Introduction of A. T. Haque Limited:

A. T. Haque is one of the largest and oldest biscuit, chips, and confectionary, soap
and battery manufacturers in Bangladesh since 1947. Started its business as a
distributor of famous British biscuit giant Huntley & Palmers and battery giant Union
Carbide. Haque has now 600+ widespread distribution network all over the country. It
is basically a FMCG company. FMCG means fast moving consumer goods.

FMCG Industry Review of Bangladesh: Consumer goods refer to the final goods and
services that are consumed by the households and not used in the production process
of other goods & services. Consumption of these goods and services is defined as the
Private Consumption or Household Consumption. On the other hand, Fast Moving
Consumer Goods (FMCG) are products that are sold rapidly and at comparatively
lower cost. Examples of such FMCGs are packaged foods, beverages, toiletries, over
the counter drugs and similar consumables. Usually, FMCGs have a short shelf life.
Some FMCGs are highly perishable such as meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy products
and baked goods. Others products like toiletries, packaged foods, soft drinks,
housework products have high turnover rates. Revenue margin from the FMCGs is
comparatively small, these products are generally sold in bulk quantities to make
considerable aggregate earnings. The business of FMCGs is considered as the most
definitive instance of low margin and high-volume business.

Major Classifications of FMCG Industry in Bangladesh in Bangladesh: The FMCG

industry can be classified in three major categories- Foods and Beverage, Personal
Care and Household Care Industries. Foods and Beverage Industry includes all food
products such as milk & dairy products, biscuits and bakery products, frozen foods,
ice cream, tea, coffee, baby foods, soft drinks, tobacco and others. On the other hand,
Personal Care industry includes the products which are used for personal care like
perfume, cosmetics, toiletries products and other related products. Household
products include the products which are useful to maintain the house like cleaning and

Learning Experience:
Through the journey of my internship I have learned a lot of important lessons
& gained knowledge about different professional etiquettes. The experience
teaches me how to maintain professional relationship with colleagues. It
teaches me how the corporate world is & how to deal with it. I have learned
that how to handle the work pressure in different situation. My some of the
most important learning experiences are given below:
 By shortlisting the candidates for interview according to the
company’s criteria, I have learned that how to evaluate the CVs &
what important things should be included in a cv. It develops my
analytical skill & also help me to get a better career.
 I had to work in excel every single day & each & every work was
related to excel so, from enlisting the mobile number to enlisting the
insurance information of the vehicles & many more, the works helps
me to improve my computer proficiency, & I have to thank my
supervisors for teaching me & providing me knowledge.
 By preparing their whole organogram I have gained knowledge about
their different departments & also learned about the hierarchy system
of corporate world.
 Assisting my supervisors for developing the “Kormee” software I have
gained vast knowledge about HR software & developed my skill for a
HR software. It will help me for my better career in HR.
 Handling the leave form of the employees was also a great experience
for me. It helps me to gain experience & knowledge about the personal
file of individual employees, how a corporate personal file of an
employee looks & what are the important things included in a personal
file. As it is a very important task of a HR this experience was very
crucial for me.
 Enlisting the visiting card information seems also beneficial for me
because, by this I have gained knowledge about what are the procedure
to follow for preparing a visiting card & also what information should
be provided in a visiting card.

24
 Also, by working in the sales department I have learned many things
about the sales department & how it corporate. I have learned that how
the sales department corporate all around the country & also about the
hierarchy system of the sales department. As I done my minor in
marketing beside the HR major, it helps me to enrich my knowledge
about my minor subject & provide me an additional skill.
 The most challenging work was assisting my supervisors in developing
the “Kormee” software, while preparing the master data for the
software I was facing some difficulties because there were so many
data of individual employees for personal to professional each data was
enlisted t the master data. So, me & my supervisors face some
difficulties to gather so much information from different departments
& divide them in different specific sections.
 Most importantly while preparing the compensation & benefit policy
assisting my supervisors was a great experience for me because it helps
& teaches me about the HR policies of corporate world. I gather
knowledge & learn that how to build policies & how the HR
department provide benefits to the employees on the basis of different
position & situation of individual employees.
 We overcome the challenge into a success by patience & hard work
because we perform the work by dividing the work with each other &
also fixed them in a deadline. It seems very difficult for first few days
but after some days we overcome it by continuously working on it.
Overall, I can say that I observed & gained so many things & values from this
internship journey. It helps me to be punctual, a morning person, most
importantly a hardworking & patience person. It helps me to cope up with
deadlines & new challenges. Moreover, it helps me to be a good corporate
person & helps me for my future career.

