● The Wimbledon tennis tournament is the oldest tournament started in 1877.


● It has been held at the All England lawn tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, since
its inception and is managed by AELTC - All England Lawn Tennis Club.
● Chronologically it is the third Grand Slam tournament; succeeding Australian Open and French
Open and preceding the US Open.
● Wimbledon tennis is the only major tournament played on the grass court, since Australian
Open shifted to hardcourts in 1988.
● The Wimbledon tournament is traditionally held in late June and early July and takes over two
weeks.
● In 1876, the lawn tennis game was devised by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield.
● The First Wimbledon Gentlemen's Singles championship held in 1877 on July 9 was won by
Spencer Gore.
● In 1884, the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles was added in the competition and Maud Watson was
the first winner.
● Also, in 1884 the Gentlemen's Doubles championships and in 1913 the Ladies' Doubles and
Mixed Doubles events were added.
● No British man won the singles event at Wimbledon between Fred Perry in 1936 and Andy
Murray in 2013.
● No British woman has won Wimbledon ladies’ Singles since Virginia Wade in 1977. Although
the girls championship was won by Annabel Croft in 1984 and Laura Robson in 2008.
● Wimbledon consists of five main events, four junior events and seven invitation events.
● The Gentlemen's Singles champion gets a silver gilt cup and the Ladies' Singles champion is
felicitated with a sterling silver salver commonly known as the "Venus Rosewater Dish".
● The total Wimbledon Prize for the last conducted championship i.e Wimbledon 2019 tournament
was 2,350,000 pounds or sterlings.
