Biography of Tennis Stars

1. Roger Federer
Is a Swiss professional tennis player who is
currently ranked world No. 2 in men's singles tennis by
the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) as of
2018. Federer has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles—
the most in history for a male player—and has held
the world No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a record
total of 309 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive
weeks. After turning professional in 1998, he was
continuously ranked in the top ten from October 2002
to November 2016. He re-entered the top ten following
his victory at the 2017 Australian Open.
Federer has won a record eight Wimbledon titles, a joint-record six Australian Open titles, a
record five consecutive US Open titles, and one French Open title. He is one of eight men to
have captured a career Grand Slam. Federer has reached a record 30 men's singles Grand
Slam finals, including 10 in a row from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships to the 2007 US
Open. Federer has also won a record six ATP Finals, 27 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles,
and a record 20 ATP World Tour 500 titles. Given these achievements, many players and
analysts consider Federer the greatest tennis player of all time.
Federer's all-court game and versatile style of play involve exceptional footwork and shot-
making. Effective both as a base-liner and a volleyed, his apparent effortlessness and efficient
movement on the court have made Federer highly
popular among his fans. He has been voted by his peers
to receive the tour Sportsmanship Award a record
thirteen times and voted by fans to receive the ATP
Fans' Favorite award for fifteen consecutive years.
Federer has been named the Swiss Sports Personality of
the Year a record seven times. He has been named
the ATP Player of the Year and ITF World
Champion five times, and he has won the Year award a
record five times, including four consecutive awards
from 2005 to 2008. He is also the only individual to have
won the Year award four times.

Family
Federer is married to former Women's Tennis Association player Miroslav Vavrincová. He
met her while they were both competing for Switzerland at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Mirka
had retired from the tour in 2002 because of a foot injury, seven years before she married
Federer. They were married at Wenkenhof Villa in Riehen near Basel on 11 April 2009,
surrounded by a small group of close friends and family. In 2009, Mirka gave birth to
identical twin girls. The Federer had another pair of identical twins in 2014, this time boy.

2. Rafael Nadal
Is a Spanish professional tennis player, currently
ranked world No. 1 in men's singles tennis by the
Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Known as
"The King of Clay", he is widely regarded as the
greatest clay-court player in history. Nadal’s evolution
into an all-court threat has established him as one of
the greatest tennis players of all time. Nadal has won
17 Grand Slam singles titles, a record 32 ATP World
Tour Masters 1000 titles, a record 20 ATP World Tour
500 tournaments, and the 2008 Olympic gold medal in
singles. In majors, Nadal has won 11 French Open
titles, 3 US Open titles, 2 Wimbledon titles, and one Australian Open title. He was also a
member of the winning Spain Davis Cup team in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2011. In 2010, he
became the seventh male player in history and youngest of five in the Open Era to achieve
the Career Grand Slam at age 24. He is the second male player, after Andre Agassi, to
complete the singles Career Golden Slam. In 2011, Nadal was named the Laureus World
Sportsman of the Year.
Rafael Nadal was born in Manacor, Balearic Islands, Spain. His father, Sebastian Nadal, is a
businessman who owns an insurance company as well as a glass and window company,
Vidres Mallorca, and manages his own restaurant, Sa Punta. His mother is Ana Maria Parera,
a housewife. He has a younger sister named María Isabel. His uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, is
a retired professional footballer, who played for RCD Mallorca, FC Barcelona, and
the Spanish national team. Nadal supports football clubs Real Madrid and RCD
Mallorca. Recognizing that Nadal had a natural talent for tennis, another uncle, Toni Nadal,
a former professional tennis player, introduced him to tennis when he was three years old.
At age eight, Nadal won an under-12 regional tennis championship at a time when he was
also a promising football player. This made Toni Nadal intensify training, and at that time he
encouraged Nadal to play left-handed for a natural
advantage on the tennis court, as he noticed Nadal
played forehand shots with two hands. When Nadal
was 12, he won the Spanish and European tennis titles
in his age group and was playing tennis and football all
the time. Nadal's father made him choose between
football and tennis so that his school work would not
deteriorate entirely. Nadal said: "I chose tennis.
Football had to stop straight away."
When he was 14, the Spanish tennis federation
requested that he leave Mallorca and move
to Barcelona to continue his tennis training.

