and exhaust into a condenser at 0.1 bar, calculate the Rankine efficiency by
using only steam tables.

PART - I)
8. (a) What are the applications of nozzle ? 5
(b) A convergent-divergent nozzle is required to discharge 2 kg of steam per sec.
The nozzle is supplied with steam ati bar and 180 oC and discharge takes place
against a back of pressure at I bar. The expansion upto throat is isentropic and
the frictional resistance between the throat and exit is equivalent 63 kJ per kg of
steam. Taking approach velocity of 75 m/s and thrcat pressure of 4 bar,
estimate :
(i) suitable area for the throat and exit.
(ii) overall efficiency of the nozzle based on the enthalpv drop between the
actual inlet preszure and temperatllre and the exit pressute. 10

9. (a) Explain simple De-lavel turbine. 5


(b) The velocity of steam leaving the nozzle of an impulse turbine is 1200 m/s and
the nozzle angle is 20o ; the blade velocity is 375 m/s and blade velocity
coefficient is 0.75. Assuming no loss due to shock at inlet, calculate for a mass
flow of 0.5 kg/s and symmetrical blading : 10
(i) Blade inlet angle.
(ii) Driving force on the wheel.
(iii) Axial thrust on the wheel.
(iv) Power developed by turbine.
