SANGEET FUNCTION-NIGHT
Amrita is dressed in a simple traditional gown and
is standing at the parking and is on a call.

AMRITA
Rasna enterance pe aa,acha Mittu
ko bhej. Main akeley toh nahi
aoogi dekh..hmm jaldi.

Amrita checks her hair and dress. She lifts her head high
and walks towards the entrance. She looks at the uncles
standing at the entrance wearing suit coat and safa. They
are bowing and greeting the guests. She gets uncomfortable
seeing them. Mittu,23 comes outside and looks around,
fixes his gaze at Amrita. He is a lean boy with spects and
is short with an height of 5’5. He is wearing a suit coat.
He smilingly waves at Amrita and asks her to come. She
gestures him to walk to her. Then both of them walk
towards each other.

MITTU
Chalo chalo..
AMRITA
Kesa hai tu?

They both start walking towards the entrance.

MITTU
MAST! aap?
AMRITA
(imitating mittu)
MAST! Wese sonu kee shaadi hai
isiliye aayee main, warna mann
hee nahi tha. sonu se milke chali
jaoogi.

MITU
par mazza aa raha hai didi.
They have now reached the uncles at the entrance. The
uncles are standing on the both sides in a line. Amrita
gives them a fake smile and tries to walk faster. Mittu
also smiles but genuinely. On seeing the 4th uncle from
the left, her fake smile also vanishes but she quickly
puts it back. She whispers to Mittu.
AMRITA
Chal jaldi chaltey hai..
He understands and they try to walk faster. But she hears
her name being called.

UNCLE
Beta Amrita!
Amrita stops, does ’psch’ and turns around. The man,
around 55, had small white hair popping out of his safa.
He was short with an height of 5’5. He seemed fit but aged
with some wrinkles. She becomes a little hesitant and too
much respectful.
AMRITA
Badey papa! maine dekha nahi. ye
Mittu ke baato mein. Namastey.
Mittu gives a blank look at her.
BADEY PAPA
Aur, kese ho beta?
AMRITA
achi hoo badey papa..
He puts his warm hand on her shoulder.

BADEY PAPA
Aur kaam wagarah sabh theek
haina?

AMRITA
haa sabh theek hai.
BADEY PAPA
chalo jao andar, sabh hai..badi
mummy, teri mummy, daadi.

AMRITA
haa haa...
MITTU
papa, aap bhi chalo..itni kya
duty dena.
BADEY PAPA
nahi beta..jaoo..
Badey papa gets a little irritated and gestures them to go
in. And they walk further.
There are some ladies dancing on the stage on an old hindi
melodramatic song. It was a grand set up and Mittu leads
her to a round table which was already occupied by 2
ladies both around 45 to 48yrs old, 1 older woman around
75, 2 younger woman from which one had a child. While
walking towards the table, Mittu picks up a chair of the
other round table on the way. He puts it at their round
table. Amrita looks at the group, gulps and goes close to
them. She smiles at everyone. Everybody looks at her and
react excitedly.

One of the ladies, aged 48 wearing a sober saree gets up

to hug Amrita and makes her sit. She is Amrita’s Badi
mummy.

BADI MUMMY
Amrita beta, kesa hai tu?
AMRITA
Achi hoo badi ma, aap kese ho?

BADI MUMMY
(just the way mittu did)
MAST! Aaja beth.
Amrita looks at everyone and greets each one, everybody
smile and greet back. They parallely do not want to miss
the dance performance, so they look back. The anchor
announces a couple performance. Amrita looks at the other
lady beside whom she sat. The lady did not show much
interest. Amrita finds it wiered. She bends and whispers
in the ladies ears.

AMRITA
Kya hua ma?
The lady doesnt respond and ignores. Amrita gets shocked.
She notices that Mittu is watching all this. She enquires
Mittu as to what has happened. He just nodes that he
doesnt know. Amrita bends back to enquire again.
AMRITA
Ma, kya hua? main nahi aana tha
kya?

AMRITA’S MOM
hamarey saath aajati. aise alag
aana acha lagta hai kya?
AMRITA
ma..
AMRITA’S MOM
abhi aagyee na, bas chup reh.
saath mein waapis chalna.

This angers Amrita. Amrita’s daadi is sitting beside her.

She holds Amrita’s shoulder and turns her around. Amrita
puts up a smile for her daadi. Her daadi sweetly rubs
Amrita’s cheeks and then grabs her little tight to check
something. Amrita finds it a little painful. One more
aunty comes at the table to talk to them but stands there
watching the couple on stage being leg pulled by the
anchor.
DAADI
jhuliya toh nahi aayee abhi tak.

