Physics Experiment 1 Vector

1) The document describes an experiment using a Pasco force table to investigate force vectors and the component nature of forces. 2) The experiment involves setting up three strings with attached masses on a force table and adjusting until equilibrium is reached, recording the mass and angle of each force vector. 3) The results of three trials are shown, with the sums of the force vectors calculated to be zero, demonstrating equilibrium, though some experimental error was present.

Tittle: Vectors on the Pasco force table

Aim: To investigate force vectors and the component nature

of forces.

Theory: - Equilibrium an object the force has to be zero so

sum of the force vector should be zero.
-To make the vector components equal and opposite,
the sum of the force vector should be zero and the two
perpendicular direction components must also be merged into
zero.

Safety: Long hair must be tie, wear safety goggles, wear lid
cover shoes.

Equipment: Pasco force table (25cm diameter table with

divisible legs), strings, clamps, mass holder, slotted masses,
graph paper, ruler, protractor

Procedure:
Step1: Construct the Pasco force table as shown in the
diagram. (Attach three pulleys from the middle to the clamps,
three strings to the ring, put the mass hanger to each string.)
Step 2: Add 0.025kg on the mass holder (not adjustable), add
another two slotted mass to other mass holder until the force
are equilibrium. Adjusts the ring to not contact with the
middle pin.
Step 3: Record the masses(kg) and directions(degree) for the
forces.

Set 1 Mass(kg) Force(Newto Angle

n) F=mg (degree
)
Results:
Vector 0.025+0.0
1 05 0.294 0
Vector 0.025+0.0
2 05 0.294 115
Vector 0.030+0.0
3 05 0.343 231
Set 2 Mass(kg) Force(Newto Angle

1 5 0.343 0
Vector 0.05+0.00
2 5 0.539 140
Vector 0.030+0.0
3 05 0.343 290

Set 3 Mass(kg) Force(Newto Angle

n) F=mg (degree
)
Vector 0.07+0.00
1 5 0.735 0
Vector 0.08+0.00
2 5 0.833 90
Vector
3 0.1+0.005 1.029 230

Analysis:
Discussion:
Based on my analysis, the sum of all the force vector =0.
Besides, there are experimental errors so the vectors are not
equilibrium exactly. The two forces on the opposite direction
balanced the force on string at 0 . Therefore, EF=0 give from
these three forces cancelled each other out. EF=0 also known v
as equilibrium of forces.
Some experimental errors could cause the vector diagram not
completely balanced. Cotton tread and pulley could produce
friction. Additionally, sometimes the Pasco force table’s
scales are not clear which could cause not accurate results due
to estimating the scales. Human errors could cause the scale
diagrams not drawn accurately.
The improvement of errors, for the friction error, we could
restore new cotton thread width and use smoother pulley. For
the unclear scales, we could restore a completely new Pasco
force table. Then for the scale diagram, we could download a
reliable software and draw it.
Conclusion: Investigate force vectors and the component
nature of forces. The aim of this experiment, to learn the force
vector is achieved. The theoretical values and the actual values
of the experiments are not the same. This is because there’s
some errors while carrying out 3 set of the experiments as
stated in the discussion above. (X/total mass of vectors) x
100% = %error
v
EF=0 (sum of force vectors =0)
