The Medieval Period

The medieval period in Indian history began roughly around the 8th century
CE. (After the fall of the Gupta Empire) till the 18th century CE.

Aryavarta Bharatvarsha

Aryavarta: Land of Aryans.

Bharatvarsha: In the Puranas.

India & Bharat: The name India comes from the word Indus which
originates from the Persian word Sindhi. The words India and Bharat were
used constantly in the place of each other.
Hindustan: The word Hindustan was used to refer to the entire Indian
subcontinent or the north and northwestern regions.

- Minhaj-i-Siraj (a Persian Historian) used the term Hindustan to refer


to the areas of Panjab, Haryana and the lands between the rivers Ganga
and Yamuna.
- When Mughals used the word Hindustan they used it to refer to
geography of a place.
- Subsequent rulers used the word Hindustan to refer to their respected
realms.
- When Amir Khusrau used the word Hind it was used to refer to the
geographical and cultural aspect and it did not cause any political or
national meaning of it.
