Dear Fellow members,

Hope you all are doing well!

We all have lived through the changes and challenges associated with Covid-19.It’s been over a year since we
have adopted to the new normal. ASHRAE Chandigarh Chapter has seamlessly catered to the members through
the knowledge transfer and insights to fight the battle against the covid-19. The digital platforms have created
the world a small place and helped the members with the new developments and researches happening in the
field of built environment across borders. ASHRAE Chandigarh Chapter has been the frontrunner in promoting
sustainability and the importance of appropriate ventilation systems indoor air quality through bimonthly
programs for professionals and several student specific programs and competitions.

At the onset of the new society year, I acknowledge the unwavering support and trust of our valued partners. We
look forward for great participation of all the members, which has helped us grow step by step. The newsletter
has been a catalyst in promoting several brands, who have partnered with us throughout the society year.

I wish each one of you safe and healthy days ahead.

Happy Reading!!

the operations of a building. During the last few years, the
concept of net zero energy building gained wide international
attention and likely to be the future acceptable design of the
buildings. The performance-based net zero energy building
design depends upon the climatic conditions, topography and
exact location of the building.

Various studies reveals that there are mainly three broad

design strategies for net zero energy building. First one
is passive design strategy consisting building envelope,
orientation, day lighting, wall, roof and fenestration.
Second is active design strategy involving energy efficiency
technologies for HVAC, lighting, controls, appliances and
equipment. Third is renewable energy generation through
on site solar photovoltaic, wind turbine and biomass power
generation. The main components to design net zero energy

bulletin
Several ASHRAE members, including members of the Epidemic
Task Force and Board of Directors, are part of a team of
scientists and engineers that co-authored an article published
in the journal Science titled A Paradigm Shift to Combat Indoor
Respiratory Infection. In it they suggest the rapid growth in
our understanding of the mechanisms behind respiratory
infection transmission should drive a paradigm shift in how
we view and address the transmission of respiratory infections
to protect against unnecessary suffering and economic
losses. They note that there is a great disparity in the way
governments address different sources of environmental
infection. What is acceptable for risk of airborne disease
transmission is unacceptable for food and water. They argue
that the means exist to greatly reduce indoor airborne
transmission through changes to requirements for ventilation,
filtration, air treatment, and indoor air quality monitoring and
call on ASHRAE and other standards writing bodies to consider
infection risk explicitly going forward. To read the full article