3. Simona Halep
Halep's father, Stere, runs a cheese and milk factory.1
Simona started playing tennis at age four, emulating
her older brother.2 She describes herself in her play
style as "an aggressive in the baseline, " while in 2010,
before his international success, The New York Times
columnist Michael Kimmelman described her as" a
rudimentary player from Romania, short but with
powerful background hits and a great talent ". In a post-
match interview with Serena Williams at Wimbledon
2011, the American tennis player commented that
Halep" serves well for his height ... He has a lot of
power in his service ".

Is a professional tennis player who currently occupies the number 1 position of the WTA?
Halep holds 16 WTA singles titles, as well as 6 singles titles and 4 ITF doubles titles. On
October 9, 2017 she became the number one player in the WTA ranking, she is also the
Romanian tennis player with the highest ranking in the Open Era, while on May 15, 2017
she reached her highest position in doubles, when she reached the age of position number 71.

In June 2008, she won Roland Garros in the women's singles category, defeating her
compatriot Elena Bogdan in the final, becoming the second Romanian tennis player, after
Mariana Simionescu (champion of Roland Garros junior female in 1974), in to win a Grand
Slam in that category and the third tennis player in his country, to win a female Grand Slam,
both as a professional and junior, after the aforementioned and Virginia Ruzici, who achieved
it professionally, also in Roland Garros, in the 1978 edition.

At a professional level, Simona won the Roland Garros


Tournament in 2018.

In 2013, she won her first 6 WTA titles, achieving a


feat that had not been achieved since Steffi Graf won
her first 7 titles in 1986. This earned her the Best Player
of the Year Award WTA season, being the second
Romanian tennis player to obtain such recognition. In
the years 2014 and 2015, Halep won the Most Popular
Player of the WTA award. Since Wimbledon 2017, she
is the active tennis player who has remained in the Top 10 of the world ranking for the most
consecutive weeks.

4. Venus Williams
Williams was born in Lynwood, California, to Richard
Williams and Oracene Price.

Her talents were apparent at the age of seven when a


professional local tennis player named Tony Chesta
spotted Williams and quickly identified the talent.

Is an American professional tennis player who is


currently ranked world No. 9 in the WTA singles
rankings. She is generally regarded as one of the all-
time greats of women's tennis and, along with younger
sister Serena Williams, is credited with ushering in a
new era of power and athleticism on the women's professional tennis tour.

Williams has been ranked world No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association on three
occasions, for a total of 11 weeks. She first reached the No. 1 ranking on February 25, 2002,
the first African American woman to do so in the Open Era. Her seven Grand Slam singles
titles are tied for 12th on the all-time list, and 8th on the Open Era list, more than any other
active female player except Serena. She has reached 16 Grand Slam finals, most recently at
Wimbledon in 2017. She has also won 14 Grand Slam Women's doubles titles, all with
Serena; the pair are unbeaten in Grand Slam doubles finals. Williams also has two Mixed
Doubles titles. Her five Wimbledon singles titles tie her with two other women for eighth
place on the all-time list, but gives her sole possession of No. 4 on the Open Era List, trailing
only the nine titles of Martina Navratilova and the seven of Serena and Steffi Graf. From the
2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2001 US Open, Williams won four of the six Grand
Slam singles tournaments in that span. At the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, Williams
extended her record as the all-time leader, male or female, in Grand Slams played, with 75.
With her run to the 2017 Wimbledon singles final, she broke the record for longest time
between first and most recent grand slam singles finals appearances.
Williams has won four Olympic gold medals, one in singles and three in women's doubles,
along with a silver medal in mixed doubles, pulling
even with Kathleen McKane God free for the most
Olympic medals won by a male or female tennis
player. She is the only tennis player to have won a
medal at four Olympic Games. At the 2000 Sydney
Olympics, Williams became only the second player to
win Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles
at the same Olympic Games, after Helen Wills Moody
in 1924.

