T
Definitiion Of Com
mputer & Informatio
I on Techno
ology
Computer is a collectio on of devices that functionn as a unit. The
T most basic collection in ncludes a Commput‐
er CPU, a Monitor, a Keyboard,
K andd a Mouse. TheT Computer CPU is norm mally a rectan
ngular box thaat sits
on your desktop
d (called a "Desktop p Case") or neext to your kn
nee under thee desk (calledd a "Tower Caase").
The comp puter's CPU iss actually a small
s electronnic device insside the casee but the term
m is often ussed to
refer to th
he whole collection of elecctronics inside the box.

While thee concept of Information technology refers to the faact that it is now very easyy to link comp
puters
together and
a access re esources fromm other comp
puters. The Co omputer Netw work is a good
d example off shar‐
ing the infformation/ haardware reso
ources.

By conneccting to the in
nternet you gain
g access too millions of other
o computters that are connected arround
the world

SOFTW
WARE
Software is the set of electronic
e instructions that make the haardware funcctional & provvides the facility to
perform different

Personal Computers have h become a large part of our lives and have prroven to makke society a better
b
place to liive. The follow
wing questionns will demonnstrate the im
mportance of computers in
n our daily livees.
• Have they (Com mputers) really helped us in every way?
• Have they brought up new problems thaat never existted?
• Do they really benefit us orr are they really harming our o society and our children?
Plan to exxplore these issues and ho ope to provee that PC’s are very valuab
ble in almost every way iff used
and monnitored properly.

PC’s have helped socie ety in many ways.

w Allowingg the PC to doo most of thee work for us,, it cuts our time in
half. Proggrams, written
n by a prograammers (tech hnical expertss), enable thee PC to think of solutions faster
f
than any human,
h making the possibbilities endlesss.

Computerrs have prove en to help sm

Beyond th he fact that computers
c play pivotal ro
ole in our gen neral lives, there are somee areas where it is
pretty diffficult for hum
man to perform different functions. Folllowing are the main areass where comp puters
can perform more efficciently than human
h beingss:
1. Repetitive task:
It is human nature that rep petitive jobs can
c result borringness, while computer can perform same
seet of instructiions repeateddly in way as first

on was performed.
2. Co omplex Math hematical Callculations:
Computers are e ideally desiigned to perfform mathem matical calculaations. Beforre the use of com‐

HAZAR
RDS OF COM
MPUTER USAGE
U
Many peo ople think thaat PC’s starve families of quality time to ogether. Healtth reports sho ow PC’s can be
attributed
d to bad healtth; attracting people to staay indoors, sitting in a chair, in front of a monitor, most
of the day. There has been a study showing th hat spending all their timee sitting in a chair, staringg at a
monitor can
c be unheallthy. Followin ng are the few
w health prob blems caused by excessive use of computers.
1. Repetitive straain Injury:
Repetitive straain injury (RSSI), also know wn as Cumulative Traumaa Disorder (C CTD), occupattional
ovveruse syndrrome, non‐sp pecific arm pain or work related uppe er limb disorder (WRULD), is a
diagnosis used d for hand annd arm pain that
t is believeed to be caussed by chronic misuse of these
boody parts, for instance, while
w using a computer on n the job. Connditions suchh as RSI tend to be
asssociated with both physiccal and psychosocial stresssors.
A 2008 study showed thatt 68% of UK workers suffeered from so R with the most
ome sort of RSI,
co
ommon problem areas being the back, shoulders, wrists, w and hannds.

AN OVE

O MS OFFIICE 2007
Microsoftt Office 2007 is recent deevelopment of o windows version of Miccrosoft Officee System afteer MS

n of wh hich is the en

new graphical user interface(GUI), replacing thee menus and toolbars
t ( wh
hich have beeen the cornerstone
of office since
s its incep

a the RIBBONN.

In previouus releases of
o Microsoft Office appliccations, peop nus, toolbars, task
ple used a syystem of men

m worked weell when the applications had a
limited nu
umber of commmands.

