Identifying the Type of Cable to Use in Interconnecting Cisco Devices


Objectives:

At the end of the laboratory, the students should be able to:

• Correctly identify cables for use in the network

Materials:

• Computer installed with Cisco Packet Tracer

Procedures:

Note: Please observe safety procedures and proper handling of equipment or materials
while conducting this laboratory exercise. This exercise is to be performed under an
Instructor’s supervision.

1. Click the Start menu or double-click the Desktop icon shown below to
open/launch the Packet Tracer from your Windows computer.

2. Create the given network shown in Figure 2 and determine whether each
connections function in Copper Cross-over cable and the Straight-through cable.
Record your observations on the space provided in each cabling.

1. Router – PT to Switch – PT:


i. Click on the Router – PT (Router0) and choose the Fast Ethernet0/0
interface. Then, drag the connection to the Switch – PT (Switch0)
and choose the Fast Ethernet0/1 interface.
ii. Click the Router – PT and a box shown in the Figure. Click on the
Config Tab and under Interface, click on the Fast Ethernet0/0 button.
Check the “On” on the Port Status and the “x” button on the upper
right corner of the box to close it.

2. Switch – PT to Switch – PT
i. Click on the Switch – PT (Switch0) and choose the Fast Ethernet1/1
interface. Then, drag the connection to the Switch – PT (Switch1)
and choose the Fast Ethernet2/1 interface.

3. Switch – PT to Hub – PT
i. Click on the Switch – PT (Switch1) and choose the Fast Ethernet0/1
interface. Then, drag the connection to the Hub – PT (Hub0) and
choose the Port0 interface.

4. Switch – PT to Server – PT
i. Click on the Switch – PT (Switch0) and choose the Fast Ethernet2/1
interface. Then, drag the connection to the Server – PT (Server0) and
choose the Fast Ethernet0 interface.
ii. Repeat the procedure above using Fast Ethernet3/1 (for Server1).

Observation:

5. Hub – PT to PC – PT
i. Click on the Hub – PT (Hub0) and choose the Port1 interface. Then,
drag the connection to the PC – PT (PC0) and choose the
FastEthernet0 interface.
ii. Repeat the procedure above using Port2 (for PC1).
