WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Science 7, Quarter 3, Week 3

Analyzing One Dimensional Motion Using Tape Chart and Motion Graph

Name______________________________________________ Section:_____________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

Create and interpret visual representation of the motion of objects

such as tape charts and motion graphs (S7FE-IIIb-3)

Learning Objectives:

1. Distinguish between the relationship of the variables on a graph.

2. Describe how graphs are used to analyze the motion of an
accelerating object.
3. Explain the relationship between the slope of the line on a position-
time graph and velocity.
4. Explain the relationship between the slope of the line on a
velocity-time graph and acceleration.
5. Draw a graph that shows the object is accelerating, constant, and
decelerating.

Time Allotment: 5 days

Key Concepts

 In the previous lesson, you learned to describe the motion of an object

in terms of distance or displacement, speed or velocity, and
acceleration. In addition, you learned to differentiate quantities in
terms of magnitude and direction.
 In these activity sheets, you will be describing motion using a tape
chart or motion diagram and motion graph. This diagram is also
called dot diagram or oil drop diagram.
 The object's position that changes during the time interval is
represented by the distance between dots on a dot diagram. A long
distance between dots shows that the object moves fast during that
time interval. A short distance between dots means the object moves
slow during that time interval.

 A body moving either at a constant velocity or accelerating can be
analyzed in a dot diagram. A changing distance between dots shows
a changing velocity, hence, accelerating while an unchanging or
same distance between dots represents a constant velocity and
therefore no acceleration. Below are some examples of a dot
diagram in a strip.

     
Figure 2. faster, constant velocity, no acceleration

     
Figure 3.moving faster or speeding up, changing velocity, has
acceleration

Cutting the strips at each dot and pasting them on a graphing paper
to form a tape chart will show the motion of the object.

Activity 1. Come, See and Discover the Truth

Direction: Read the whole story carefully.

A team of policemen was tasked to investigate a hit and run case. A

CCTV camera installed nearby captured the entire incident. An old woman
who tried to cross the road was the victim. During the investigation, the
driver of the car explained that he was then driving very slowly at constant
velocity. However, when the policemen viewed the scene on the camera
repeatedly, they noticed that the car left oil spots on the road. When they
checked these spots on the actual site where the incident took place, they
found out that they were still evident. Supposing that you were in the team,
how will you apply your learning to investigate the motion of the car of the
suspect to check whether the driver was telling the truth or not? Use the
activities below to discover the truth.

What you need:

Ruler, Graphing paper, Pen, Paste, scissors

What to do:

Direction: Copy the dot diagram in Activity 1.1 using a pen and a ruler. Cut
out the strip at dot using a pair of scissors. Paste them side by side to form
a tape chart as shown below:

Rubric for scoring of a self-made tape chart:

10 points-all are accurate, pasted neatly, cut correctly

8 points- 4 tapes are accurate, pasted neatly, cut correctly
6 points- 3 tapes are accurate, pasted neatly, cut correctly
4 points- 2 tapes are accurate, pasted neatly, cut correctly
2 points- 1 tape is accurate, pasted neatly, cut correctly
Rubric for scoring the answers:

1 point- The response is not correct.

3 points-The response is partially correct.
5 points-The response is correct, very insightful and detailed.

 Similarly, if the distances or velocities covered as the time elapsed are

to be entered into a graph to create a motion graph, you can interpret
the motion of the object.
 When a graph is plotted in terms of a distance travelled and the time
it took to cover such distance, the graph can be called distance-time
graph. However, if the graph is plotted in terms of displacement and
time, it is referred to as displacement-time graph. The velocity-time

 In a body moving at a uniform or constant speed or velocity, the graph

is a straight line. The slope of this line is equal to the average speed
or velocity of the body, which is

 The numerical value of the slope is the magnitude of the speed or

velocity and the sign of the slope gives direction of the motion of the
object (body) in relation to velocity.
 However, a curved line is formed when you plot the displacement
against time for a body moving at changing velocities but if you plot
the velocities against time, a straight line is formed. The slope of
this line is equal to the acceleration of the body, which is

 The numerical value of the slope is the magnitude of the

acceleration and the sign of the slope gives direction.