Now that the program ms do so mucch more, the menus and toolbars
t systeem does not work as well. Too
many proogram feature es are too hard for many users to find. For this reason, the overrriding design
n goal
for the Offfice FLUENT USER INTERFFACE is to maake it easier for people to o find and use the full ran

features these
t applicattions providee.

INTROD
DUCTION OF
O MICRO
OSOFT WORD 2007

We can’t deny the po ower of previous versions of Microsoftt word, besid des all
the efficieencies there was
w a gap th hat a majorityy of commands were hidd den in
the shadoow of differennt menus andd dialog boxess and it was quite
q difficultt for a
common user to have a quick accesss over these commands.

Microsoftt Word 2007 is a very useeful word pro ocessing proggram that pro
ovides
the facilityy for documeentation. Documentation may
m be in thee form of Inteernal /
external memos,
m minutes of the meeeting, researrch paper etc.

Another value
v able ad
ddition in Miccrosoft Word d 2007 is its ability of Autto preview, before
b making any
change or applying an
ny setting to the text/objeect, Microsofft Word 2007 7 will display the preview
w, that
how text will
w look like if you will app
ply such setting.

Any otherr shift in the newer versioon is the channge of file type. In previous versions of
o MS Office (.doc)
file type were
w post fixe
ed with everyy word file, ho
owever in thee 2007 environment the file type is (.docx).

VARIAB

Defining Variable:
V

Before yo
ou begin to enter
e the daata, first of all
a you need to specify what
w variable each column will
representt. You do this by moving in
nto the windo ows labeled Variable
V View
w.

Fill the vaariable characcteristics by putting

p valuess in each column such as Name,
N Type, Width,
W and Decim‐
D
als etc. In the Variablee view window w, you will haave a row (Hoorizontal) of information fo
or each variable in
the data set.
s

• Variiable Name:
The first step is to
t specify an abbreviated name that willw represent the variable. Although yo ou can
use the default (VVar001), but it is recommended that assign more meaningful
m naame. By defau
ult va‐
riable name is limmited to eighht characters, However SP PSS will not permit

• Variiable type, Width

W & Decimmal places:
Oncce you have selected
s the variable
v namee and attemppt to move to
o the next co
olumn, inform
mation
will automatically appear in the
t remainingg row cells, th
his informatio
on represents the “defaullt set‐
tings” assigned by
b SPSS.

Althhough you can enter data using these default settings, it is easier in the lon ng run if you work
throough these co
olumns enteriing the speciffic characterisstics of the paarticular variaable.
If yo
ou move the cursor and click on the smmall grey box in the column reading “Numeric”, a su ubme‐
nu will
w appear th hat allows you to insert information ab bout the typee of variable. The T default varia‐
ble type
t is Nume
eric. Numeric refers to the Numbers and d String referrs to the actuaal Words.
In thhe most casees the default setting is used
u becausee numeric vaariables perm mit more statistical
analysis. Which explains whyy quantitativee researcherss tend to con nvert nominaal (categoricaal) va‐
riables into numbbers?

In thhis window, you

y also speccify the width and numbeers decimal places
p for thee variable. Th
he de‐
faultt width for variable is 08 characters. The
T numbers 24 is two characters in width;
w while 24.5
2 is
fourr characters in
n width, becaause you musst count the decimal
d point as a characteer.
To determine
d thee width of a variable,
v conssider the maxximum value that
t you are likely to obtaain for
a vaariable.

For example, if you

y were collecting data on o patients’ systolic
s blood
d pressure, yo
ou would pro
obably
speccify width of variable
v as 3 because you are unlikely to
t obtain a vaalue in the thoousands.
mpleting this step adds a safeguard fo
Com or data entry, if you attem mpt to enterr a number that is
greaater than the specified widdth, SPSS will put an asterisk (*) in the cell
c rather thaan the numbeer.

Note.
Unfoortunately, we

o define missiing values (so
o there are reeady if

By convvention, a value of “9” or some

s combinnation thereo of is used to signify
s missing data.
• When assigning a value to o the missing data, it is important to en nsure that thee number selected
is out sided the

p valuees.
o For example,
e if wee were coding age in a sam mple of patients, 9 might beb a possible value
may even 99. Con nsequently, we

Some reesearchers will
