LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT
J.J. , residing at New York, NY, being of sound mind, do hereby make, publish and declare
this to
be my Last Will and Testament and do revoke any and all other Wills and Codicils
heretofore
made by me.
I direct payment of my debts, funeral expenses and expenses for administration of my
estate.
I give the rest of my estate to my wife, E.J. If she predeceases me, I give the rest of my
estate to all
my children, equally, share and share alike.
If any beneficiary shall fail to survive me by 45 days, it shall be deemed that such person
shall
have predeceased me.
If neither my wife nor issue survive me, I direct that the rest of my estate be divided into
four
equal parts. I give one part to my wife s parents, or the survivor; one part to my mother; one
part to my
wife s sister, Jean; and one part to my brother, John.
I appoint my wife Executrix of this will. If she predeceases me, I appoint my friends (a) B.H
and
her husband, G, to said office, and (b) as guardian of the person of each of my children. I
direct that no
appointee hereunder shall be required to give bond for the faithful performance of the
duties of said office.
This Will has been prepared in duplicate, each copy of which has been executed as an
original. One of
these executed copies is in my possession and the other is deposited for safekeeping with
my

I, J.J., do hereby declare to the undersigned authority that I am 20 years of age or older, of
sound mind,
and under no constraint or undue influence willingly sign and execute this instrument as my
Last Will

HOMENS E LOBOS
EXISTEM MOMENTOS em que fico horas a olhar para o meu gato. Com inveja,
sempre com inveja. Só Deus sabe o que existe na cabeça de um felino. Mas
acompanho as rotinas dele e sei, filosoficamente falando, que ele é feliz.
Nós, humanos, seres temporais por excelência, vivemos aprisionados à ideia do
nosso próprio fim. E, como se não bastasse essa terrível condenação, somos também
incapazes de habitar cada momento inteiramente. O presente, em nós, está sempre
carregado de passado e de futuro: do que fomos, das memórias que temos, do
caminho e das escolhas que fizemos; e daquilo que gostaríamos de ser, ou ter, ou
fazer. O presente, para nós, não é um lugar para estar. É uma breve passagem a
caminho de outra breve passagem. Sempre e sempre e sempre até despedida final.
Por isso, aconselho: se quiserem entender a natureza da felicidade, comprem um
gato. E acompanhem a forma como ele cumpre as suas rotinas com entrega contida e
total. Ele não espera nada, ele não deseja nada. A felicidade, para ele, não existe por
adição: de objetos, experiências, lugares. Mas por repetição: ele repete as
experiências que são significativas. E, em cada repetição, existe a certeza da mesma
felicidade.
Um gato ajuda a entender tudo isso. Mas um livro publicado recentemente reforça
a ideia. Confesso: comprei o livro sem expectativas numa livraria do aeroporto de
Heathrow, em Londres.(...). O livro de Mark Rowlands é uma mistura erudita de
experiência pessoal e reflexão metafísica, em que Nietzsche, Heidegger e Camus têm
participação direta.
Ponto de partida: certo dia, o professor Rowlands leu anúncio no jornal. Alguém
vendia lobos por US$ 500. Rowlands entrou na aventura. Horas depois, a casa estava
destruída pelo novo hóspede, de nome Brenin, que não poupou a mobília e as
cortinas.
Primeira lição: um lobo não é um cão. E, nos 11 anos seguintes e após treino
apertado, Brenin foi a companhia do professor. Em casa. Na rua. Em viagem. E até
nas aulas, para espanto de colegas e alunos: enquanto o professor dissertava sobre
Platão e Aristóteles, o lobo dormitava ao seu lado. As aulas terminavam com um
uivo.(...).