With 49 singles titles, Williams trails only Serena


among active players on the WTA Tour. Her 35-match
winning streak from the 2000 Wimbledon
Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament final is the longest since
January 1, 2000.

5. Serena Williams
Is an American professional tennis player.
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranked her
world No. 1 in singles on eight separate occasions
between 2002 and 2017. She reached the No. 1 ranking
for the first time on July 8, 2002. On her sixth occasion,
she held the ranking for 186 consecutive weeks, tying
the record set by Steffi Graf for the most consecutive
weeks as No. 1 by a female tennis player. In total, she
has been No. 1 for 319 weeks, which ranks third in the
Open Era among female players behind Steffi
Graf and Martina Navratilova. Some commentators,
players and sports writers regard her as the greatest
female tennis player of all time. On April 19, 2017, she announced a hiatus from tennis until
2018 because of pregnancy. Williams holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles,
and mixed doubles combined amongst active players. Her record of 39 Grand Slam titles puts
her 3rd on the all-time list and second in the Open Era: 23 in singles, 14 in women's doubles,
and 2 in mixed doubles. She is the most recent female player to have held all four Grand
Slam singles titles simultaneously (2002–03 and 2014–15) and the third player to achieve
this record twice after Rod Laver and Steffi Graf. She is also the most recent player to have
won a Grand Slam title on each surface (hard, clay and grass) in one calendar year. She is
also, together with her sister Venus, the most recent player to have held all four Grand Slam
women's doubles titles simultaneously (2009–10).
Her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles marks the record for the most Grand Slam wins by
a tennis player in the Open Era, and is second on the all-time list behind Margaret
Court (24). She is the only tennis player in history (man or woman) to have won singles titles
at least six times in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, and the only player ever to
have won two Grand Slams seven times each (7 Wimbledon titles and 7 Australian Open
titles). She is also the only tennis player to have won 10 Grand Slam singles titles in two
separate decades. She has won an all-time record of 13 Grand Slam singles titles on hard
court. Williams holds the Open Era record for most
titles won at the Australian Open and shares the Open
Era record for most titles won at the US

record for the most women's singles matches won at the
Grand Slams with 319 matches. Williams has won 14
Grand Slam doubles titles, all with her sister Venus,
and the pair are unbeaten in Grand Slam doubles

women's doubles grand slam titles, behind the 18 titles
of Natasha Verve (14 with Gigi Fernandez) and the
record 20 titles won by Martina Navratilova and Pam

6. Juan Martín del Potro
Is an Argentine tennis player who competes as a
professional since 2005.His best position in the ATP
ranking was the fourth one, achieved in January 2010,
January 2014 and June 2018.

He started playing tennis at age seven. In August 2008


he became the first player in the history of the ATP to
win four consecutive tournaments as a rookie. He also
achieved the second best winning streak in 2008 and the
second best winning streak among the teens in the Open
Era, both behind Rafael Nadal.

In 2009 he won the United States Open in singles, for what is the third Argentine tennis
player to achieve it after Guillermo Vilas and Gabriela Sabatini, and the fourth Argentinian
to win a Grand Slam in individual category after them two and Gaston Gaudio. As for
national representation, he has obtained two Olympic medals: in London 2012 he won the
bronze medal after beating Novak Đoković - becoming the first Argentine to achieve an
Olympic medal in men's singles - while in Rio de Janeiro 2016 won the silver medal losing
the final with Andy Murray. On the other hand, he is a member of the Argentine Davis Cup
team since 2007, a competition he won in 2016 (the first Davis won by Argentina) and was
runner-up in the 2008 and 2011 cups.

