The themes are (1) Social Influence (2) Beneficial (3) Aspiration (4) Job

Opportunities (5) Personal Development (6) Effective Teaching Strategies. Each

theme is supported by 1-2 statements and is evident by the 9 informants of the

study.

Presentation of Themes

I. Social Influence

Social influence is a result of interacting with an individual or a group in

which a persons' health-related behavior changes. A person can change the

perception or pursue what is taught by others. The influence of socializing can

cultivate inspiration by complying with their peers’ aspiring choices or motivated

by their completion (Rosenqvist, 2018).

Page 3

A. Inspired by the Teachers

Inspiration is a state of encouragement that urges a person to take further

steps in life (Oleynick et al.,2014). Inspired by the teachers implies that

individuals alter their decisions by the performance of teachers, which affects

their judgment that somehow serves as their determination to become a future

educator (Sjaastad, 2011). As one of the informants said:

"Kay tungod sad ato sa kuan na inspire ko sa usa sako

teacher sauna nga nice kaayo motudlo." (Informant 1, Line
9)

B. Inspired by Family

Inspired by family implies that the decision of an individual is affected by

the perception of their family. Through this, a child follows the path of their family.

This idealism serves as their motivation to pursue a goal. The encouragement of

parents or relatives may serve as their model; they help the students to

distinguish themselves from what choices they will make (Sjaastad, 2011). As

one of the informants said:

"Nya kanang na inspire pud ko sa akong mga tita kay

teacher pud sila." (Informant 4, Line 12)

C.  Parent’s Choice

Selecting a course is a tough decision; the choice must be chosen by the

student correctly to correlate your strength. Parents have a significant impact on

Page 4

their child's decision making. An adult is greatly affected by the influence of his

parents because of the uncertain decision about his career. The insights of

parents are more powerful than the perception of children themselves. (Frome &

Eccles, 1998) As one of the informants said:

“So feel nako mao nalang na akong kwaon ang-ang kay

mao may giingon sakong parents.” ( Informant 3, Line 21)
D. Motivated by the Less Fortunate

Many young people are uneducated for some reason caused by poverty.

The students that are least likely to succeed in school come disproportionately

from low socio-economic status; helping those students who struggled the most

in school will help them in achieving their desired goals. (Johannessen, 2004) As

one of the informants said:

“Ahm I think I want to pursue Education because ahm,

seeing our society. I want to help as well and ahm,
because having a course, an Education Degree, just
don't want to teach but also an advocate to help people
and the street children as well.” (Informant2, Line 5-7)

II. Beneficial

The benefit is an advantage gained from doing something. Additional

benefits of teaching are widely recognized. The students who wanted to pursue

an education degree had witnessed the possible benefits of being a teacher.

Those benefits drive the informants to continue and foresee themselves as an

educator.
Page 5

One of the rewarding benefits of teaching is making a difference in the

lives of students. The teacher's schedule is also one of the advantages of being a

teacher (Mohr, 2019).

A. Give and Take

Give and take refers to an exchange of opinions. It is the act of accepting

other people's ideas wherein both will be able to establish mutual understanding.

There are mutual benefits between a teacher and a student. Both are

learning differently. The informants became motivated by the thought that

becoming a teacher is not only about teaching but learning as well, together with

their students.

Many teachers had driven by the goal of sharing knowledge and expertise

with the students. (Theuer, 2019) Teachers became more patient, resilient, and

much better in conveying ideas. Teachers are learning, especially in knowing

how to inspire and nurture the students (Pozniak, 2019). As one of the informants

said:

“Makat on sad ko as a teacher or as kuan, professor, the

more ko mutudlo nila, the more sad ko makakuan murag
give and take.”(Informant 1, Line 19 and 21)

