Statics of Rigid Bodies

 Objectives:

▪ Establish a better understanding of the

components of the force.

▪ Solve problems on resultant of Concurrent Force

Systems using component method.
 Resultant of Concurrent Force System
-The resultant of a force system is defined to be
the simplest system that can replace the original
system without changing its external effect on a
rigid body.
Let:
R=Resultant
Rx=algebraic sum of all
forces along x-axis
Ry=algebraic sum of all
forces along y-axis
∠θ=direction of resultant
with respect to x-axis
ΣFx=Rx→+
Rx=F1x+F2x+F3x+F4x

ΣFy=Ry↑+
Ry=F1y+F2y+F3y+F4y

𝑅2 = 𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2

𝑅𝑦
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =
𝑅𝑥
 Problems:
▪ Four forces acting on a bolt A as shown,
determine the magnitude and the direction of the
resultant.
 Solution:
a. Solve for the components of each force.
b. Compute the total
horizontal force, Rx

ΣFx=Rx→+
Rx=F1x-F2x+F3x+F4x
𝑅𝑥
= 120𝑐𝑜𝑠30 − 80𝑠𝑖𝑛15 + 0
+ 100𝑐𝑜𝑠20

𝑹𝒙 = 𝟏𝟕𝟕. 𝟏𝟗𝑵 →
c. Compute the total
vertical force, Ry

ΣFy=Ry↑+
Ry=F1y+F2y-F3y-F4y
𝑅𝑦
= 120𝑠𝑖𝑛30 + 80𝑐𝑜𝑠15
− 110 − 100𝑠𝑖𝑛20

𝑹𝒚 = −𝟔. 𝟗𝟑𝑵 = 𝟔. 𝟗𝟑𝑵 ↓

d) Compute the resultant, R, by
Pythagorean Theorem and
direction, θ:

𝑅2 = 𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2
𝑅= (177.19)2 + (6.93)2
𝑹 = 𝟏𝟕𝟕. 𝟑𝟑𝑵

𝑅𝑦
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =
𝑅𝑥
6.93
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =
177.19
𝜽 = 𝟐. 𝟐𝟒°

∴ 𝑹 = 𝟏𝟕𝟕. 𝟑𝟑𝑵, 𝟐. 𝟐𝟒° 𝑺𝒐𝒇𝑬

 Problems:
▪ Two cables which have known tension are applied at point
B. A third cable used as a guy wire is also attached at point
B. Determine the tension in the third cable so that the
resultant of these three forces will be vertical.
 Solution:
▪ Note that Resultant is vertical, therefore
R = Ry
Rx = 0

▪ Required:
Tension T in the cable
Solution:
ΣFx=Rx→+
4
𝑅𝑥 = −4𝑐𝑜𝑠5 − 8𝑐𝑜𝑠25 + 𝑇( )
5

But 𝑅𝑥 = 0

4
0 = −4𝑐𝑜𝑠5 − 8𝑐𝑜𝑠25 + 𝑇( )
5
𝑻 = 𝟏𝟒. 𝟎𝟒𝑲