AMRITA
daadi, kuch bhi karey ho.
Amrita releases herself. She gets even more irritated. The
couple performance is been applauded.

BADI MUMMY
bohot sundar jodi hai, very much
made for each other. Real mein
bohot understanding hai dono
mein.

This makes Amrita’s mom uncomfortable. The anchor asks the

couple to propose each other again. Everybody hoots.
THE HUSBAND ON THE STAGE
(Bowing his head to his wife
and giving her a heart
balloon)
I love you now and forever
Everybody claps. Amrita gets a little shocked come
surprised by that gesture. Rasna who is around 24 yr old
is among the Amrita’s family on the table. She gets
excited on hearing that. She turns to Amrita’s badi ma and
whispers to her something. To which Badi ma shus her and
looks at Amrita. Amrita notices that and internally
knowing what it could be she enquires Rasna who is sitting
opposite.
AMRITA
Rasna, kya hai?
THE LADY WHO HAD COME TO THEIR TABLE
Aap long dinner kijiye pls. Ayiye
na.
BADI MUMMY
Haaji haaji zaroor..aap takleef
na lijiye.

AMRITA
Rasna, bol na..secret? badi ma ye
kya bol rahi thi?

BADI MA
(getting confused whom to
talk)
Kuch nahi beta. Wese bhabhiji ye
decoration toh bohot acha hai.

AMRITA
jaanti hoo main badi ma. Rasna
you can tell openly kee Deepesh
ne bhi mujhey aise hee meri
sangeet mein propose kiya tha.
need not laugh.

RASNA
(gets defensive)
di, mainey aisa kuch nahi socha
ya bola..

AMRITA
Open hoke bolna..
RASNA
Di, please. utna kuch nahi kiya..

AMRITA
Cummon ya, jabh mujhey nahi lagra
bura toh aap sabhko kyu lagra
itna bura.

Everybody on the table is seeing them. Everybody becomes

silent. Amrita gets even more irritated. The lady takes a
leave with a gossip news.
AMRITA’S MOM
Kisiko kuch problem nahi hai, tum
kuch bhi sochri ho. abh chup
betho.
AMRITA
sabh main hee karti hoo na.

DAADI
hey ma, isko byaa karado phirse,
ye sabh jhanjhat kamm hojayege.
phirse ghar bas jayega toh khush
rahigi.

Amrita walks off. Others on the table look at each other,

some even look at daadi angrily. Finally Mittu gets up and
walks towards Amrita. The rest do not act overly, as if
they are used to it. The young lady of 30 with the child
consoles Rasna.

Mittu stops Amrita who is almost at the enterance.

AMRITA
Un sabhko mujhse problem hee kya
hai?

MITTU
nahi hai dee..
AMRITA
divorce ke baad se isiliye inke
saath nahi rehna chahti thi main.
Kuch minutes mein hee aise
kardiye mere saath. Oh god, ye
long nahi badlegey zamaney ke
saath.

MITTU
dee pls, aap kyu over sochre, koi
wesa nahi..

A man around 52 comes to them who is tall, with a buldging

tummy and dyed hair walks to them. Mittu becomes quiet
seeing him. Amrita looks at the man and tries getting
normal.
AMRITA
papa..
AMRITA’S PAPA
jaari ho ya abhi aayee...saath
mein chalo. aise akele aaye wesa
math jao.

Amrita wanted to say a no, but couldnt. Her father holds

her around her shoulder and takes her in.
RASNA
Deepesh jiju ne bhi aise kiya tha
na.
people recall amritas maaraige and correct ir like phirse
hoga. etc etc.

seemed to be reserved with duppattas, hankies, bags and a

sleeping child. Only one girl, Rasna around 24 was sitting
there. Amrita is greeted by a hug by the girl. Amrita gets
happy seeing her. The three of them settle down on the
chairs. Amrita looks at the sleeping child.

AMRITA
Ladoo kitna bada hogaya?
MITTU
Arey rehendo, irritate hojata hai
usko sambhalna.

AMRITA
Rasna, kesi hai?
RASNA
theek thaak didi. bore hora.

AMRITA
kaun kaun aaye?
MITTU
sabh! mummy, chachi, daadi,
Rasna didi, nikita bhabhi, papa,
chacha...aur ye ladoo.. Bas
Vishnu bhaiya late ayengey...

