What is astonishing about this oratorio is its traditional style - the starting point of the work was a Berlioz falsifica- tion, a choral piece called "'L’Adieu des Bergers” which he performed as the composition of a certain Pierre Ducré, dated 1679. Other conspi- ‘cuous features are the size of the forces involved ~ extremely modest by Berlioz's standards — and the many instrumental intermezzos, one of which is the present Trio. It is entitled "Trio pour deux Fldtes et Harpe — Exéouté par des jeunes Ismaélites” (Trio for Two Flutes and Harp, played by the young Ismaelites), and it occurs in the third and last part of the oratorio, “The Arrival in S This edition is based on the Berlioz Complete Edition published by Mal- herbe and Weingartner in Leipzig in 1900.
