Should Get Your Own Place

So, you’ve reached the point in your life where you could use a bit of independence and more
space for yourself. But the thing is, you’re not 100% sure whether or not you should move out
and get your own place or wait ‘til the time is “right” and stay where you are right now.

According to a survey, 63% of millennial respondents said they were extremely happy with their
present living situation because they have their own place, and the top reason they’ll consider
moving out is if it’s for a job opportunity, while some do it to beat the Metro Manila traffic.

Depending on the situation you’re in or the reason you’re moving out, consider asking yourself
these questions to further solidify your decision about getting your own place:

1. Do you have enough money saved or do you make enough to cover all your living
expenses?
This is almost a fundamental question when it comes to making big life decisions. It
sounds silly, but it’s one of the most important things you should consider before moving
out. If you’ve been saving up for years for this, then you’re on the right track and you
don’t have to worry much. But you also have to consider your current financial situation;
whether or not you have a stable job that allows you to make enough money to support
your lifestyle.

If you’ve saved enough and you have a stable income, then you’re almost set to hop
onto the next chapter of your life.

2. What is the reason you’re moving out?

So, you’ve decided you want to live on your own, but why exactly are you moving out?
Before you make this big life decision, you must carefully assess your reasons and make
sure you’re not doing it solely because of peer pressure. If that’s the case, and you’re
moving out for someone else, then maybe you have to rethink your decisions and
assess them.

Going back to the survey we presented at the beginning of this article, here are some of
the reasons respondents said they’d consider moving out:

● For a job opportunity - 33.41%

● To live in a facility with excellent amenities - 16.49%
● Just to beat traffic - 15.56%
● If it’s cheaper - 13.61%
● To be independent - 6.48%
● For a serious relationship or marriage - 5.54%
● A place with good surroundings - 3.6%
● If I found better people to live with - 3.24%
● If pets are allowed - 1.08%

As you can see, most respondents said they’d move out if it’s for a job opportunity or if it
makes living easier and more convenient for them. Meanwhile, it would also help if you’ll
be able to identify your reasons for moving out and consider weighing the pros and cons
before coming to an irreversible decision.

3. Does living with others distract you from pursuing your hobbies or interests?

In a traditional Filipino family, this conversation already seems taboo or unnecessary as

we’re used to living with our parents and siblings until we’re married or having our own
family. But the thing is, in today’s society, more millennials prefer living independently for
reasons we’ve identified in the previous paragraph.

In case you feel like your current living situation limits you from pursuing your interests
and hobbies, if you’ve done the first two steps, and you have faith that you’re capable of
supporting yourself, then there’s no reason you should hold back. However, there’s more
to this life decision than having saved enough money and identifying your reasons.

4. Are you emotionally, mentally, and physically prepared to move out and live on
your own?

Without a doubt, one must have ample time to prepare the body and mind for big life
changes, especially if it’s for the long term. It’s perfectly normal to feel nervous or
anxious if it’s your first time living on your own, which is why it’s crucial that you’ve
prepared yourself for this big transition before you push through with it.

If you can, you may settle your unresolved issues with your parents or family members if
it would make you feel more at peace with your decision. On a lighter side, if you and
your family are on good terms, you might want to schedule or plan your visits to maintain
communication, and assure them that you’re not moving out because you don’t want
their company, but because you think it's the best decision you can make for yourself at
the moment.

5. Have you considered the location, price point, facilities, and fees you need to
settle for your new place?
Finally, when you’ve answered the first four questions and you’re done assessing your
decision, it’s time to consider the place you’re moving into.

Will it make commuting easier for you? Is it accessible to all your lifestyle needs? Is the
price reasonable? Does it have excellent amenities and facilities? These are only some
of the things you must consider before moving into a new place. Luckily, there are
developers who have been in the industry for years and have proven their expertise in
the field. You can look into these developers and their projects to help you decide better.
