1 General
1.1 This specification covers the surface preparation, materials and coating application
requirements for coating the fabricated steel, equipment and appurtenances of Empty
Container Handling Machine (hereinafter called ECH), Model FDC25 K&J, for reference
purpose only.
1.2 The coating system is complied with the International standard ISO 12944 Protective Paint
System, corrosively category C4 – for coastal or industrial environment. This coatings system
expected service durability class high.
1.3 The color of finish coating is to be in accordance with the owner’s requirement, while that of
primer and intermediate coating shall be up to manufacturer’s availability.

2 Standards references
Painting and corrosion protection shall be in accordance with the following codes and standards:
 ISO 8501-1:1988 - Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related
products.
 ISO 8502-3 - Assessment of dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting (Pressure sensitive
tape method)
 ISO 8503-2:1995 - Method for grading surface profile of abrasive blast cleaned steel
 ISO 8503-1 - Determine the roughness on blast cleaned steel surfaces
 ISO 8504 - Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products
 ISO 2808 - Measurements of DFT of paint film
 SSPC SP1 - Solvent cleaning

3 The pre-treatment and shop primer


3.1 Prior to abrasive blast cleaning of the steel, remove oil and grease and other contamination
with a suitable detergent of solvent according to SSPC SP1 “Solvent cleaning”.
3.2 Abrasive blasting to Sa 2 ½ according to ISO 8501-1, the abrasive must be capable of
developing a surface profile to Ry5 50-85microns or ISO 8503-1 Medium Grade.
3.3 The shop primer, should be applied immediately after blasting on the automatic line. The dry
film shall be 25 microns.

4 The secondary surface preparation and paint application


4.1 Steel structure exterior, exposed to atmosphere
Remove oil and grease, dirt, etc. with suitable detergent or solvent according to SSPC SP1,
solvent cleaning.
All welding seams must have a surface finish that ensures that the quality of the paint system will
be maintained in all respects. Holes in welding seam, undercuts, cracks, etc., should be avoided.
If found, they must be remedied by welding and/or grinding.
All weld spatters must be removed, all sharp edges must be removed or rounded off in such a
way that the specified film thickness can be build up on all surfaces. The radius of the rounding
should be approximately 1mm. any lamination must be removed.
Steel work, including welding flame-cutting, grinding must be best finished before the surface
preparation starts.
All external surface, including:
 The exterior surface of all structural members,
 The whole of surface any object such as an Mast and Chassis
 The outside surface of any guard, cabin or housing and welds, damaged and rust areas shall
be blasting cleaned to Sa 2 ½ according to ISO 8501-1: 1988.
Dust, blast abrasives etc. shall be removed from the surface after blast cleaning such that the
particle quantity and particle size do not exceed rating 3 of ISO 8502-3.
4.2 Steel structure not direct exposed to atmosphere
All the weld spatter, flux, dirt, oil and grease etc, should be removed, damaged or rusted areas to
be power tool cleaned to St 3 according to ISO 8501-1:1988.
4.3 Sealed surfaces
Sealed surface means interior surface of member sealed by welding and pressure tested in
accordance with owner’s requirement, sealed surface do not need to be painted.
4.4 Galvanized surface and other special surface
All surfaces to be coated shall be clean (In order to obtain a roughened surface, power disc
cleaning or sand papering is required) for all contaminants that would affect the integrity of the
coating system prior to surface preparation, the surfaces shall be cleaned, as necessary, to
remove all oil, grease by using suitable detergent according to SSPC SP1. Stairway treads shall
be galvanized. All galvanized surfaces need to be painted.
Stainless surfaces do not need to be painted.
Parts which are made by aluminum plate, do not need to be paint.
4.5 Repair touch-up
Remove surface contamination by scrubbing approved degreasing agent.
Wash off the scrubbed surface with fresh water and allow to dry.
Prepare the damaged area to St3 according to ISO 8501-1, by mechanical power tool cleaning.
Such abrading shall include feather of all sharp edges of sound coating around the damaged
area.
Remove all surface debris by cleaning.

5 Paint application
5.1 Weather condition
 Paint should never be applied on wet surface. Not only should painting be avoided in rain,
sleet, fog, snow, and wind, but attention must also be paid to the presence of condensation
on the surface.
 Generally, painting should be done at over 10 of atmospheric temperature and below 40 .
 No painting should be applied on the surface where the surface temperature is below 3 at
dew point temperature.
 Painting should be done when R.H. below 85%. If surface is wet or sweaty, painting should
not be done.
5.2 Painting
 The painting of he first coat should be carried out on the same day of the derusting of shop
pried steel surface preparation and after surface preparation described above is carried out.
 The interval of painting work, drying, coverage, and film thickness should be referred to paint
supplier’s Technical Data Sheet.
 Both airless spray, air spray, rollers, and brushes shall be applied according to the working
specification.
 A stripe coat should be carried out by brush on locations where the spray application will be
not properly applied prior to full coating.
 Surfaces of the shop primer damaged by welding, burning, or rubbing and rusted surfaces
shall be cleaned by blasting or power tools prior to painting but shall not be touched up with
shop primer.

6 Painting system (Sigma, Hempel or IP)


General Requirements:

1) Use only paint without Lead/Chrome

2) Gloss grade, must values of 90+5/0.

3) Supplier need give us the details procedure for painting

7. Measurement of Dry film thickness


Drying film thickness shall be measured at each coating with measuring instrument Elcometer DFT
gauge according to ISO 2808.
All DFT reading shall not less than specified DFT requirements in paint system.

8. Warranty
For main steel structures, paint warranty to be 5 years, RE2 of European grade corresponding to Ri 2
of ISO 4628
Note: For other OEM components, Normally, Paint warranty to be 5 years, RE3 of European grade
corresponding to Ri 3 of ISO 4628
