LEMON GRASS

Cymbopogon citratus also known as Lemon grass is a widely used herb in


tropical countries, especially in Southeast Asia. The essential oil of the plant is
used in aromatherapy. The compounds identified in Cymbopogon citratus are
mainly terpenes, alcohols, ketones, aldehyde and esters.

Common names:Ilocano: baraniw (ba-ra-niw) Tagalog: tanglad (tang-lad)


English: lemongrass Bisaya:( Tanglad)
Indication:The leaves and the oil are used to make medicine. Lemongrass is
used for treating digestive tract spasms, stomachache, high blood pressure,
convulsions, pain, vomiting, cough, achy joints (rheumatism), fever, the
common cold, and exhaustion. It is also used to kill germs and as a mild
astringent.
Found in: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a tall, perennial grass in a
class of about 45 species of grasses native to the tropical and sub-tropical
climates of Asia, Australia and Africa.
Parts used: Oil, oleoresin, leaf, spent grass
Special precaution: Lemongrass is LIKELY SAFE for most people when used
in food amounts. It is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth, applied to the
skin, or inhaled as aromatherapy short-term for medicinal purposes. Rarely,
lemongrass oil might cause a rash of skin irritation when applied to the skin.
Preparation:
Lemongrass oil helps relieve pain in muscles, joints, toothache and headache
etc. resulting from viral infections like cough and cold, influenza, fever, pox etc.
Decoction: Fresh or dried lemongrass can be steeped or boiled to make an
herbal infusion or decoction. You can chop the fresh leaves or simply break up
dried leaves. Generally speaking, about one teaspoon of lemongrass leaves
per cup of boiling water is a good ratio. Lemongrass is also an ingredient in
many herbal tea blends.
