken in 1945, it was a long time before they discovered, in fact, who was
a woman in white being kissed warmly by the sailor. Initially, Edith Shain had been identified as
the woman in the image. As the author of the photograph did not write down the duo's name,
it was difficult to determine who the mysterious woman was. However, in 2012, the authors of
The Kissing Sailor used research with forensic anthropologists to come to the conclusion that
the nurse girl was Greta Zimmer Friedman.
