Directions: List at least five (5) environmental issues in your community. Explain the
causes of those issues and how do you think these issues should be addressed. (50
pts.)

1. Air Pollution
Causes:
• Vehicle Exhaust Fumes. In city environments, the leading source of air pollution
is vehicle exhaust fumes.
• Fossil Fuel-Based Power Plants.
• Exhaust from Industrial Factories and Plants.
• Agricultural and Construction Activities.
• Natural Causes.

Solution: The most basic solution for air pollution is to move away from fossil fuels,
replacing them with alternative energies like solar, wind and geothermal. Producing
clean energy is crucial. But equally important is to reduce our consumption of energy by
adopting responsible habits and using more efficient devices.

2. Population Growth
Causes: Poverty is believed to be the leading cause of overpopulation. A lack of
education. It is also caused by a number of factors. Reduced mortality rate, better
medical facilities, depletion of precious resources are few of the causes which result in
overpopulation.

Solution: One of the most effective steps we can take to reduce our collective
environmental impact is to choose smaller family size, and empower those who can't
make that choice freely to do so. Also,
• Empower women.
• Promote family planning.
• Make education entertaining.
• Government incentives.
3. Waste Production
Causes: Wastes may be generated during the extraction of raw materials, the
processing of raw materials into intermediate and final products, the consumption of
final products, and other human activities. Residuals recycled or reused at the place of
generation are excluded.

Solution:
• Use a reusable bottle/cup for beverages on-the-go.
• Use reusable grocery bags, and not just for groceries.
• Purchase wisely and recycle.
• Compost it.
• Avoid single-use food and drink containers and utensils.
• Buy secondhand items and donate used goods.
• Shop local farmers markets and buy in bulk to reduce packaging.

4. Climate Change
Causes:
• Humanity’s increased use of fossil fuels
• Deforestation
• Increasingly intensive agriculture

Solution: Changing our main energy sources to clean and renewable energy. Solar,
Wind, Geothermal and biomass could be the solution. Our transport methods must be
aligned with environmental requirements and reduce their carbon footprint.

5. Lowered Biodiversity

• Causes:
• Destruction of Habitat
• Hunting
• Exploitation of Selected Species
• Habitat Fragmentation
• Collection for Zoo and Research
• Introduction of Exotic Species
• Pollution
• Control of Pests and Predators
• Natural Calamities

Solution:
• Government restrictions and policies.
• Education.
• Protection of species.
• Protection of habitats.
• Stop deforestation.
• Prevent overhunting and overfishing.
• Prevent species invasion.
• Stop pollution.
