II. TYPES OF PROSE

Prose Definition
A. Prose Drama Prose drama is a form of writing that focuses on a
natural flow of speech to describe an exciting or
unexpected series of events. This type of writing does
not follow a metrical structure.
B. Essay Is prose non-fiction which is a formal treatment of an
issue written from the writer’s personal point of
view. Example: On the Indolence of the
Filipinos written by Jose Rizal.
C. Novel Is a very long prose narrative depicting complex
characterization and plot which is usually divided into
chapters. Example: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo,
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.
D. Short Story Is a short prose fiction narrative depicting a simple
characterization and plot conveying a moral which
can be read in one sitting. Example: The Diamond
Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Footnote to
Youth by Jose Garcia-Villa.
E. Biography Is a prose non-fiction detailing the life of a person
written by another person. Example: The Great
Malayan about the Life of Jose Rizal written by Carlos
Quirino.
F. Autobiography An autobiography is the story of one person's life,
written by that person. It is usually told in first-person
point of view and covers the author's entire life. Some
shorter versions of autobiographical works include
journals, diaries, letters, and memoirs.
G. Letter One of the marks that are symbols for speech sounds
in writing or print and that make up the alphabet
H. Diary Is a personal account of significant events that happen
in the life of a person.
I. Journal A serious magazine produced for professional people
or those with a particular interest. A
written record that you make of the things that
happen to you each day
J. Historical Prose Historical fiction is a literary genre where the story
takes place in the past. Historical novels capture the
details of the time period as accurately as possible for
authenticity, including social norms, manners,
customs, and traditions.
K. Scientific Prose The main function of scientific prose is to prove a
hypothesis, to create new concepts, to disclose the
internal laws of existence, relations between different
phenomena. The main aim of the scientific prose style
is to present precise information and to establish a clear
and logical progression of ideas.
L. Satirical Prose Satire is loosely defined as art that ridicules a specific
topic in order to provoke readers into changing their
opinion of it. By attacking what they see as human
folly, satirists usually imply their own opinions on
how the thing being attacked can be improved.
M. Current Publications Belonging to the present time in the action of making
something generally known.
N. Literary Criticism Literary criticism is the comparison, analysis,
interpretation, and/or evaluation of works of
literature. Literary criticism is essentially an opinion,
supported by evidence, relating to theme, style, setting
or historical or political context.
O. Book Review A book review is a thorough description, critical
analysis, and/or evaluation of the quality, meaning,
and significance of a book, often written in relation to
prior research on the topic.
P. Philosophy The term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a
broad sense, philosophy is an activity people
undertake when they seek to understand fundamental
truths about themselves, the world in which they live,
and their relationships to the world and to each other.
Q. Travelogue A travelogue is a truthful account of an individual’s
experiences traveling, usually told in the past tense
and in the first person.
R. Parody A parody takes a piece of creative work–such as art,
literature, or film–and imitates it in an exaggerated,
comedic fashion. Parody often serves as a criticism or
commentary on the original work, the artist who
created it, or something otherwise connected to the
work.
S. Anecdote Is a prose non-fiction narrative that depicts a single
incident in a person’s life. Example: The Moth and the
Lamp.
T. Character Sketch A character sketch is a brief description in prose of a
particular person or type of person. In writing one,
you go into the character's manner, distinct
characteristics, nature, and the way that person
behaves him or herself.
U. Parable Is a short prose allegorical narrative which presents a
philosophical outlook in life. Example: The Parable of
the Sower, The Prodigal Son.
V. Pamphlet An unbound printed publication with no cover or
with a paper cover.
W. Eulogy A commendatory oration or writing especially in
honor of one deceased.
X. Speeches The communication or expression of
thoughts in spoken words
1. Address To direct the efforts or attention of (oneself) will
address himself to the problem.
2. Oration An oration is a speech delivered in a formal and
dignified manner.
3. Lecture A speech read or delivered before an audience or
class, especially for instruction or to set forth some
subject
4. Talk To communicate or exchange ideas, information, etc.
5. Sermon A discourse for the purpose of religious instruction or
exhortation, especially one based on a text of Scripture
and delivered by a member of the clergy as part of a
religious service. any serious speech, discourse, or
exhortation, especially on a moral issue.

II. TYPES OF POETRY

Poetry Definition
Narrative Poetry
A. Epic Is a narrative poem which accounts the heroic exploits
of a community’s hero, usually involving superhuman
abilities. Example: Hudhod hi Aliguyon is an Ifugao
epic.
B. Metrical Romance Is a romance metrical tale of dodecasyllabic measure
which is recited during formal performances or
informal gatherings. Example: Florante at Laura by
Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar.
C. Metrical Tale Is a narrative poem which narrates a story in a
“metered” or “measured” number of syllables hence it
was called metrical.
D. Ballad Is a narrative poem which depicts a single incident
that transpired in a person’s life. It is usually recited
during gatherings in the past but it may be sung in the
present days. Example: Forevermore by Side A Band.
E. Metrical Allegory An extended metaphor in which the characters, places,
and objects in a narrative carry figurative meaning.
Often an allegory's meaning is religious, moral, or
historical in nature.
Lyric Poetry
A. Ode Is a lyric poem of noble and exalted emotion which
has dignified countenance. Example: Ode to the West
Wind by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
B. Elegy Is a lyric poem of sad theme such lamentation for the
dead, longing for a missing love, and a grief for things
beyond one’s control. Example: Elegy Written in a
Country Churchyard by Thomas Gray.
C. Song Is a lyric poem of various theme which is meant to be
sung in its entirety. Example: Bayan Ko written by Jose
De Jesus, arranged by Constancio De Guzman, and
sung by Freddie Aguilar.
D. Corridos Is a martial or adventure metrical tale of octosyllabic
measure which is recited for recreational
purposes. Example: Ibong Adarna by Jose Corazon dela
Cruz.
E. Sonnet Is a lyric poem of 14 iambic pentameter lines usually
about love and beautiful themes. Example: Sonnet to
Laura by Francesco Petrarch.
