ACTIVITY ONE
Roger Federer:

(Basel, 1981) Swiss tennis player. Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981 on the
banks of the Rhine, in the capital of the canton of Basel, on the mark that separates
Switzerland from Germany. Son of Lynette and Robert Federer, she South African, he Swiss,
his father, until she became his manager, he made a good living as a representative of some
pharmaceutical laboratories.
Roger grew up in a farming and ranching environment, however, on the outskirts of
Basel. Hence, he is a simple guy, who does not feel comfortable among executives in suits
and briefcases.
He grew up with the image in his memory of two great champions at the All Tennis
Club, Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker, when he watched the 1989 Wimbledon final on
television. He grabbed his first racket at age eight, but football and ice hockey kept him
undecided until he was fourteen, when he joined the Swiss Tennis Federation, where he had
a really bad time because he was subjected to intense surface preparation on land.
In 1998, when he was only seventeen years old, he made his debut as an ATP
professional. That year he played only five games, but finished at number 302 in the ranking,
which in a single year had advanced 398 places. The following year can be considered the
one of the authentic debut of him in the world-wide circuit, because he already played several
important tournaments, among them Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Miami and Monte Carlo.
With the 1999 season over, he went on to occupy number 64 in the ATP. The year 2000 was
also one of learning, especially looking in the mirror of his modern idol, Pete Sampras,
although the Swiss is a more versatile player because he adapts better to all types of surfaces,
including dirt.
On September 13, 2004, he officially became the champion of the ATP Race of
Champions, a classification in which he scored his performance in the most important
tournaments of the year. Since the creation of the Open era in 1968, he was the tennis player
who reached the first place of this classification sooner.
At the end of 2003 Federer broke up with his coach, because he was convinced that
he did not need a technical coach: “When I'm on the court I play, not him. I learned so much
that I felt prepared to fend for myself, and therefore I only use a friend as a sparring partner,
"he said. On his part, Lundgren commented, "He spent his days playing the PlayStation, and
when something went wrong, he couldn't control his anger."

On his trips around the international circuit, he is accompanied by his parents and his
girlfriend, the former tennis player of Slovak origin Miroslava Vavrinec, who is in charge of
relations with the press. In 2003 he also broke with the powerful IMG organization to create
his own company (RF), made up entirely of his family and friends who make up his
environment, and which debuted on the market with the fragrance «RF-Roger Federer ».
