ACTIVITY NO.

Solve the following problem.

Problem 1.

A cast in place concrete pile sides 0.4m is to be driven 12m into the soil strata. The first layer 4m has a
unit weight of 18kN/m3 and C =80 kPa. Below the first layer is a 6m thick soil having a unit weight of 18.5
kN/m3 and C =85 kPa. Last layer of the soil has a unit weight of 19kN/m3, C =90 kPa and OCR equal to 4.
Determine the frictional resistance of the pile assuming  = 0.264. Also calculate the allowable capacity
for a factor of safety of 3. Then, due to changes in design requirements, the pile must support 20% more
load. So determine the additional embedment depth required. Assume ground water table located 4m
below ground surface.

Problem 2.

A drilled shaft without a bell is 10 m long. It has a diameter of 1m. Es = 30000 kPa and poissons ratio =
0.25. Using factor of safety equal to 3, compute the working load capacity. Also, compute the settlement
of the pile caused by the load at the pile tip assuming Iwp = 0.85. Last, calculate the settlement of the
pile caused by the load transmitted along the pile shaft with Iws = 3.15. The top 4m ( = 0.50) has a
cohesion of 20 kPa and the rest ( = 0.60) has a cohesion of 40 kPa.

Problem 3.

A group of 0.30m diameter precast concrete piles is

to be driven to a depth of 42m below the water
level for support of wharf structure. The piles are to
be spaced approximately 2.4m apart in the soil
profile shown. Use a factor of safety equal to 3.  =
0.28 for frictional resistance Compute
for the group capacity of pile.

sat = 15.1 kN/m3

C = 38kPa

sat = 16.1 kN/m3

C = 48kPa
