What is the purpose of port fast in STP?

1. The purpose of spanning-tree port fast is to access port can directly jump into forwarding state
without delay time and switches don’t generate TCN BPDU.
2. If switches don’t generate TCN BPDU then switches will not configure their aging-time 300sec to
15sec.

How to enable port fast on particular interface of switch-

1. (config)# int g0/0

# spanning-tree portfast

To globally enabled - spanning-tree portfast default

Note –Spanning-tree port fast is only enabled on access port not a trunk port.
Experiment 1 – let’s check reachbility between the both pc and as of now we’re getting reply, still there
is not configured spanning tree port fast on the access port .

Experiment2- what will happen - In case of your access port goes down, If access goes down and even
you didn’t enabled port fast on the switches then users will have to wait for 30sec’, after that they can
send data .
Let me enabled the port fast on switches.

sw(config)# int g0/0

# spanning-tree portfast

Note – Once you enabled port fast on the accesss port on the switcehs then you will see below things –
P2 Edge.

#show spanning-tree

Point 1 to be remember - you must configure port fast on access port – users which is connected
switch’s access port so that if access port come up then automatically jump in forwarding state without
delay.
Point 2 to be remember - Port fast only support on access not a trunk port.

Note- I couldn’t elaborate more as in my simulator tool it’s not support hence
sorry for it.

Thank you all
