About the Stamp
This issue celebrates the two
hundred years of birth of a woman
who was immortalized as a heroine
on two continents for her deeds. The
art of the stamp is a composition of
Anita Garibaldi in her multiple facets:
the woman, the warrioress, the
mother. There is also a drawing of a
rose, symbol of Anita. Three colors
were used, which, together with the
color of the paper, represent Brazil,
Anita’s birth country, and Italy, which
recognizes her and her companion
Giuseppe Garibaldi as heroes
responsible for the unification of
the country. The technique used was

 200 Anos do Nascimento de Anita Garibaldi
Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro nasceu em 30 de agosto de 1821 no
sul da então província de Santa Catarina, parte do Reino Unido de
Portugal, Brasil e Algarves (1815-22). Ela morava na vila de Laguna
quando em 1839 os rebeldes farroupilhas proclamaram a República
Juliana, separando a região do Império Brasileiro (1822-89).
Naquele momento, conheceu o italiano Giuseppe Garibaldi, um dos
combatentes farroupilhas, por quem se apaixonou e posteriormente
casou, passando a ser chamada de Anita Garibaldi.
Com grande coragem, Anita participou diretamente dos combates
em terra e no mar, ao lado de Giuseppe, na defesa da República
Juliana e, após a queda desta, nas lutas que se seguiram entre as
forças farroupilhas e imperiais. Ela acabou sendo capturada em um
combate ocorrido na região de Curitibanos em Santa Catarina, mas
conseguiu fugir sozinha pelas matas da região e encontrar Giuseppe
Garibaldi.
O casal seguiu com as forças farroupilhas para o Rio Grande do
Sul, onde Anita deu à luz, em 16 de setembro de 1840, a seu primeiro
filho, Menotti, na localidade de Mostardas. A região foi atacada por
forças imperiais e Anita, mesmo convalescendo do parto, conseguiu
fugir a cavalo dos atacantes, com seu filho recém-nascido nos braços.
A família seguiria para São Gabriel, sede dos farroupilhas, onde
Giuseppe solicitou sua saída das forças combatentes, mudando-se a
seguir com Anita e seu filho para Montevidéu no Uruguai.
Na capital daquele país, Anita e Giuseppe oficializaram seu
casamento em 26 de março de 1842. Ele acabaria se envolvendo
nas lutas dos uruguaios contra as forças do ditador argentino Juan
Manoel Rosas, tendo criado naquele momento a Legião Italiana,
composta por exilados políticos, a qual também o acompanharia no
retorno à Itália e nas lutas para unificação daquele país. No Uruguai
nasceram mais três filhos do casal, Rosita, Teresita e Riccioti, sendo
que Rosita acabou falecendo de difteria em 1845.
O envolvimento de Giuseppe no movimento pela unificação
da Itália, levou a família de volta à Europa, em 1848, onde ele logo
se envolveu em combates em prol dessa causa. A proclamação
da República Romana, em 1849, foi seguida de um ataque do
exército francês, tendo Garibaldi e seus voluntários lutado em
sua defesa. Anita, grávida de seu quinto filho, foi ao encontro
de Giuseppe em meio aos sangrentos combates pela defesa da
cidade de Roma.
Com a queda da República Romana, Anita, Giuseppe e mais de
três mil homens, objetivando continuar a luta, se retiram da cidade,
escapando do cerco das tropas francesas e austríacas. Durante a
fuga, o exército acabou se dissolvendo e enfraquecida, Anita adoece
e precisa ser carregada por Giuseppe e alguns de seus companheiros.
O grupo, em meio a perseguição dos austríacos, chegou à Mandriole,
no norte da Itália, com Anita cada vez mais doente. Ela acabou por
falecer na Fazenda Guiccioli, em 4 de agosto de 1849. Anita teve de
ser enterrada às pressas e sem a presença de Giuseppe, que precisou
escapar do cerco austríaco. Os restos mortais de Anita passaram
depois por diversos sepultamentos, sendo inclusive em determinado
momento escondidos por correligionários de Giuseppe, pois temiam
que fossem profanados. O marido e os filhos retornaram à Itália em
1859.