Del Potro had a rapid rise in the ATP ranking, reaching the Top 10 in 2008 at age 20 and
then ranked number 4 in 2010 at 21 years of age. However, he suffered from a wrist injury
that made him miss much of the 20106 season, so he dropped drastically in the ATP ranking.
In January 2014 he would again reach No. 4, but again the wrist injury would prevent him
from competing for almost the entire year 2014 and 2015, losing the option to reach the Top
3. Three times he went through the operating room to operate on tendonitis in the left wrist,
which took him out of the field for a long time and relegated to the position 1,045, the lowest
since he became a professional.7 However, he
surpassed all three operations with a rigorous therapy,
exercises before and after games and workouts, and
yoga, as a complement.
In 2009 he won the Olympia de Oro Prize for the best
Argentine athlete.8 In 2010 he won the Konex Diploma
of Merit Award as one of the five best tennis players of
the decade in Argentina. In 2011 he was named Return
of the Year by the ATP after starting the season at No.
484 and finishing at No. 11.

He also starred in the longest three-set best match of the


Open Era - four hours and twenty-six minutes - at the London 2012 Olympic Games, in the
loss to Roger Federer 6-3, 6-7 (5), 17 -19.

7. Dominic Thiem
He is an Austrian tennis player. His best position in the
ranking was # 4 achieved on October 6, 2017, while in
doubles he reached the 86th position on October 3, 2016.
He has managed to reach the fourth round of all the
Grand Tournaments. Slam, at the final of Roland Garros
and at the end of Masters 1000. It highlights his victories
over Rafael Nadal in Argentina 2016, Rome 2017 and
Madrid 2018; and about Novak Djokovic at Roland
Garros 2017; Roger Federer Roma 2016 and Stuttgart

At the beginning of the year, he qualified for Doha
(losing to Peter Gojowczyk in the first round), his first
Grand Slam in Australia (he won João Sousa in the first round, losing to Kevin Anderson in
2R) and in Rotterdam (beating Jarkko Nieminen in 1R, losing to Andy Murray in three sets
in the second); so he entered the Top 100 for the first time at No. 99 on February 17.

Then, in the month of March, it qualified for both the Masters of Indian Wells and the Miami
Masters. In the first conseguría to reach the third round after winning Daniel Kosakowski
and Gilles Simon (No. 23) in the first rounds in two sets. It would fall before Julien Benneteau
by 6-7 (3) and 4-6 in this round. In Miami he beat Lucas Rosol in the first round by 7-6 (6)
and 6-4, falling in second against Tommy Robredo by a tight 4-6 and 6-7 (8).

He then started his clay court season, receiving a wild card for the Monte Carlo Masters,
losing in the first round to Nicolas Mahut. In the Masters 1000 of Madrid he defeated the
Russian Dmitri Tursunov by 6-4 and 6-2 in the first round, and the world number 3 Stanislas
Waurika by 1-6, 6-2 and 6-4, in his first victory against a Top 10 player, qualifying for the
Round of 16, who finally would not dispute having to withdraw from the Tournament for
eating a food in poor condition.5
In the Roland Garros Tournament, he managed to advance to the second round, losing to
defending champion Rafael Nadal, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

In August, he reached his first ATP final in the Kitzbühel


tournament in his native country. He was defeated by
David Goffin in three sets. In the US Open he defeated
Ernests Gulbis, number 12 in the world, after which he
lost to Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.
Thiem is mainly an aggressive baseline player who is an
expert in defense as well. His background hits are solid
on both wings, with a powerful forehand and a tenacious
and powerful backhand with one hand. He is remarkably
one of the few young players on the circuit who uses a
one-handed backhand. According to Thiem, he changed
his famous backhand to one hand on the advice of his
coach.

8. María Sharapova
She is a professional tennis player and a Russian model.
Winner of the four open Grand Slam, Maria Sharápova
has occupied the number 1 ranking of the WTA for 21
weeks.2 Currently is the No. 28 in the World in the
ranking of the WTA.

Sharapova has won five individual Grand Slam titles so


far: Wimbledon 2004, United States 2006, Australia
2008 and Roland Garros 2012 and 2014. She also won
the WTA Tour Championships 2004 and was a finalist in
2007 and 2012.

In total he has won 36 individual WTA titles, including 12 WTA Tier 1 titles. On the other
hand, he was a silver medalist in the individual tennis event at the 2012 Olympics.

