Chapter 11. SRS

1. Preface

To know the system components of SRS system.

Learning Goals To understand the handling caution and replacement items

for SRS system.

The SRS system for PB vehicle has an ACU supplied by ‘CONTIMENTAL’. This ACU system for PB car
is the first time in HMC vehicle as an optional device for airbag system.
This manual will cover the basic information such as the components, its location and some tips for
warning lamp activation.

2. Introduction

2.1. Precautions
- Especially when performing electrical inspection, always turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect
the negative terminal from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
- Do not install used SRS parts from another vehicle. Use only new parts which are manufactured to
the same standards as the original parts and quality when making SRS repairs.
- Do not attempt to disassemble and repair the airbag modules (DAB, PAB, SAB, CAB, BPT), clock
spring and wiring in order to reuse them. Once an airbag has been deployed, it can’t be reused.
- Do not perform electrical inspection to the airbags, such as measuring resistance. In case of necessity
resistance inspection to the airbags modules, you must use SST.
Note : Please refer to the shop manual for further information

a folded cushion and an inflator unit.
- PAB (Passenger Airbag): A passenger airbag module located in the passenger side crash pad which
contains a folded and an inflator unit.
- SAB (Side Airbag): Side airbags located in the front seats of the driver and passenger side contains
folded cushions and inflator unit.

Depending on the severity of crash and deployment logic applied, the ACU supplies firing current to the
driver airbag, passenger airbag, side airbag and pre-tensioner.

The above diagram briefly shows to the airbag systems that have a passenger airbag deactivation switch,
front and side impact sensors. The passenger airbag deactivation switch allows the driver to enable or
disable the passenger airbag. Front impact sensors measure the impact amount at the beginning of a
crash.

3.2. Airbag Thresholds

Under a must deploy condition, the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) will supply firing current to the squibs of the
belt pre-tensioners, driver and passenger airbag.
In case the vehicle is equipped with a passenger airbag deactivation switch set to “OFF” the passenger
airbag will not be deployed, the belt pre-tensioners of the passenger side will be fired in any case.
Following table shows the deployment condition for frontal and side airbag including of belt pre-tensioner.

3.3. Component Replacement After Deployment

- When the front airbag(s) deployed after a collision, replace the following items.
1) ACU
2) Deployed airbag(s)
3) Seat belt pre-tensioner(s)
4) Front impact sensors
5) SRS wiring harnesses
6) Inspect the clock spring for heat damage (If any damage found, replace the clock spring)

- When the seat belt pre-tensioner(s) deployed after a collision, replace the following items

1) ACU (If B1658 detected) ※ DTC (B1658): Belt pre-tensioner 6 times deployment.

268 Technical Training Team 1

Chapter 11. SRS

2) Seat belt pre-tensioner(s)

3) Front impact sensors
4) SRS wiring harnesses

※ In case of PA, between front airbags and pre-tensioners are deploying at the same time after a collision.

Therefore the above mentioned ‘6 times deploy of pre-tensioner’ may not happen under normal
condition but the certain faulty condition such as circuit failure in the frontal airbag module.

- When the side airbag(s) deployed after a collision, replace the following items
1) ACU
2) Deployed airbag(s)
3) Side impact sensor(s) for the deployed side(s)
4) SRS wiring harnesses

After the vehicle is completely repaired, confirm the SRS airbag system is OK (Turn the ignition switch ON,
the SRS indicator should appear for about 6 seconds and then go off)

3.4. ACU(Airbag Control Unit)

PA Car has a SIMENS Airbag Electronic Control Unit (ACU). The ACU is designed to handle the
“Depowered” functionality

Chapter 11. SRS

When a vehicle has crashed with a certain degree of frontal impact, the gas generator is made to ignite by
the electrical firing signal from ACU.
Gas from the gas generator causes movement of the piston in the manifold case (cylinder), which operates
a rack gear. Finally the webbing is retracted by the rotation of the spool. Therefore the seat belt pre-
tensioner helps to reduce the severity of injury to the front occupant by retracting the seat belt webbing to
prevent the occupant from moving forward and hitting the steering wheel or instrument panel when the
vehicle is crashed.

Purpose for Installation

The passenger’s front airbag can be deactivated by the passenger’s front airbag ON/OFF switch if a child
restraint is installed on the front passenger’s seat or if the front passenger’s seat is unoccupied by a
person. A Passenger Airbag Deactivation (PAD) switch is applied for the European market only.
The ACU shall be capable of sensing the following PAD switch statuses:

1) PAD switch in enable position

2) PAD switch is disable position
3) PAD switch instable
4) Open / Short to Battery
5) Short to Ground

4. Outputs

4.1. Airbag (SRS) Warning Lamp Operations

(Active fault or historical fault counter is greater or equal to 10)

cardiagn.com
(Normal or historical fault counter is less than 10)

During start-up phase, the warning lamp shall be commanded ON for 6 seconds (±5 %) and OFF for 1

second. Thereafter, the lamp shall be commanded ON only under the following cases:

1) Lamp latch condition

2) Qualified fault is present
3) During communication with service tool.

4.2. SRS Warning Lamp Activation and Latch

There are certain fault conditions in which the ACU cannot function and thus cannot control the operation
of the standard warning lamp. In these cases, the standard warning lamp is directly activated by
appropriate circuitry that operates independently of the ACU.

These cases are;

1) Loss of battery supply to the ACU: warning lamp turned on continuously.

2) Loss of internal operation voltage: warning lamp turned on continuously.
3) Loss of Microprocessor operation: warning lamp turned on continuously.
4) ACU not connected: warning lamp turned on continuously through the shorting bar

Lamp Latch condition that can not be cleared by the service tool:

1) 10 different external faults except Vbatt too low are qualified in the ACU.
2) A certain external fault except Vbatt too low has qualified 10 times in the ACU.

276 Technical Training Team 1

Chapter 11. SRS

3) Belt pre-tensioner only firing (less than 6 times)

4) Instability DTC for PAD switch.

Lamp Latch condition that can be cleared by the service tool:

1) Any internal DTC is qualified.

2) Belt pre-tensioner only firing (more than 6 times)
3) Any airbag deployment DTC is qualified.

4.3. Passenger Airbag Disable (PAD) Indicator Operation

The ACU is designed with circuitry and software to drive a PAD lamp, which is used for depowered airbag
system. For the PAD indicator circuitry to function properly, both the ACU and PAD indicator are sourced
from the some ignition line.
After ignition on, the PAD indicator will be turned on for 4 seconds and off for 3 seconds during the

cardiagn.com
initialization phase. Thereafter the lamp will be turned on as long as the PAD switch is in the disabled
position.

( PAD Lamp operation during Phase-up )

4.4. Crash Output

The required command mode implementation is high/low voltage level. When the fire decision is made by
ACU, crash output stays low voltage during 200ms like below.

(Crash Output Signal to ETACS)

The tolerance of low voltage is 200ms ±5%
