1.

Compute (estimate) the carbon footprint of transporting 1000 1-liter bottles of Fiji
water from the Yaqara Valley bottling plant to Atlanta, GA.
1. Using the Logistics and Shipping data from the case, construct a “likely”
route for the journey from Yaquara Valley (believed to be close to Tavua,
Fiji) to Atlanta. How many transit stages does the journey have? What
are the transportation modes for each stage? How much time do each
stage and the complete journey take?
2. What is the carbon footprint of the journey (in kg CO2Eq)?
1. Find an approximate weight of 1000 1-liter bottles.
2. Identify the emission factor for each transportation stage.

 Use the weight, distance, and emission factor to find the carbon footprint for each
transportation stage and the journey.

1. Can you suggest an alternative and practically feasible route that could reduce the
carbon footprint? What is the magnitude of the reduction?

2. How would you go about estimating the carbon footprint of the production cycle for
Fiji Water? Give a rough estimate of the total (production transportation) carbon
footprint for 1000 bottles of Fiji water.
3. How would you estimate the carbon footprint for 1000 liters of tap water?
4. Not for submission but be prepared to discuss in class: what is greenwashing? What
do you think about Fiji’s Carbon Negative campaign? Does it constitute a
greenwashing? Can you think of other examples of (potential) greenwashing? Why
do companies engage in this practice?