In 2004, at the age of 17, she won her first Grand Slam after defeating Serena Williams in
the Wimbledon final by 6-1, 6-4.3 Two years later, in 2006, she won her second by defeating
in the final of the US Open 6-4, 6-4 to the Belgian and No. 2 of the world at that time Justine
Henin.4 In 2008, she won the first Grand Slam of the year after winning the Australian Open
final by 7 -5, 6-3 to the Serbian Ana Ivanović.5 In 2012, she obtains the title of Roland Garros
when beating the Italian Sara Errani by 6-3, 6-2 and thus achieving the Grand Slam of the
Race, being next to Serena Williams are the only active players who have achieved it. In
2014, he won his second title of Roland Garros, and the fifth Grand Slam Tournament of his
career; to win in the definition of the Romanian Simona Halep in three sets by 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Sharapova is considered one of the best players of her time, having achieved the Silver Slam
(the four Grand Slam tournaments and a silver medal in the Olympic Games) and being one
of the youngest to have won the Wimbledon championship.

Maria Sharapova is considered an icon of tennis and also


that of fashion, as she has modeled for several famous
designers and is the face of important brands.
On March 7, 2016, he announced that he tested positive
for anti-doping medication for meldonium.6 In this case,
he received a two-year sanction from the International
Tennis Federation in a statement released on June 8. of
2016.7 Sharapova announced that she would appeal the
decision.8 Sharapova appealed the initial two-year
suspension imposed by the Tennis Anti-Doping Program
in July, the appeal was granted and it was reduced from
two years to 15 months. He returned to the courts on April
26, 2017, contesting the Stuttgart tournament, where he would reach the semifinals. After
that he went through several injuries that prevented him from playing several months.

9. Alexander Zverev

Is a German tennis player of Russian descent. His highest


ranking at individual level has been ranked No. 3,
achieved on May 15, 2018. At the end of the 2015 season
in the 81st place in the world with only 18 years, was
awarded by the ATP as the youngest player in the Top
100. On October 17, 2016 he entered the top 20 with just
19 years and 5 months reaffirming his great future. In
2017 he won his first Masters 1000 in Rome that allowed
him to enter the top 10 for the first time in his career.

He is the younger brother of tennis player Mischa Zverev


(born 1987). The father, also called Alexander, is a former Soviet tennis player who competed
in the Davis Cup defending the Soviet Union and is the current coach of his son Alexander.
Begins in 2011 playing qualifying tournaments for youth tournaments sometimes
unsuccessful but entering the main tables in others.1 In January of 2012 he wins his first
youth tournament. It is done with a grade 4 tournament played in the UAE. In February he
again obtains another title, this time grade 5, in Oman.

In the year 2013 there is a notorious progression in his game and he starts to play the finals
of the most important tournaments. In April and May he won two tournaments, one Grade 1
and another Grade A such as the 18ème Open International Junior of Beaulieu-sur-Mer
played in France, and the 54 Bonfiglio Trophy played in Italy.

With great success he appears in the junior category Roland Garros Tournament, reaching
the final in what was his most outstanding performance so far. He loses in the final against
the Chilean Christian Garín.2 With these triumphs he manages to climb to No. 2 in the
combined junior ranking.

As the first seed, he played the US Open 2013


Junior category, where he was defeated in the semifinals
against the Croat Borna Ćorić by 6-4, 3-6 and 6-0.

But he takes revenge in the Australian Open 2014 junior


category where he gets the title, defeating American
Stefan Kozlov in the final by 6-3 and 6-0. Zverev has
become the third Teutonic to lift the title of the
Australian Open in the under-18 categories. After
Nicolas Kiefer did it in 1995 (ex world number 4) and
Daniel Elsner in 1997, little named in the professional
circuit.

