1 (a) For electro convection breakdown of transformer oil, derive in terms of M, , Vb and d.

[4]
, the symbols have their usual meanings.

(b) Now consider the derived equation of 1(a) for and for lighter oil, higher dielectric strength
and fixed insulation thickness, if the breakdown voltage needs to be increased, how should we
choose  and M? Also comment how V b is related to M and how V b is related to .
[4]
Note: No numerical substitutions but just implied larger or smaller value for the parameters.
(c) For a liquid transformer oil system, the oil has relative dielectric constant  = 3.65, density

= 2.49 g/cm3 and ionic mobility  = 3.15 ×10-5 cm2/V-s. If the applied voltage is 655 V and the
oil container’s top to bottom plate distance d = 2.16 cm, find the electro convection coefficient
M.
[6]

(d) If  changes by -3.7%,  changes by 5.33%,  changes by -6.44%, d

changes by 3.6% and M changes by 7.3% all with respect to values in 1 (c), what is the new
voltage V that needs to be applied between the top and bottom plates? Show the percent increase
or decrease in V compared to value in 1
(c). [6]
