Life is a gift that was given to us.

We live for a purpose so we shouldn’t waste the time

that was given to us. Our life is precious that we should treat as such. We should see our lives
as a responsibility because some circumstances that may happen in our life are depending on
our decisions and doings. The value of life is to enjoy everything that is coming to our lives
because of what the quote says “we only live once”. We should value our existence in this world
by providing ourselves a happiness and enjoyment. In able to commit with happiness we should
conquer all the struggles or challenges in our lives. Sharing about our problems to others is okay
but we should have a wise choice of people especially in our choice of friends that will comfort
and help us. Another value of life is to make friends with other people because I believe that no
one can be alone. In facing some difficulties in our lives, we need others to relieve our pain. In
our life we need friendship, love and unity. These will lead us to value our lives even more. That
is how I see the value of life.

In case of Cris Anthony Mendez, he suffered from a torture by his fraternity brothers.
Specifically he died because of traumatic injuries that are found in various parts of his body. It
was reported that hazing is the reason behind these injuries. According to a medico-legal
report, Cris sustained at least ten hematomas and on his autopsy findings, it showed that he got
bruises on his arms, shoulder, chest, knees and thighs. Blood clotting was also noted near his
spine and his lungs were also contused and hemorrhagic while the rest of his internal organs in
his abdominal area were markedly congested. Cris’ so-called fraternity brothers violated human
rights because of what they did which is a physical abuse and the worst is that they killed the
victim. Those criminals are not only violated the law of the country but also the law of God
which is the Ten Commandments wherein it is stated that we shall not kill. They do not have an
ethical behavior because of their wrongdoings. They even got no conscience on what they did
because no one surrendered and took responsibility of his death. Also, the so-called fraternity
brothers of Cris withhold him to have a longer life and achieve his dreams. Being his fraternity
brothers, they should develop brotherhood in a good way and nurture each other’s trust. But
with the circumstance that happened, they failed on establishing their brotherhood but instead
it became a murder case.

Honestly, when I hear fraternity, the one that first come in to my mind is torture
because I’ve heard news before about fraternity being involved in hazing or torturing and it
leads to death of someone. With this perspective of mine, some part of me believes that there
wasn’t any good about fraternities but then, when I searched more about it I’ve found out that
there’s still good in fraternities. Fraternities can expose students to a large network of
collegiate members and alumni that can help undergraduates transition successfully into
college life and help them find opportunities that will enhance their development. Although
some fraternities are life threatening, it can be also helpful for the students to have a social
interaction with their co-students or co-members. They can also develop academically as well
as theirselves as an individual. They could have a long lasting friendship and have fun while
engaging to different activities under their fraternal organization. However, despite of these
pros of fraternity, we should still be aware about the background of the fraternity that we are
planning to join with and careful in choosing the right fraternity groups for us to avoid any
unwanted circumstances.