SWOT Analysis:

25
Strengths:
Good production facility
Skilled manpower
Experience, large and good distribution line to the tail customers.
The Brand itself.
Ensure best quality, maintain hygiene (with medical certificate) issue
strictly on production floor.
Low & mid-price range of the products
Huge variation in product line.
Very responsive to market demand.
Has well organized sales team to fulfill their customer demand on
time.
Always monitors the competitors.
Weaknesses:
Lack of some common facilities for corporate employees like canteen.
Lack of latest technologies
Poor marketing and branding strategy.
They are announcing less budget than others again and again for
product branding, so that urban peoples are getting few knowledges
about its products.
Unable to establish any other product like Mr. Cookie.
Haque Battery was another famous product, but this product losing its
popularity day by day for lack of product development.

26
On the other hand, because of lack of effective skilled machine
operator they are facing delay in production sometimes.
Lacks of Supply of raw materials are another barrier for fruitful
production.

Opportunities:

Already export its products in overseas

Growing demand of Mr. Cookie light, Shormalai & Lemon Puff
Haque battery was only Bangladeshi manufactured battery & was a market
leader in early 90s, now it is a great opportunity for comeback & to be a
market leader again.
If they improve their marketing & branding strategy & invest more on
marketing then many more products will grab the market as market leaders.
Threats:
High Competition
Imported ingredients for product manufacturing
Lack of R&D facilities.
The Haque battery will be disappear in future because of lack of proper
branding & product development.
Lack of star product in future because of poor marketing
Problem Identification & Solution:
Problems:
 The training effectiveness is not measured properly.
 There is no specific paternal leave for male employees.
 There is no specific canteen for the employees of the company, so the
employees have to eat their food on their working table which is very
uncomfortable for them.
 Lack of latest technology. For this the company faces some difficulties in
production in recent times.

27
 The policy of earned leave is not currently implemented in the company. So,
the employees feel demotivated as the other competitor company provide this
policy.
 There is no policy for provident fund.
 There is no implementation of gratuity fund as well, it is a great lacking of the
company as the employees feel demotivated, & it is one of the reasons for
resigning from the company.
 There are lacking in Maternity leave payment. The payment of this leave is not
provided properly by the company.
 The company does not provide overseas training to their employees, so that
the employees do not get proper knowledge as their competitor’s colleague
does. It is a great lacking of the company as their employees lack behind by
knowledge & cannot contribute properly.

 The salary of the field sales employees is not up to the mark.

 Sometimes the management provides the monthly salary late. They do not
maintain any date or, time range for providing their salaries.

 They do not have transportation system for their corporate employees. On the
other hand, their other competitor company has transportation for their
employees. This is strongly demotivating the employees as many employees
live far from their office.

I have made some prior research based on the employees for the solutions of
the problems of the company & based on the major problems I have made the
questions. I got the information & prepared the questionnaire by the questioner
method of research. I have done my research on 20 people in total from
different departments.

Recommendation/ Solutions:

It requires more experience & knowledge to give recommendation to such big

company like A. T. Haque Limited. Three months of internship is not enough to give
any recommendation. I would like to give my opinion based on my observation for
more improvements. First of all I would like to recommend from the research part:

• As per the research from question 1 my recommendation is as the maximum

number of employees is satisfied by the activity of the HR department of the company
so they should try to improve & update their activity for their employee’s satisfaction.

• From question number 2 we can clearly see that the HR policy of the company
is not satisfactory at all. There are many lacking in their policy as I mentioned earlier
in the problems section. I would suggest to change their policy & add earned leave &
gratuity for better employee satisfaction.

• From question number 3 we can see that as maximum number of companies

nowadays provide transportation facility. The employees of this company strongly
want transportation facility. So, I highly recommend that they should provide the
transportation facility as it is also a part of employee benefit system.

• As per question number 4 from the research we can see that the maximum
number of employees want canteen facility, as it is one of the common & basic

32
facility an employee must have.so, they should provide their employees a well-
organized canteen as a basic need. So, they can have & bought their food from there.

• According to question number 5 as 15 out of 20 employees want to have their

salary in the first week of a month so, the company should not provide the salary late
to their employees, & they should fixed a date range that the salaries should provide
on that particular time range.

• The company should change some major things in their benefit policy that
they should properly provide the maternity payment properly & also they should add
the paternity leave for the male employees.

So, these are the recommendation I can suggest from my experience, knowledge &
my research. If the company takes some action according to the suggestions, I think
the company would turn into one of the best companies to work in to an employee.

Conclusion

From the above discussions it can be conclude in such a way that as A. T. Haque
Limited is one of the oldest & largest biscuit & battery manufacturer company in
Bangladesh it has a good production strategy, Smart product line, innovative products
with quality. It also has a HR policy with the mixture of some lacking. As the HR
department continuously trying to improve their policy, they also have some lacking
in their policy but on the other hand they always trying to be aware about their
employee’s problem so, the employees can contribute their skill properly in the
company’s growth. The company always monitors its competitors & try to update
their product according to the market & customer demand.

Working on the company benefit policy was a great opportunity for me as it is the
main company policy. I have gained immense knowledge by working on this. If they
work on their lackings & improve their policies according to the recommendations,
they will turn into one of the best companies & corporate office an employee can
work.