On hearing this Amrita gulps a little. She looks

around and starts feeling that everybody is looking at
her. She looks at the stage. The ladies are busy doing
rituals on the stage while talking to each other in
excitement for what so ever reasons. She looks at the
bride.
AMRITA
Monu kee shaadi hai isiliye
aayee..warna mann nahi tha.

MITTU
Apna family pack isiliye aaya
taaki Rasna didi kee shaadi mein
ye long aaye. Wese didi secret
suno, Rasna ke liye joh ladka
dekhre na wo banda bhi yaha hai,
toh chupke dekhne!
Rasna gets embarrassed hearing this. Amrita is shocked.
AMRITA
What? ye long bhi na...
Amrita feels a hand on her shoulder. She turns around to
see her Daadi. Her Daadi is an aged lady of 75, lean,
hunched, needs support by walking and is wearing a dull
sober color saree with beads border. The Daadi was
supported by a lady close to Amrita’s age and was wearing
a bright saree.
DAADI
aagayee MADAM.

Amrita gets up and gives her the seat to her Daadi. She
smiles at the supporting her Daadi. Amrita pulls another
chair to sit beside daadi.
DAADI
beth beth.
NIKITA BHABHI
Kese ho di?
The lady is Amrita’s Bhabhi married to her cousin who is
almost the same age as Amrita. Bhabhi doesnt even wait for
Amrita’s answer and sit on another chair.
Daadi gestures Amrita to sit and takes her hand. She puts
her hand on Amrita’s face, initially sweetly pulling her
cheeks and then tightly holds it to see something.

AMRITA
daadi...! dukhra. Chodo

DAADI
jhuliya toh nahi padi. acha hai.
AMRITA
Bha...kya hai ..? psch.

All the ladies are getting down the stage and so does the
bride. Amrita takes her hand off from Daadi and sits
irritatingly. Her Daadi is also annoyed by this.
DAADI
gussa toh abhi bhi wesa
hai..psch..psch..psch
Two ladies come at the table talking to each other about
the mistakes in the rituals on the stage. They look at
Amrita. Amrita looks back at them and gives a fake smile.
Both of them quickly smile back.
BADI MUMMY
Arey Amrita, aagayee tu.

Both the ladies sit on the empty chairs. Amrita is looking

at the other lady who is not concerned to look at Amrita.
BADI MUMMY
Sonu poochri thi tere liye, ja
ussey mil le.

DAADI
nahi nahi..baad mein mil. Wa
chori ko byaah horo...
AMRITA
daadi..isiliye toh miloogi
DAADI
Tu koni samjhey...main boli na...
abhi math ja athey.

AMRITA
Sabh samajh aara daadi, aana nahi
chahiyeh tha mujhey.
The lady who wasnt talking to Amrita now looks at Amrita.
She is Amrita’s mom who is wearing a bright color saree
and with slight make up. She has dyed her hair completely
and has a nice flower on her head.
AMRITA’S MOM
Amrita, daadi se aise kyu baat
kar rahi ho?
AMRITA
abha mummy, jabse baat karna nahi
hua, abhi daant bhi rahi ho.

Suddenly a lady interferes.

THE LADY
Khaana kha lijiye. sabhi long,
please aayiye.

Everybody nods in agreement with a smile. The lady sees

Amrita.
THE LADY
Beta, tu kabh aayee..dikhi nahi
pehle.

AMRITA
Haa kaakiji main abhi aayee..
THE LADY
Acha..haa na main toh bhool bhi
gayee..tu toh door rehti
haina..darr nahi lagta beta
akele.
Amrita just smiles at it. The aunty again gestures
everybody on the table to eat and leaves. Mittu gets up.

MITTU
Chalo..
Everybody gets up except for Amrita. She is still
irritated. Her mother comes close to her.
AMRITA’S MOM
dekh tu hamarey saath aajana tha,
abhi aise alag alag aana acha
lagta kya. Mujhey wohi acha nahi
laga.
AMRITA
(Still in a dull mood)
Mom aap jao khaney. Main monu se
milke hee aoogee.

Amrita looks angrily at Daadi.

AMRITA’S MOM
Beta sune, daadi ko bas darr hai
kee koi tere divorce ke baarey
mein tujhsey galat baat na karey.
Abh unka mann rakhle, baad mein
jabh koi nahi tabh ja. Abh uske
sasuraal waley bhi hai.
Amrita is not able to take that. She just takes in deep
breath and leaves with her mom.
