Their Mission and Vision Statements

Mission Statement-:
“We seek to address the health care needs of the 5.8 billion people in the emerging markets
by driving innovation and being a frontrunner in research and development of new vaccines
and bio-therapeutics”.
Analysis of Mission Statement-:
Bharat Biotech’s mission statement clearly states why the company exists, ‘to address
healthcare needs of emerging markets’.
I don’t like the fact that they have stated that they want to address needs of 5.8 billion people.
Mission statements aren’t supposed to be changed very often, and since the world population
is always increasing, their market size will also increase.

Vision Statement-:
To offer affordable, safe and effective healthcare solutions to combat mankind’s dreaded
illnesses and to thus eradicate or at least control their occurrence in the years to come.
Analysis of Vision Statement-:
Bharat Biotech’s vision statement is very concise and self explanatory. It reflects the
company’s goal very clearly. They have taken the long term view into consideration very
well.

>Bharat Biotech’s mission and vision statements played a big role in limiting the number of
covid cases and casualties.
>Had Bharat Biotech not been true to their mission and vision statements, the situation in
India and several other countries might have been much worse.
>They treated the pandemic as an opportunity not just to earn profit, but to save lives as well.

How Bharat Biotech Stayed True to their Mission and Vision Statements

1) Initiated Research During Extreme Lockdown.

Remember the time when we all were locked up inside our houses making Dalgona coffee,
when we were so afraid of covid, that we stopped meeting our close friends and even our
nextdoor neighbours.
During this period, during ‘extreme lockdown’ , Bharat Biotech started working on
developing a vaccine to prevent Covid 19. Their Scientists travelled from Hyderabad to Pune
by road to bring the isolated novel coronavirus live strain to their research facility.
They did exactly what they said in their vision statement, they gave every possible thing to
combat mankind’s dreaded illnesses.
All Bharat Biotech scientists worked long hours daily, risking lives of themselves and their
loved ones to save millions of lives.
It took Bharat Biotech only eleven months to come out with their vaccine ‘Covaxin’. And not
any ordinary eleven months, eleven months full of restrictions, fear, and losses.

2) Delivering lifesaving vaccines despite financial constraints.

The technological cost of developing the vaccine in a short span of eleven months was very
high. Also the government had put a price cap of Rs.150 per vaccine dose on both covishield
and covaxin for their national immunization programme. At these price levels, it would be
very difficult for Bharat Biotech to survive in the long term.
Which is why they were forced to increase the price per dose for private hospitals.
Hence covaxin was more costly than other vaccines in the country, which was a major
challenge they faced.
To compensate for the high price gap, they made it a priority to maintain steady supply,
hence they faced less dose shortages as compared to other vaccines.

3) Increasing production to meet the Country’s needs.

Bharat Biotech is expanding their Bangalore facility to increase production of vaccine doses
in order to fulfil the country’s requirement.
At current capacity they can produce 200 million doses per annum, and after expansion they
will be able to produce over 700 million doses per annum. That is more than thrice of what
they are currently producing.
They have also agreed to share their technology with a few psu’s to increase production of
the vaccine.

4) Exporting vaccines to other Emerging Nations.

As they mentioned in their mission statement, Bharat Biotech has been constantly addressing
healthcare needs of citizens in emerging nations.
Top 10 Countries by volume where covaxin has already been exported-:
1)Bangladesh 2)Myanmar
3)Nepal 4)Bhutan
5)Maldives 6)Mauritius
7)Seychelles 8)Srilanka
9)Bahrain 10)Brazil
As you can see, primary importers of covaxin are all either under developed or developing
nations.

Conclusion
It can be concluded that Bharat Biotech didn’t lose hope during the pandemic despite facing
numerous challenges and were able to stick to their mission and vision statements
successfully.
