The Brief:
You have been commissioned to create a printable booklet design. It should consist of designs and research made during the
Summer Project as well as further project development.

The goal of editorial design is to make publications attractive, visually interesting,

and easy to read. Good editorial design is cohesive, clear, and draws readers in.
Introduction to the project:
Investigate examples of different solutions from professional practitioners to show narrative, including booklets,
professional blogs and Instagram pages.
Generate ideas – think about size of the booklet, general layout, colour scheme, visual language elements – how your
Visual Summer Diary could be designed. Generate at least 3-5 different layout sketches and additional sketches for visual
language elements.
Take part in InDesign workshops.
Produce a plan/timetable for the project general concept, detailing tasks, responsibilities and associated timescales to
ensure deadlines are met for the client.
Develop your design for the Summer Visual Diary using Adobe InDesign tools. Complete annotation against planned
outcome as you go.
Submit your final design via Teams and present it to your group.
Complete summative evaluation.

The Brief:
You are asked to take part in the ARTiculation Prize – a nationally acclaimed
annual event designed to promote the appreciation and discussion of art. The
competition seeks to engage 16–19 year old students in further education,
regardless of background or experience with art and to develop their
confidence and ability to express their opinions, thoughts and conclusions. Each
student is invited to deliver a ten-minute presentation to an interested audience
about a work of art, design, artefact or architecture of their choice. Adjudicators
are asked to assess each presentation as a whole, looking at content, structure,
delivery and the speaker’s unique potential.

Introduction to the project:

The aim of the project is to engage with historical & contemporary art and
design, present research and outcomes to audiences, and draw contextual
understanding of the selected artwork or artist into your personal creative
respond. This will be done through two parts:
1. Participation in the Articulation Prize
2. Creation of artwork in response to your research
As part of the ‘ARTculation’ prize, you will identify an artwork, artefact or design
from your own area of interest, researching & engaging with it thoroughly. From
your initial research you will put together a presentation on the piece, which you
will present to your group, focussing on CONTENT, STRUCTURE &
DELIVERY.

You must consider & identify:

the name of the artist/designer, title of the piece & the year it was created;
the historical context of the piece (what was happening when the piece was
produced & does the piece comment on this? How does the piece fit into
Art/Design History as a whole);
the themes and ideas behind the piece and how are these communicated
(consider the use of the formal elements, as well as the use of materials,
techniques & processes).

Key presentation dates:

Group presentations: Bournemouth and Poole College, 24 and 25 January 2022
