17. Painting

17.1 General
Steel structures, auxiliary units, base frames, engines, etc. are factory painted according to
the Wärtsilä anti-corrosive treatment instructions (WDAAA203188). These instructions for
touch up and repair painting takes that standard into account.
The difference between touch-up and repair painting at site is not clear. In general, touch-
up painting is mainly used for repairing damaged paintwork. Repair painting is used when
damage is seen on a bare steel surface, e.g. welding seams.
Workmanship and the size of the damaged area are the criteria for determining the
difference between touch-up and repair painting. Responsible persons determine which is
needed. In difficult cases, the project management or the quality department shall be
contacted, to clarify whether it is a matter of touch-up or repair painting.
Surface treatment and painting according to Wärtsilä anti-corrosive treatment instructions
ensure a long life expectancy for the coating of the equipment. A damaged coating shall be
repaired carefully in order to keep the high level of expected life.

17.2 Cleaning and surface treatment

Touch-up and repair painting of pipelines and steel structures shall be of a high quality. No
pores, irregularities, or floating shall appear in the surface layer of the paint coating. To
achieve this, the object to be painted shall be cleaned properly.

17.2.1 Preparations for touch-up painting

Before touch-up painting, the surface shall be cleaned by degreasing, light grinding, or
both. Degreasing can be carried out with a suitable thinner not dissolving the painted
surface. This can be tested on a similarly painted test piece. The grinding is carried out by
ruffling the surface to improve coating adhesion. Used grit number shall be as high as
possible, preferably 120 ± 40 depending on the visibility of the treated surface. After
grinding, the surface shall be cleaned from dust and debris with a solvent-moist, lint-free
cloth.

17.2.2 Preparations for repair painting

Before repair painting, the surface shall be cleaned by grinding. Before grinding, the
following shall be done:
● Concrete and mill scale shall be removed.
● Weld slag and spatter shall be removed.
● Weld joints for transport supports shall be ground off.
● Loose paint shall be removed.
● Grease and oil shall be cleaned off.
Surface treatment shall be done with power tools, and the surface shall be cleaned to grade
St 2 (ISO 8501-1). The cleaned area shall reach areas with a sound paintwork. Transition
between the existing ground paint and the new paint shall be smooth. After grinding, the
surface shall be cleaned from dust and debris with a solvent-moist, lint-free cloth, or with a
vacuum cleaner.

17.3 Painting
The Wärtsilä painting standard is based on indoor and outdoor applications, taking the
various atmospheric corrosion categories into account. In practise, this means that the total
paint thickness for steel structures is different for indoor and outdoor applications. Both
touch-up painting and repair painting shall reach the original thickness on average,
depending on whether they are located inside or outside.

17.3.1 Touch-up painting

In touch-up painting, a topcoat with the same shade and the same type as the original
topcoat shall be used, e.g. RAL 5019 (Capri blue).

17.3.2 Repair painting

In repair painting, both a primer and a topcoat shall be applied. It is preferable that the
primer used at site contains corrosion protecting inhibitors. When a risk of corrosion is
considered to be high, the first primer shall be rich in zinc, covered by the normal primer
and the topcoat.

17.3.3 Examples of painting systems

The following table shows exposure conditions for indoor and outdoor applications.

The following table shows painting systems for piping that generally needs touch-up or
repair painting. Painting systems for all other components are presented in the Wärtsilä
anti-corrosive treatment instructions (WDAAA203188).

mohair roll instead of a brush if the treated surface is on a very visible location.
