BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

The materials that exist around us are made up of matter. They


can be solids, liquids, or gases. There are different materials in our
environment which can be identified and described according to their
characteristics or properties. They can also be classified based on
their ability to absorb water, float, or sink, and undergo decay.

Materials that Absorb Water

Absorb means to take in something such as liquid in a natural


or gradual way. Sponge is a porous material that can absorb water
because it has small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.

On the other hand, plastic is a non-porous material which does not


absorb water. Its surface is smooth and sealed which does not allow
air or liquid to pass through.

Materials that Float and Sink

Float means to rest or remain on the surface of a liquid while
sink means to fall to the bottom of a liquid. Some materials float on
top of the water. Some materials stay submerged partway down the
water. Some materials sink fast and some sink slow. Everything can
either float or sink. There are some objects that are heavy, but they
float. Other objects are light, but they sink. The reason some objects
float, and others sink because of the object’s density. The less
density an object has the easier it will float in the water. The more
density an object has, the easier it will sink in the water.

Materials that Undergo Decay

Decay means to be slowly destroyed into bits in the presence of


water, air, and soil. Plants and animals do not decay at the same
time. Decaying materials are things that are rotten, and it can be
decomposed because of bacteria that it absorbed or it has. Some of
the decaying materials are as follows: fruit peelings, leaves, dead
bodies, paper, and food. Decaying materials become organic
fertilizers that enriches the soil. Many factors contribute to the
processes of decomposition, including temperature, amount of light,
aeration, moisture, type of material that is decomposing, and the
source of bacteria and fungi. Refrigerating leftover foods avoid or
delay spoilage because microorganisms that break down food do not
grow fast in cold temperature.

different characteristics or properties such as: size, shape, color,
texture, and weight. They can be changed by cutting, tearing, folding,
twisting, bending, stretching, pressing, coloring, crumpling, melting,
hammering and others. These actions may change the size, shape,
texture, color, and other characteristics or properties.

Materials that Can be Bent

Bend means to force or shape an object into a curve or angle


without breaking. Solid materials can be bent. When bent, these
materials may change their size and shape. No new material is
formed. Only the physical appearance of the materials is changed.

Some things are easy to bend like the plastic straws, cellphone cord
and paper clips. Other things do not bend at all, like the wooden
table, glass bottle and hollow block. Bending is one of the important
tasks in the metal processing industry. Steel and stainless steel are
two of the most important alloys used in bending.

Materials that Can be Pressed

Press means to apply pressure to flatten or shape an object.


Solid materials can be pressed. When pressed, these materials
undergo physical change. They may change their size, shape, and
texture. However, no new material is formed because only the
physical appearance of the material is changed.

Pressing solid materials is very useful in some activities. In pastry


industry, pressing is done to flatten a dough into a desired shape like
circular shape for pizza. In pottery, clay is forced into a mold in order
to take on a certain shape. When sewing, pressing is specifically
important to get the polished look of the clothes. Pressing is done by
placing the iron down on the material and lifting it rather than sliding it
across the fabric. Pressed flowers can be used to decorate note

cards, bookmarks, place cards, or lampshades, made into ornaments,
and many more.

Malleable materials may be flattened into thin sheets by hammering.


Examples of malleable metals are gold, iron, aluminum, copper,
silver, and lead. Gold and silver are highly malleable. When a piece of
hot iron is hammered it takes the shape of a sheet. The property is

not seen in non-metals. Non-malleable metals may break apart when
struck by a hammer. Other solid materials like rock and cement can
be broken down into pieces using a hammer. Hammers are very
useful to us but extra care should be observed when using these to
avoid accident or injuries.

Materials that Can be Cut

Cut means to break the surface of an object or divide


something using a sharp tool such as knife or a pair of scissors. Solid
materials can be cut. When cut, these materials may change their
size and shape, but no new material is formed. Hence, only the
physical characteristics or properties of the solid material is changed
when cut. Not all solid materials, like iron, steel, etc., can be cut using
sophisticated cutters (i.e., metal cutters/machine cutters.)

cardboard, fabric and other materials. These can be very useful when
doing creative handy crafts and household activities. Extra care

stove (depending on what is used by family for cooking)

WHAT TO DO:
1. Describe the sugar, piece of chocolate and margarine/ butter.
2. Put spoonful of the sugar in a pan.
3. Ask your parent or guardian to turn on the stove.
CAUTION: ASK FOR ASSISTANCE. DO NOT PLAY WHILE
DOING THE ACTIVITY.
4. Get the pan with sugar and heat it for 2-3 minutes. Observe
what happens and take note of your observations.
CAUTION: THE PAN WILL BECOME HOT. HANDLE IT
WITH CARE.
5. After 2-3 minutes, remove the pan from the flame.
6. Wait for few minutes until the material cools off. Observe
what happens and take note of your observation.

Solids can be combined with liquid materials, but they behave
differently depending on the property of the solid. Some completely
dissolve, others do not. Other solids settle at the bottom of the
container while others stay within the liquid. Some solids spread
evenly in the liquid, but some do not. When mixed with liquid, some
change their size, shape, and color but some do not.