B. Assumed Comfortable Benefits

The students want to pursue education because of some benefits that

they might gain. There are beneficial reasons as to why students want to pursue

education. Job schedule is one of the benefits of being a teacher because there

are better working hours and weekends. It provides the teachers enough time to
Page 6

spend with family, relax, and pursue other interests. Teachers mostly enjoy a lot

of vacations and with steady pay as well. These also enable them to refresh their

mind and body (Thomas, 2019). As one of the informants said:

"Ganahan sad ko sa part nga ahm, tawag anang mag chill-

chill lang sa classroom." ( Informant 9, Line 17)

III. Aspiration

Aspiration is a feeling of a strong desire to achieve something. It helps

students to visualize their future. It will also serve as their motivation to achieve

their desired goal, which is to become a teacher. Aspiration plays a significant

role in career decision making because it reflects the goals and objectives

towards a specific course of action. (Poudel & Maharjan, 2018)

A. Childhood Dream

Dreams are less abstract things that you want to achieve someday. A

childhood dream is something you desired to be when you were a child. Usually,

this type of dream could change as you grow up but this could be a reflection of

talents, passions, and needs expressed when you were still a child. Having a

teaching profession as a childhood dream proves that it is really the students'

passion since they still want to pursue the profession despite many realizations

and changes occurring as they grow up. Childhood dreams can be a useful tool

to overcome the challenges that hinder success. (McClure & McClure, 2003) As

one of the informants said:

Page 7

"So, kanang since childhood nako dream ni siya nako nga

ganahan ko mag maestra, mutudlo ug mga estudyante."
(Informant 3, Line 7)
B. Field of Interest

Interest is a feeling of excitement to learn more about something. The

student desired to become a teacher because they believe their strengths belong

to this kind of field. One's interest in the field can be influenced by the person's

values, talents, and personality. This will also guide the person in choosing a

career (Andrea, 2008). As one of the informants said:

"Kuan, first kay apil sya sa akong options sa college kay

kuan man gud one of my skills kay kanang
communications skills sa public gani" (Informant 8, Line 9)
IV. Job Opportunities

It is an opportunity for employment. Aims to provide more job opportunities

for unemployed people areas with few job opportunities Teachers can take steps

on their own to open doors to advancement in their careers. Knowing the

possibilities helps teachers get ahead, which often gives them greater

professional satisfaction and more pay. (White, 2018)

A. In-demand Job

It is an additional employment opportunity where there is a large number of

jobs available for people who seek employment in that area. Schools are always

looking for quality teachers, and there are some subjects and sectors that are

more in-demand than others. (2020) As one of the Informants said:

“nya kay na maka pwede kuno ko maka apply sa gawas

sad ana” (Line 13, Informant no. 1)
Page 8

B. High Salary

The wages you earn for doing your job is called your salary. Teachers earn

as much money for the amount they do. It depends, but in any other similar

variation, you will find the same results. The demands varied across states, but a

raise in teacher pay was central to each. Teachers that have high salaries don't

give their full effort while teachers that are doing their best are underpaid.

(Evans, 2019) As one of the informants said:

“First of all, ang first nakong reason ana kay like sa

income sad bitaw, dako og hatag na sweldo” (Line 12,
Informant no. 7)
V. Personal Development

Personal Development is chasing personal growth by expanding self-

awareness and knowledge and improving personal skills. It helps students in

knowing their strengths and things for improvements (Thum, 2012).

A. Building Self-esteem

Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of self-worth or personal value.

It helps in succeeding at school or work because you believe yourself to be capable

of success ( Cherry & Gans, 2019 ). There is a positive relationship between having

self-esteem and academic achievement. Having low self-esteem can decrease a

student's desire to learn and does affect the performance of the students in school.

Thus, students with high self-esteem generally achieved a higher score ( Aryana,

2010). As one of the informants said:

" Akong preparations jud kay akong self pinakauna. How I

carry myself in front of people." ( Informant no. 2, Line 24)

B. Study Hard
Page 9

Studying is vital in preparation for the future. Studying hard refers to a

student that pays a lot of effort in studying at school. Efficient studying is one of

the needed requirements to pursue an education degree. Studying hard at school

will acquire the skills one may need. School provides knowledge. If one will study

hard, choosing career fields will be easy. In pursuing a career, one must work for

it; and that is to study harder (Reyes, 2017).