10. Diego Schwartzman
Is a professional Argentine tennis player, trained in the
Nautical Club Hacoaj. Schwartzman reached his highest
ranking, No. 11 on June 11, 2018, and in doubles No. 69
in April 2015. He is part of the new generation of
Argentine tennis players born in the 90's, along with
Federico Delbonis, Guido Pella, Facundo Bagnis, Renzo
Olivo, and Nicolas Kicker. Among his most important
victories are wins against Top 10 players like Dominic
Them (No.7) at the 2017 Canadian Masters and Marin
Čilić (No.7) at the 2017 US Open.
His mother is called Silvana Daiez and his father Ricardo,
who owns a company. He started playing tennis at seven. Can speak Spanish and English He
has two brothers named Andrés and Matias and a sister named Natali. He is a fan of Boca
Juniors and his hobbies are playing the PlayStation and going to see Boca Juniors at the
stadium. Today he is in the 11th position of the ATP. He is nicknamed "Pique" because of
his relatively low stature for a tennis player. coach is Juan Ignacio Chela and Leonardo
Olguin. In singles, in 2018 he achieved his best ranking in 12th place, while in doubles his
best ranking was in 69th place in 20154
On December 5, 2016, a strong preseason was started, supervised by Martini no Orazi (who
worked with Juan Martín del Potro for more than seven years) and Juan Manuel Galvan
(physical trainer, among others, from the Bahiense Guido Pella). It was in Sports Lab, a high
performance center that works in Parque Norte; there began to develop athletic growth for
the coming season.
Schwartzman reached the third round of a Grand Slam at the 2017 Roland Garros
Tournament, where he faced Novak Djokovic. He managed to gain a 2-1 advantage in sets,
but eventually faded and Djokovic won in 5 sets.
At the Canadian Open the 25-year-old saved four match points to achieve a surprising 4-6,
7-6 (7), 7-5 reverse of third seed Dominic Them (No. 7 in the world), his first win over a
player in the top 10. As of mid-August 2017, he was leading the ATP tour by winning
percentage in return games (receiving) at 36 percent
(192/532), with Nadal in second place and Djokovic in
fourth place.

On September 1, he defeated the world No. 7, and fifth


seed, Marin Cilic in the third round to equal the biggest
victory of his career at the US Open 2017. On September
3, he beat the No. 20 of the world, and the 16th seed,
Lucas Pouille in the fourth round to reach his first
quarterfinal of his career. At 5'7 "(170 cm), Schwartzman
was the lowest Grand Slam quarter-finalist since Jaime
Yzaga, 5'7", at the 1994 US Open. Schwartzman said:
"It's not just for the big guys here."

11. Garbiñe Muguruza
Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco is the daughter of Spanish
José Antonio Muguruza, born in Azcoitia (Guipúzcoa), 7
and of the Venezuelan Scarlet Blanco.

After emigrating his father to Venezuela in 1978, Garbiñe


was born in Caracas on October 8, 1993, but soon moved
to Guatire (Miranda), where he began playing tennis at
age four in the company of his brothers Asier and Igor in
the "Mampote Tennis Club", located in Guarenas.9 When
he was six years old he moved to Barcelona (Spain),
where he was trained in the "Bruguera Tennis Academy",
by tennis player Sergi Bruguera, under the tutelage of
Alejo Mancisidor, among others .10 Since November 2015 his coach is Frenchman Sam
Sumyk.

It is currently represented by the IMG agency and its main sponsors are Adidas, Babolat,
Rolex, BBVA and Caser, becoming the first female ambassador of this bank worldwide.
Since May 2016, his official residence is in Geneva (Switzerland).

Is a Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player. Given that she has dual nationality (Spanish by
paternal and Venezuelan by birth) she chose to represent Spain to compete in the WTA
tournaments and be part of the Spanish Tennis Federation Cup Team of the ITF. Between
September 11 and on October 9, 2017 was the tennis player number 1 of the WTA ranking.

On June 4, 2016, she became champion of Roland Garros, the first Grand Slam of her career,
after defeating in the final Serena Williams, number one in the world, placing herself second
in the WTA world ranking. His best classification so far in singles was ranked number 3,
reached in October 2015, year in which he managed to reach the final of the Wimbledon
Championship. Two years later, in 2017, he managed to win the title, defeating Venus
Williams in the final.5 In the doubles classification he
reached number 10, reached on February 23, 2015. In his