Anita passou a ser progressivamente celebrada na Itália, junto
com Giuseppe, como heroína da unificação italiana, ganhando um
monumento equestre em sua homenagem na colina do Gianicolo, em
Roma, sob o qual foi definitivamente sepultada no ano de 1932. No
Brasil, devido ao regime monárquico, e ao envolvimento de Anita com
a causa republicana, ocorreu um silenciamento a seu respeito durante
boa parte do século XIX, mesmo quando ela já era louvada como
heroína na Itália.
Com a Proclamação da República, ela passaria a ser cada vez
mais celebrada, junto com as pessoas que lutaram em prol dos ideais
republicanos. Sua coragem, seu amor por Giuseppe e seu engajamento
nas lutas no Brasil e na Itália lhe trouxeram a alcunha de “a heroína dos
dois Mundos”. Ela teve seu nome inscrito, pela Lei Federal nº 12.615, de
30 de abril de 2012, no Livro dos Heróis da Pátria Brasileira, tornando-
se dessa forma oficialmente uma heroína brasileira.
Duzentos anos após seu nascimento, Anita Garibaldi é
considerada um símbolo de amor, determinação, bravura e
capacidade de luta por ideais, sendo homenageada das mais
diversas formas, em músicas, poemas, livros, filmes e monumentos.
Seu nome foi dado a ruas, avenidas, praças, bairros, cidade,
escolas, centros de saúde, entre outros, no Brasil e na Itália. Seu
nome também denomina grupos culturais nativistas, coletivos de
lutas sociais e feministas. Lembrar de Anita, de sua vida, suas lutas
e ideais também é uma forma de destacar o inconformismo e a
busca pela superação das adversidades, qualidades fundamentais
ao ser humano para fazer frente aos seus desafios na construção
de um mundo melhor.

200 Years of Anita Garibaldi’s Birth
Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro was born on August 30, 1821 in the
south of the then province of Santa Catarina, part of the United
Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves (1815-22). She lived in
the village of Laguna when in 1839 the Farroupilha rebels proclaimed
the Juliana Republic, separating the region from the Brazilian Empire
(1822-89). At that time, she met the Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of
the Farroupilha fighters, with whom she fell in love and later married,
becoming known as Anita Garibaldi.
With great courage, Anita participated directly in the combats
on land and at sea, alongside Giuseppe, in the defense of the Juliana
Republic and, after its fall, in the fights that followed between the
Farroupilha and Imperial forces. She was eventually captured in a
combat that took place in the Curitibanos region of Santa Catarina,
but managed to escape alone through the region’s forests and find
Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The couple went with the Farroupilha forces to Rio Grande do
Sul, where Anita gave birth, on September 16, 1840, to their first
child, Menotti, in the town of Mostardas. The region was attacked
by imperial forces and Anita, even convalescing from childbirth,
managed to escape on horseback from the attackers, with her
newborn child in her arms. The family would go to São Gabriel,
home of the Farroupilhas, where Giuseppe requested his departure
from the fighting forces, and then moved with Anita and her son to
Montevideo, Uruguay.
In the capital of that country, Anita and Giuseppe made their
marriage official on March 26, 1842. He would become involved in
the struggles of the Uruguayans against the forces of the Argentine
dictator Juan Manoel Rosas, having created at that time the Italian
Legion, composed of political exiles, the which would also accompany
him on his return to Italy and on the struggles for the unification of
that country. In Uruguay three more children were born to the couple,
Rosita, Teresita and Riccioti, and Rosita ended up dying of diphtheria
in 1845.
Giuseppe’s involvement in the movement for the unification of
Italy took the family back to Europe in 1848, where he soon became
involved in fighting for that cause. The proclamation of the Roman
Republic in 1849 was followed by an attack by the French army, with
Garibaldi and his volunteers fighting in its defence. Anita, pregnant
with her fifth child, went to meet Giuseppe amid the bloody battles
for the defense of the city of Rome.