As one of the informants said:

" Kuan magtuon lang gyud ko ug maayo" ( Informant 4,

Line 29)

C. Public Communication Development

Communication skills involve listening and speaking, as well as reading

and writing. For effective teaching, a teacher needs to be highly skilled in all

these areas to teach by the ability and capability of the students. Teachers need

to adopt such skills of communication in order to motivate the students towards

their learning process. (Khan, 2017)

"Dapat moparticipate kung maayo sa kanang mga kuan

mga oral recitation or kanang mga speak magmag storya
storya sa atubangan para ma build sad akong confidence."
( Line 55 &56 , Informant no.1)
VI. Effective Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies are techniques used to guide the students in learning

the contents of their desired course and in developing individual ambitions for

their future. These strategies identify various learning methods that allow them to

enhance the right strategy that corresponds to a particular group. Analysis of the
Page 10

potentials of students renders a key pillar towards a successful teaching strategy.

(Armstrong, 2013)

A. Gathering Teaching Information

Information is the data relayed regarding a certain fact or condition.

Gathering information is the process of obtaining knowledge and imparts an

immense potential in enhancing educational materials. Gathering information

definitely helps in the preparation of taking up an education degree since

students could come across numerous ways or strategies in teaching which they

could apply when they become licensed teachers (Garner, 2020). As one of the

informants said:

"nya nagkuan nasad kog mga schools, nagsearch nasad

kos google unsa ang mga makuha, unsa akong mga
benefits ana , unsa akong makuha if sa public magtudlo or
sa private ko magtudlo." (Informant 3, Line 26)
B. Practicing Teaching Strategy

Strategy refers to a group of options and actions that you are going to

create over some time to attain your desired objective. An example of teaching

strategies is enhancing reporting. Reporting is the process used to manifest

learnings acquired from analyzing student learning. Reporting as a teaching

strategy certainly aids in honing a student's verbal as well as non-verbal skills.

(Blackwood Primary School, 2016) As one of the informants said:

"Practice nako, the strategies nako when it comes to

reporting kanang ireporting man gyud na ang usual na
especially if mag teacher ka mao man gyud na ang inyung
buhaton everyday." (Informant 8, Line 55)

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and

recommendations of the study.

Summary of Findings

Based on the presented and gathered data, the researchers found out the

reasons why students want to pursue an education degree and their preparation.

The reason why students want to pursue an education degree is that they

are inspired by the people around them, influencing them to take such courses.

Students find the degree beneficial in various aspects such that, this degree

offers high demands for employment.

Page 12

The preparations that the students made beforehand are developing

themselves through engaging in activities that can enhance their self-esteem as

well as their public communication skills. Students also obtain effective teaching

strategies by gathering informative information over any particular matter and

through constant practice.

Conclusion

Based on the findings, the study revealed that there are various reasons

why students want to pursue an education degree; and it is not simple for them to

make such a decision as it has plenty of factors that can affect their

determination. Taking up an education degree is not that easy as it acquires

massive preparations. Students encountered a lot of challenges and adjustments

while preparing for their future careers. Despite this, the students were able to

cope with the challenges and face it with confidence.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, the researchers

recommended:

● HUMSS students may continue seeking more strategies that might be

useful for their future career, which is to become a teacher

● Parents may provide support to their children by listening to their concerns

and understanding the challenges they have encountered in the midst of

their preparation in pursuing an education degree.

Page 13

● Teachers may help the students in developing their skills and teach them

some strategies to cope up with their difficulties.

● Future researchers may have an idea to start their future studies that

relate to the HUMSS students. They may use this study as a guide or

basis for future research and may enhance this study.
